The Final Feast
Chapter 20
The next few weeks for One meant raiding beaver dams. She ignored the wood; it was too heavy and not her main concern. She grabbed cementing paste if she could afford it, but her main goal was much scarcer to come by. She dug through the piles of wood to uncover a pile of rare flowers. Snatching them quickly, she ran past the angry residents of the dam and jumped on Corvi's back. She repeated this process every time she found a dam. When she wasn't raiding, she was researching. She watched the Máng Nù very carefully. When they were hunting, she watched their patterns and how they reacted to certain things.
When they were full, she followed them back to the cave and kept her distance, watching and listening from afar. They had two calls: Danger and Food. Apart from that, they were serene as long as they had food in their stomachs. When she ventured into the cave, she took Red the otter with her. They would sit in silence, the little otter squirming with nervous energy. They would listen to the calls and then when they were outside the cave, One would make Red imitate the calls. After a week or so of practice, Red could mimic them perfectly. With the raids and research complete, there was just one thing left to do.
The Final Feast
Chapter 19
The cloud swooped down into a thick forest that One didn't remember ever seeing before. It was difficult to navigate through the thick stems and vines. The enire forest was alive with hungry plants, snapping at them as they passed, hoping to snag a quick meal. Deeper in the forest, the trees and carnivorous plants cleared out, making way for the entrance of a cave. The bats disappeared into the cave's yawning mouth. One landed Corvi outside the entrance and peered inside. The onycs were heading deeper down and One didn't want to go into a dark cavern full of bloodthirsty creatures. A few of the onycs banged into the walls as they tried to follow the rest. One of the onycs hit a stalacite and crashed to the ground. The rest of the bats had gone, and the stunned onyc staggered back into an upright position. Without hesitation, One took the opportunity and skewered the onyc with her pike.
It shrieked and scrambled, and for a second, One feared its colony would come to its aid, but the cave remained silent but for the cries of the impaled onyc. It struggled for a second longer, but then fell still. One held the pike up, lifting its limp body off the ground. An idea crossed her mind and she began to formulate a plan. She carried the dead Máng Nù back to Corvi, who froze at the sight of it. "Let's go," One said, climbing onto the argent's back and strapping the bat corpse to the saddle. "We've got work to do."
The Final Feast
Chapter 26
They landed at the front of the cave. As much as she hated it, One had to make sure they were all really dead. She walked slowly to the back of the cave, stepping over the bloody remains of the Máng Nù colony. It had worked. They really were gone. She turned, about to walk out when a soft squeak broke the silence. She turned her head. There, lying on a pile of corpses, was one of the bats, heavily injured and barely breathing. She stepped closer and knelt down to look at it. It was very small compared to the others, likely a baby. It was helpless. One pulled out a tranquilizer dart and stabbed it as gently as possible. It squeaked once and fell asleep.
She fed it some meat and sat down on one of the piles of bats. After a while it woke up and sniffed her, squeaking for more. She fed it again and picked it up, cradling it in her arms. The onyc fell asleep again and One walked out of the cave. She whistled, letting her tames know to stay passive. "He's one of us now," she said, climbing on Corvi's back. They returned to the beach, both defeated and victorious. One checked on each of her wounded tames and then walked back to her hut. The baby onyc was asleep on her bed, squeaking softly as he breathed. She wrapped his wounds and then took one of his little arms, marking "Vincent" into his implant.
The Final Feast
Chapter 23
She took a deep breath and reached for her bag. Inside were five glass jars filled with a mixture of water and crushed rare flowers. Máng Nù recognized creatures by scent. One knew once the chaos started they wouldn't be able to hear a thing, and the scent of the flower mixture was so strong not even the adept nose of a Máng Nù could smell anything through it. She readied them in her arms and gave a soft whistle to let Red know it was time. The otter poked her head out a little and nervously let out the Danger call. Shreiks filled the cave, echoing the warning to the back. One took one of the jars and chucked it at the ceiling. It crashed into one of the bats and a cluster of them scattered in a panicked frenzy. She threw the remaining four at different parts of the ceiling. The cave was filled eith a horde of onycs flying aimlessly about. So far so good, but now came the dangerous part. They were afraid, but she had to make them scared enough to start biting in self defense. She pulled a pike from her back and readied herself to run.
She threw the pike, stabbing one of the bats through the wing and hiting another in the back. Immediatly, the second bat scrambled to its feet and dove into the nearest bat, biting it in the neck. They struggled throwing each other into another onyc and them biting them. The aggression spread through the swarm, each Máng Nù sinking its fangs into another, and One and Red were directly in the middle of it. One whistled and Corvi sped down the corridor, snatching One and Red up in one swift motion. Several of the onycs followed directly behind them, snapping at Corvi and each other. Corvi's added speed kept them just out of the reach of the snapping jaws of the bats. The argent led them directly into the waiting jaws of the creatures at the cave's entrance.
The Final Feast
Chapter 18
One whistled. Immediately, Corvi turned and made a mad dash towards the rex. One pushed Venus forward at full speed. This was a race for their lives now. She looked around. There was a diplo in the distance. They could make it. The distance between Corvi and Venus grew smaller quickly. The rex slowed down, exauhsted from just a short moment of running. One urged her to go faster. They couldn't afford to slow down. Venus didn't know what was at stake here. She had never encountered these onycs before. One looked back. Corvi was right behind her. The argent dove suddenly, snatching One from Venus' back and lifting her into the air. Confused and shocked, One looked back. She couldn't see the onycs, but she could still hear them. She looked down to see Venus snapping at the bats as they shredded her to pieces.
"No!" One screamed. She whistled for Corvi to land, but the bird kept flying. "Let me go!" One kicked and fought to break free of Corvi's grasp, but the argent's grip was too strong. One looked back again. Venus was on the ground, chunks of her face and sides missing. She gave one last roar and her head dropped. The onycs dug in immediatly and One watched as Venus was eaten away in seconds. She was furious at Corvi, but mostly at herself. She should have known Venus' lack of stamina would make her an easy target. She looked up. The cloud of bats lifted into the air and started flying off again towards the volcano, and, presumably, home. One pulled herself onto Corvi's back and pulled her reigns back. The bird squawked in protest, but One was too angry with her to care what she wanted. She turned Corvi towards the bats and followed them. She would figure out where they lived, and then she would find a way to kill them.
The Final Feast
Chapter 17
One scribbled in her explorer notes on the back of the Máng Nù entry. She had encountered the onycs twice, and both times her theory had proven true. The first time they went after Sandman, the giant snake. Although a few of them had followed Corvi they turned their attention to the sarco when they encountered it. Now that she thought of it, the onycs that had followed Corvi didn't seem to know Sandman was there. The second time they ignored her and her wolves all together and went after Jet the allo. They'd all noticed him, but when the noticed the bronto corpse, they went after it instead. There was only one reasonable explanation: Máng Nù go after the biggest meal they can find. It was still just a theory until she could prove it. She left the hut and climbed up to the aviary. Corvi was gone.
Venus crashed through the redwoods, One on her back. The rex crushed everything in her path, keeping an eye out for the bird. One looked down. Parasaurs dashed out of the way, avoiding Venus' crushing feet. Trikes looked up and snorted before reluctantly putting distance between themselves and the rex. One's attention was drawn upward by the unmistakable screech of her argentavis. A silhouette against the moon, Corvi dashed left and right, diving and swooping up again. She was fighting another silhouette. One squinted. She was fighting many silhouettes in the shape of bats. One stopped Venus and watched in terror as Corvi fought for her life. Flashbacks of Redwing being ripped apart by a direwolf filled her head. She refused to watch another argent die.
The Final Feast
Chapter 15
One cracked her eyes open. Her ears were ringing and her nose was bleeding. Knidos picked her up. She looked around to see what had hit her. There was a large tail looming over her head, swinging back and forth wildly. Her view was obstructed by trees, so she climbed on a rock to get a better look. It was a bronto, fighting for its life against something One couldn't see. There was roar. One recognized it immediatly. The bronto fell and an allo jumped on its back, revealing itself. It was jet black, the shade of the trees making it nearly invisible under their canopy. It roared in victory and then looked down directly at One. She turned and ran, whistling for her wolves to do the same. The stomping behind her grew louder. She could feel the allo's hot breath on her neck as it snapped at her. It was right above her when it stopped suddenly. The sky grew dark and lud shrieking filled the air.
The Máng Nù hovered in front of the sun for a moment, then dove towards the group of creatures. One led her wolves under the cover of the trees and watched from a distance as the allo stood its ground. It roared at the onycs, refusing to move. They were on it in a second, tearing at its face. It didn't take the allo long to realize it was outmatched and ran back the way it came, the onycs right on it. The allo would have been doomed in a second if it hadn't run past the dead bronto. Immediatly the cloud targeted the large corpse, letting the allo escape. It stood back, watching the bats devour his hard work. They were done in mere moments, and after cleaning the bones from the ground, the ascended back into the sky and disappeared, flying back to whatever horrendous hole they had come from. One turned back around to see the allo charging at her. He was going to eat something, and if it wasn't a bronto, it would be her.
The Final Feast
Chapter 12
One spent the rest of the night checking on Corvi and researching as mich as she could about the onycs. A few keywords in the entry had been translated. "Danger" was the most used, but there were also words like, "Eater" and "Barbaric." From what One could gather, their only thought was "Kill and Eat." A loud shriek broke the silence. One leapt to her feet and poked her head outside. Corvi was awake, screeching down from the aviary at something on the ground. One held the torch in her hand out to see what it was, but all she caught was a dark scaly squiggle slithering away into the moonlit forest. A titanoboa? Here? The Footpaw wasn't too far from the swamp, but far enough that the creatures residing there wouldn't venture as far as the beach. The realization hit her quickly. That was the same boa from earlier, the one that attacked them. One whistled to the twins and White Fang and set them as guards to keep watch. If the snake came back, she needed to know. Running back to the hut, One flipped open the explorer notes again and flipped to the back. There was another entry with a simple drawing of a large snake and no author. At the top was the name, "Sandman," and under the drawing there were only a few lines reading:
"Never look into its eye. Never let it hypnotize. Never encounter it in the night. Never give it the chance to bite."
The Final Feast
Chapter 11
Corvi dropped the human on the beach and collapsed next to her. They both lay there, trying to catch their breath. As the adrenaline wore off, a burning in the human's arms and legs became more and more prevalent. She looked at her left arm. The device in her wrist and the word "ONE" printed under it were still there, but large bite marks covered the rest of her arm. In some places the bats had managed to reach bone. It was the same for her other arm and legs. One looked at Corvi, who had fared far worse. Her wings and neck were bleeding badly, and she was unconscious. One took a deep breath and pushed herself up to her feet, only to collapse immediately. Groaning in pain, she strainer her head up. She wasn't too far from the wolf pen. She whistled and two canine heads poked out; Kepoi and one of her sons, Knidos. Kepoi barked and the snow-white twins Naxos and Sicyon came running out. Knidos pulled One onto his back while the tsins and Kepoi attempted to drag Corvi to the aviary.
One slid off of Knidos's back and crawled into her hut to find materials to treat her wounds and Corvi's. After bandaging her limbs and then Corvi's neck and wings, she went back to her hut and dug through her storage. Those onycs ... she had seen them before somewhere. Finding her explorer notes, she flipped through the dossiers and looked at the onyc page. The onycs they had encountered looked different; for one thing, they didn't have eyes. She kept flipping through the rest of the book and almost missed it. It wasn't a dossier; it was a Mei-Ying entry. The writting was in a language she couldn't read, but the pictures were enough. Giant, eyeless bats, devouring a desert of bones. At the top of the page was the name and under it the translation: "Máng Nù - Blind Fury."
The Final Feast
Chapter 10
Corvi sped after the snake, determined to reach the human before the boa could when, in a flurry of screeches, a flood of large winged creatures darkened the sky. "There here ... sssoner than I thought," hissed the boa fearfully. The creatures dove and swarmed the three of them. Corvi screeched and kicked the creatures off of her. Through the horde of wings she could see the titanoboa and her human doing the same. She pushed through a line of them and dashed towards the human, clutching the survivor in her talons and pushing herself into the air as quickly as she could. Most of the creatures remained on the ground, attacking the giant boa, but a few took to the sky with Corvi, hunting her down. Out of the crowd, she could make thsm out more clearly. They were pale, eyeless onycs, hissing and frothing at the mouth ... but what they were doing outside, she couldn't tell.
Corvi dove down to gain momentum, the bats doing the same behind her. She darted through the swamp trees, avoiding the jaws of a sarco as she went. As it snapped up behind her, it caught a mouthfull of the onycs. The small horde scattered, panicked by the sudden uproar. She turned her head back, expecting them to scatter and fly off, but watched in horror as they regrouped and devoured the sarco in a matter off seconds. It was just long enough for Corvi to put enough distance between them escape.
The Final Feast
Chapter 9
"Hello, little one," the boa hissed with a grin. "Though you aren't very little anymore, are you?" Corvi said nothing. She was seething with anger and wanted nothing more than to attack, but she also had her human to think of. Corvi shipped her head around. Her human! The survivor was on the ground, groaning. She must have been thrown from Corvi's back during her dive. She carefully grabbed the collar of the human's armour and pulled her to her feet. At the sight of the boa, she grabbed her sword, but when it lifted up to its full height her face paled.
"You were just a little hatchling then," the boa hissed, circling around the human and Corvi. The argent stamped her foot. "You killed my brothers. You killed my father." The boa grinned, "How else could I make you the bird I knew you could be. Ruthlesss. Mercilesss. Courageousss. You'll need all of them for the fight to come. Without me you'd be soft and uselesss." Corvi launched herself at the boa, who quicly dropped to the ground, causing Corvi to hit a tree. Corvi stumbled back into the boa, who coiled around her, constricting hed movement. "Now, now," hissed the serpent, "Don't go losssing your head. There's a reason for thisss." Its calm tone became furious as it suddenly released its grip on Corvi, who quickly took the opportunity to break free. The boa turned around and looked down at the sword lodged in its side. It looked up at the survivor holding it. "Imbecile!" it hissed, launching itself at the human.
The Final Feast
Chapter 7
Corvi landed amongst the tall trees. Just in front of her were two allos, asleep and apparently well fed. The human quietly slid off her back and slowly walked forward, her sword at the ready. She was walking towards something lying on the ground. Corvi squinted her eyes a little and found it was a saddle, presumably belonging to the procoptodon. No wonder the allos were full. Corvi waited impatiently and something caught her attention. There was a flicker in a tree in the distance. They were close to the swamp; anything could jump out at them.
She kept her eyes on the tree, alert, but saw nothing else and returned her attention to the human. The survivor had grabbed the saddle and was slowly backing away from the allos. There was another flicker of movement, this time much closer. A sense of urgency pushed Corvi to investigate. She stepped towards the tree where she had seen the movement cautiously, making sure not to wake the allos. She peered up into the branches, and a gleam caught her eye, but the shade of the leaves hid whatever was making it. She was startled by the human jumping onto her back, causing her to squawk. One of the allos stirred a little but resettled after truning onto its other side. Both the human and Corvi gave a sigh of relief before lifting into the air.
The Final Feast
Chapter 6
Years later...
Corvi cracked open an eye as Tango squaked, "She's back! She's back!" Sure enough, the human had returned, but though she had initally left with a procoptodon, she was now walking back to the base and was heavily injured. The tiny otter that had been riding on the human's shoulders scurried down onto the ground and crawled up to the aviary, curling around Tango's neck and shivering. The old pteranodon was a patient one and often overtrusting. Corvi scoffed and closed her eyes, attempting to fall back asleep until she felt a pat on her wing. The human climbed onto her back. Corvi sighed. She wouldn't be getting any rest now. She pushed herself into the sky and the human directed her to the Redwoods.

Chapter 5
The titanoboa tightened its grip on Silvermane's neck suddenly, there was a loud snap, and the argent went limp. The boa left its victim and slithered back up the tree. It turned its head and looked at Corvi with its remaining eye. "Learn thisss lesson little one." It hissed and leaned closer. "I may lose the battle, but I win the war. Alwaysss." In one bite, it snatched up Corvi's remaining two siblings and slithered back down the tree. It curled around Silvermane's corpse and as it dragged its catch away, hissed back to Corvi, "We will meet again, little one." Corvi curled up in the corner of the nest, alone. She burned the snake's face into her mind. "We will meet again," she whispered. "And you'll wish we hadn't."
The Final Feast
Chapter 4
With his hatchlings fed, Silvermane pushed himself back up into the air and began to fly off. Corvi hopped to the edge of the nest and watched him go, but something seemed wrong. He was struggling to stay in the air. Without warning, he dropped to the ground and stopped moving. For a moment the forest was still until the silence was disturbed by a growing hiss. Out of the shadows, a long figure slitbered up to the fallen bird. Corvi felt her heart stop as the snake coiled itself around Silvermane's neck and proceeded to suffocate him. The boa turned her head up to the nest, and looked Corvi directly in the eye.
The Final Feast
Chapter 13
Sandman curled between the branches of a large swamp tree. The bats had taken a large chunk out of the boa's side, and it had struggled to make it back. It made sure to check on Corvi. She was the daughter of the fastest argentavis to ever live, and might by the Island's only chance at stopping the rise of the blind ones. Sandman hissed in pain as its wound scrapped against the bark of the tree. Somehow, it had managed to bite all of the bats at least once, sending them almost immediatly so the boa could make its escape. Sandman shut its eyes and tried to sleep.
(The next paragraph is told from the perspective of the Máng Nù. Might be a little confusing since they don't really think.)
The silence of the cave was interrupted by a loud snort. A hiss passed between the perked ears at the cave's ceiling: Food. The hisses became shieks and the quiet was replaced with the screeching associated with the arrival of an unfortunate guest. Ears became useless in all of the noise. It was all up to smell now. The scent belonged to phiomia, not a filling meal, but enough to make a snack at least. There was the distinct squeal of the phiomia, almost immediatley drowned out by the sound of flesh being ripped and bone being crushed. The feeding was over the second the last bone had disappeared. The shrieking ended and the colony returned to the ceiling. They held still, listening, waiting for another victim to befall their fangs. If the wait grew too long, they would have to find a victim themselves.
The Final Feast
Chapter 14
One walked through the redwoods trees, keeping her eyes up. The last time she was here, she had been pounced on by a thyla, and she didn't want to relive that experience. She looked back at the pack of wolves following her. They were all strong. If anything went wrong, she had a good chance of making it back with all of them. This wouldn't be like last time. They crossed the river that led over to the volcano and started their ascent, keeping to the right side. Kepoi barked and One looked down. There was the cave she was looking for. They climbed down towards the cave. One chipped away at a rock, gathering supplies for a campfire. There was a soft coo from behind her and she turned around, coming face to face with a troodon. She looked up. There were several of them, prancing around like they owned the woods.
Very slowly, One reached for her sword, but was immediatley bitten. She hacked at the troodon, who called to its friends. They surrounded her, snapping at her from all sides. One tried to swing her sword again, but found she couldnt mover her arm. Her legs gave out and she was on the ground, unable to move. The troodons continued to bite. One panicked. She couldn't defend herself. The troodons' barks were interrupted by a howl. The pack alpha, Loki, charged down the mountain's side, the pack right behind him. One couldn't turn her head to see the fight, but after a while, no more noise came from the troodons. It wasn't too long before she could mobe her arms again, then her legs. Dead troodons littered the outside of the cave. One patted Loki's head and walked towards the cave before something hit her in the back, sending her flying into a rock.
