Sickles and Scythes

Chapter 4: The Wound Always Bleeds

It was a warm morning. It’s not usually warm, but rarely the jerboas will screech and scrape and hide or roll about, and when that happens you know that it’s either gonna freeze your ass off or be a nice toasty sunrise. Guess this morning I lucked out. Thankfully simp gang- gosh… Tyrone called them that… anyway, simp gang had moved behind some rocks so I didn’t have to put up with all their ‘Oh my god, you look so prettyyyy’ and ‘Awwwww, he’s such a cutieee!!’ Comments. I was near some of the families, they were all curled up and happy together with the baby deinonychus in the middle of the huddle. That’s when I noticed I wasn’t the only one awake. A small, probably juvenile deinonychus was tumbling about and rolling over about a metre or two away from me. She noticed that I was awake and stumbled clumsily over to me, and shook her head before sitting down. She gasped and said:

“You’re Serena! You are the pack leader! You're awesome!” I chuckled and responded:

“Yes, that’s me. Thank you for the compliment.”

“What’s a comli… comp… compylant?”

“It’s where you say something nice to someone,” I answered “Like if I say you are adorable, that’s a compliment.” She gasped and ruffled her cyan-tinted feathers, exclaiming:

“That’s so cool!” But then she looked a little confused. “My mummy says that this is where all the families and the children are staying… where are your children?” It was an innocent question but it still stung. “I don’t have any children.” I responded.

“Oh… then where is your mate sleeping?” I winced.

“I lost my mate a long time ago…” so she replied with, “Then why are you here?”

“Because it’s nice to see everyone else so happy.” At that thought she scurried back to her parents who had just woken up and made her way to the centre of the huddle. It was a wholesome sight, but my chest throbbed and hurt where there felt like a hole that had been carved out and of me bled.

As dawn hit, I walked towards simp gang in an attempt to round up some people for a hunt. As I walked through I heard the infamous Lilly pipe in a comment, something like: ‘Oh she’s here.’ In an aggressive way. I turned and faced her.

“Care to share? Better to be strong and say to my face than be weak and cower away. Oh, and the weak always perish, Lilly. Never forget that.” Before she could respond there was a yell from behind me. One of the males had stood up.

“Look, just because you’re bitter about your ‘besty pal’ doesn’t mean you can talk to Lilly like that.” I walked over to him and placed a claw on his chest.

“Sweetheart, you don’t wanna start something you can’t finish.”

“Oh really.”

“Look honey, back down now or this’ll end in blood.”

“For you maybe.” I growled. He growled back, and we stood apart. He leapt towards me, attempting to grab ahold of my back but I ducked and caught his tail, which I spun him round in midair and flung him into a rock. I pounced, putting my sickle-claw at his throat and leaving a long scar across his abdomen with my right arm, slowly and painfully. He screamed as I finished scarring him.

“Look cutie, you ever pull a stunt like that and I won’t be as gracious,” I turned and walked away. “And remember, the weak ALWAYS perish.”

“Says something about your boyfriend.” I froze. I turned and ran straight towards him, grabbing his throat and gnashing him about. He was on the brink of death so I left him there, blood pouring out of all the wounds on his body. Not even Lilly wanted to help him and they walked away.

On my way back I saw an Argentavis flying away from where I slept with something in its talons. Then I saw the families chasing it. I looked closer and a bundle of cyan-tinted feathers flailed about in its talons. I ran, and I jumped off a rock and dig my claws into the birds side, ripping and shredding at it until if finally died. The little deinonychus that I saved and had talked to earlier hugged me and started crying. I patted her head and gave her to her grateful family. Then I said,

“I am never letting anyone be taken ever again.”

So that’s exactly what I’ll do.
