Sickles and Scythes

Chapter 1: Allies And Enemies

It was a cold morning. Or at least, I was cold. I guess that’s why they tell you not to sleep by a river. Despite the lining of feathers that coated my body, the cold had crept in and I was coated in a layer of dew. It was either dew or overspill from the river, either way my feathers were damp and cold because of it. And I was hungry. Great. What a perfect morning. I spotted an Allo pack slowly meandering through some foliage a while away. They’d make a nice breakfast. Now, you’re probably wondering- what on earth hunts the mighty Allosaurus, an apex predator of its ecosystem, and has feathers that line its body? Me. Or, my pack. I may not be the alpha, but when I take my place next to Serena you don’t question me or my deadliness. I decided to head towards the others. Although I’m an anti-socialist I still like the company of the others. Most of them, anyway. As I made my way through to the sleeping pack of Deinonychus that I called my friends and family, I noticed Serena- she was the only other one awake. She was lying down but her head was upright and looking around. When she saw me, she stood up and waited for me to plod along over to her. Although she was one of the more “attractive” Deinonychus, what with her dark navy and royal purple feathers and teasing behaviour, she didn’t actually have a mate, or anyone she fancied or something like that.

“Ugh, they expect you to worship them and snuggle and kiss them. It’s disgusting, the lot of them.”- that was her usual answer whenever someone brought up the topic.

“Sleep by the river?” She said in her teasing voice, raising her eyebrows at me.

“Hey, it’s better than having to be within eyesight of Lilly.” I retorted back.

“Heya handsome! I heard you talking about me! Aw, what were you-“ I cut her off, saying:

“Lilly if you EVER call me that again I will split your head open and turn your insides into your outsides,” Serena chuckled as she watched the scene. “See what I mean?” I asked Serena as Lilly walked off to be with her friends. She laughed again, and said:

“Yeah, I see what you mean. Anyway, I’m hungry. I’ve seen a few Paracers here and there but they’re quite far away. Have you seen anything?”

“How about an Allo pack? Other side of the river, in between a few rocks last time I saw them.”

“An Allo pack?” Her face lit up. “Oh, and between rocks… have you seen where the other hunters are?”

“Probably by the simp gang worshiping Lilly and that lot.”

“How about you go over there and round them up while I go and scou-“ I cut her off in cries of protest.

“Serena please- you can’t do that to me.”

“Go on you,” she said, blinking her eyes and swishing her tail as she walked off towards the Allos. That was her teasing me- the other guys would have done something stupid by now to try and impress her. Great. Thanks a lot Serena.

I slowly walked through Lilly’s group to where the other strong hunting Deinonychus were. One of the “simp gang” as I called them tried to walk beside me, brushing against me and trying to get my attention but I grabbed her by the neck and threw her out of my sight. The others who were about to try and get my attention as well decided against it. Lilly snuck in a comment as I walked past, saying:

“Aw, at least I know he didn’t mean it.” That comment got her a sharp slash at her throat. She whimpered and scurried away. I rounded up the other hunters and we made our way to Serena.
