The Riddles of the phoenixes series

The Lost world.

Prologue: Desperate measures

“It’s a baby girl!” A doctor cried. A high pitched cry wailed through the white room. A nurse/ maid ran in. She was a pretty woman, with dark brown hair up in elegant bun, with a cyan blouse , dark blue jeans, black boots and brown eyes. She came and looked at the baby in the doctor’s arms. It was a sickly looking thing with big light green eyes, wrapped up in a white little dress, that hardly fit her, and a soft cotton pink blanket.

The maid frowned. The doctor smiled. “The lucky mother is asleep in the other room.” She said, grinning at the maid. The maid hid her hands behind her back, they were shaking hard. “As her most trusted maid, I will take the child until she wakes up.” The maid said. The doctor nodded and handed the small bundle to the maid. “Is the child healthy?” The maid asked.

The doctor nodded again. “Yes. She is rather small and pale, but I see nothing wrong with her. Good day.” She walked off and the maid looked down at the small baby. It looked up at her with giant eyes. She took a deep breath. She had to do this. Carefully she trotted out of the room into the empty hall, and out the back door of the hospital. She ran, the baby clutched to her chest, through a back alley. She stopped by a dumpster, conveniently filled with clean old blankets.

She lay the baby down in there and then ran covered it with another blanket. The maid then, pulled out a pink blanket that looked exactly the same as the one wrapped around the baby, and wrapped it around a bunch of hard blankets and a hot water bottle. She held the blanket like one would cradle a baby and ran back inside to the hospital. The nurse took a few deep breaths to steady herself and blinked her eyes a couple of times, so that some fake tears dropped from her eyes.

Just then the doctor came in. “How is the child?” The maid sniffed, inwardly hoping that she looked sad. “The child…” She made her voice crack. “Is dead…the little thing was so weak….she didn’t last long…”

The maid hurried back to the alley about a hour later. They had bought her story. They hadn’t even bothered to look at the “dead” child”. They had buried it. The parents would mourn for their child. The maid ran to the dumpster and sighed with relief. The baby was still there. She scooped it up. As soon as she did, the child’s face screwed up in a nasty expression and it began to wail. The nurse tried in vain, to silence it. “Shut it you little wretch!” She growled. It only cried harder. “Shh, shh.” The maid whispered. The baby did not quiet.

In desperation, she pulled out a silver medallion that she had stolen and held it above the baby. It stopped crying and, reaching upward for it. She gently set in the baby girl’s arms. The baby cooed with delight and sucked on the edge of it. The nurse cuddled the baby gently to her chest and began to walk. She grinned wickedly to herself. No one would know. She would use this little wretch to help her get what she wanted. And no one would suspect a thing.
