The tale of the shadow phoenixes

Chapter seven.

Although Cole and Leah hurried him, they were still late for dinner. “Where have you been?” Kate exclaimed worriedly. “And….WHAT have you been doing?” Leah and Cole were soaking wet from their expedition in the pond. Leah and Cole stepped inside the house with their mother. Their father was in the living room too. “Um, we were at the lake with our new friends.” Leah said sweetly. Their parents sighed in relief. “Thank goodness, we thought something might have happened to y’all.” Their father said. Kate brought them their plates and they ate while talking to their parents. Peter was upstairs reading. “So who are you guys’ new friends?” Nathan asked. “Arianna Black and Tom and James Riddle.” Leah said. *Plshh!*Nathan spat out his coffee at the mention of the Riddle boys. Jay glared at her husband. Nathan wiped his mouth and hurried off to grab a towel to wipe up the coffee on the floor. “Listen guys, we need you to keep a good distance away from the…Riddle family.” Kate said. “Why?” Cole asked. Nathan walked back in. “Because… the Riddle family is…different. They don’t even live here and they are a very strange family that we should stay away from.” Nathan said. “What do you mean?! The Riddle’s are nice?” Cole blurted. “Yes, but all we’re saying is you need to keep your distance.” Kate said. Leah frowned and she and Cole exchanged looks. “Now get finished eating and head to bed.”

Cole lay in bed that night. What did his parents mean? They didn’t seem strange to him. Sure they were a bit different compared to other people but nothing was wrong with them. Or was there?

Sorry this chapter was short. I was busy.
