Tips & Strategies

What are tips for tapejara? Tips and strategies for tapejara in ARK: Survival Ascended & Evolved.
A great taming mount with friends! Have one person drive and another shoot tranqs, makes tranqing flying creatures like argies and quetz a breeze, but you can also use this technique to tranq just about anything. Solo, you can hook onto walls such as cliff sides and try to fire from the saddle, although the angle tends to be difficult.
Otherwise, it makes a great "pick up" mount, use it to pick up friends that may have lost their flying mount or otherwise stranded themselves far from home.
However they are quite slow, consider putting a number of points in speed and a few in weight, especially if you want to keep up with fleeing quetz. With enough weight they can become an interesting alternative to an argy.
Get a scorpion
Ride the scorpion up to the tape when it’s landed
The tape won’t fly away and you can get bolas out on a scorpion
Hit the tape with bolas then arrows/darts
Put prime meat in
Enjoy your new Tapejara
Hard to do, but aggro with rare flower and pull into a covered pen. Close pen. Need a giant gate at least. Wood or stone works. Then bola and tranq at leisure within safety of your pen. No baddies to get him.
Use rare flowers to aggro the tapejara and lead it to a flyer taming cage.
Aim a bola above his head from a range and don't get to close or it will crush your dreams
These guys are a tricky bunch. They’re the pterosaur equivalent of butterflies: they’re pretty to look at, come in a variety of colors, and are friendly towards nearby wild dinos but DEATHLY AFRAID of us silly hoomans. Therefore, there is some amount of preparation to be taken when taming one, especially depending on where it is.
Now, you may think you can tame them without the ghillie suit, and it is possible. However, the timing on throwing the bola at that point becomes EXTREMELY STRICT. If you’re even a half-second incorrect in the timing of your throw, or if your throw is even slightly awkward, then you can just go ahead and say “Bye-bye!” to that taming opportunity in particular unless you have another flyer you can use to knock it back out of the sky, and even then you’ll find that landing your shots during the chase is especially difficult, not to mention lacking a flyer is exactly why you’d even want to flock to these guys in the first place.
Therefore, while not an absolute requirement, the ghillie suit is still preferrable when going after these guys. It may be a pain to go to the snow region initially and have to race back out of there before you die to the cold or to a wolfpack, but considering the pursuits for the Obelisks, I’d say eventually setting foot over there is something of a rite of passage anyway.
I found three of them near red obelisk on the island for anyone who can't find one
You would think they would wake up extremely fast due to their skittish nature and excellent speed but NO, a level 30 takes 45 minutes to wake up, like wtf Wildcard Studios?
I once found a helpful glitch with the Tapejara. I was solo taming a quetzal, when I discovered that if you change to a passenger seat and reload your gun, the Tapejara’s stamina automatically refills. I know it works on mobile with the Tapejara, but I don’t know if it works on other editions or on other dinos.
If it fets a way and flies too high, you better of leaving it as it wont land for quite awhile.
I cannot find your tip to thank you, but advice to just kill then revive at platform was just what i needed after stalking and bolo'ing and trying unsuccessfully to trap or KO. Granted it took 26 amber for level 210, it was totally worth it, thanks to you!
If your in ark mobile, and you have access to potent dust and dodo feathers, craft some dodo arrows and shoot the particular tapejara your looking for with the dodo arrow to activate agro on it and lure them. If your in normal ark (pc, ps4 or xbox) use rare flowers to lure it into a trap.
So to tame mine I actually didn't have a ghillie armor so I just landed my argy at like 2 meters of the tapejara, waited for it to land, then winded up my bola and ran at him lol
Then, I threw it on the tapejara and knocked it out with a tranq dart. Finally, I saw a diplo near it and killed it to get prime meat, gave it to the tapejara and boom tamed :)
Sorry if my english is bad lol
- Emerald
Can you bola it mid air (like what happens if the bola hits it flying or mid air)
Up if yes and down if no
I use these things to tame quetzals
You can also set up a trap and eat rare flowers near it to have it chase you into said trap, if you don’t want to sneak and throw bolas
They spawn near mountains
And redwoods
You should be really careful, as a frightened Tapejara will always try to escape your render-range, and will always end up very high if a Bola is not administered.
