Chapter fourteen: Storm
(Ack, sorry I mislabeled the last chapter number. 😐)
The next morning they were one the move again. This time Rowan allowed them frequent water breaks for all their sanity, without water Cedric became very crazy, and they picked berries to eat and a occasional small animal that Cedric killed. They avoided the black berries, that made them sleepy, and the white berries that made them thirsty and too energetic. Rowan insisted on them walking, walking till they arrived at the dome.
It wasn’t a normal feature, Oliver explained. The original arks’ Obelisks were all in different locations and their was only three obelisks then. Cedric looked around. Elayne was stumbling along, still complaining just not as loudly. Kannon was walking quietly in the back, his eyes dark. Oliver was studying the dinosaurs as they walked.
“Oh look a dodo!” He exclaimed. Cedric sniffed. “There have been several other dodos before that, Oliver.” Cedric said. Oliver frowned at him, pushing up his glasses. Rowan was walking ahead of them. She stopped, wiping sweat from her forehead, waiting for them to catch up. “Hurry up slowpokes.” She called coldly.
“How encouraging.” Cedric muttered softly. “My hair’s a mess!!” Elayne wailed. They all walked up to Rowan except Kannon. “Uh Kannon? You okay?” Oliver called. Kannon had stopped randomly, staring off blankly into the forest. No expressions of emotions or thoughts entered his face. Rowan frowned. “Hey!! Hurry up, useless!! You wanna get out of here or what?!” Kannon blinked at her and slowly, sadly trailed behind them.
“So how long have you and Kannon known each other?” Cedric asked Oliver. “Well, we met at the school tour.. uh about a year ago.” Oliver said, simply. “Say, do you think these implants give us abilities?” Cedric shrugged. “Maybe the people who already have medallions keep their powers and those without them get implants that give them powers. I wonder my ability is.” Oliver said.
Rowan’s head shot up, and her ears twitched. Cedric pushed his hair back carelessly. “That might explain why me and Elayne don’t have implants and y’all do. Who knows, maybe your power will be to charm ladies.” Cedric said. Oliver turned crimson and glared at Cedric. Cedric grinned widely. “ANYWAYS…so you and Elayne know y’all’s powers right?” Oliver asked, blushing furiously. Cedric nodded. Elayne shifted on her feet nervously and nodded slowly.
“We just need to figure out the rest of ours and use them to our advantage.” Oliver said. Cedric eyes the black cloth around Rowan’s right wrist. Why was it right there? Maybe she just found the sight of someone implanted in her wrist disturbing….
Suddenly Elayne let out a short high pitched scream. They all whirled to face her. “What is it?” Rowan demanded. “I-I chipped a nail!!” Elayne gasped. Rowan’s face turned dark and she sneered at Elayne. “That’s all?” She asked slowly, controlling her temper barely. Cedric hid his face, trying not to laugh. Elayne nodded solemnly. “My poor babies…they were so smooth and well groomed. I think I might faint.”
Oliver scrunched his brow up thoughtfully. Kannon sighed gloomily. Cedric gave him a curious look. “Oh come off it! You’re not going to faint, drama queen!” Rowan snapped, her eyes menacing. The sky suddenly turned dark above and the sun hid behind the clouds. “I think it’s going to rain.” Oliver said. He was right. Moments later it began pouring cats and dogs.
“We need to find shelter!” Rowan called loudly. Cedric didn’t mind the rain but soon it began to thunder and lightning flashed and hail began to fall. “Quick!! A cave!” Oliver cried. A small cave lie ahead. They ran toward it.
“I’m all wet!!!” Elayne moaned. Rowan brushed past her, scowling. A flash of strangely colored lighting struck just outside the cave entrance. Elayne whimpered and sunk into a small ball on the floor. Oliver was wiping water of his glasses. Cedric peered outside. It was getting darker.
Kannon began wandering further into the cave. Rowan sat down quietly in a corner, and clutched the sides of her head.
THUMP THUMP, THUMP THUMP…
“Ahh finally! I can see!” Oliver exclaimed happily. Just then a wet wind blew in and hail hit the cave entrance. *BOOM* The thunder pounded. Rowan stood up slowly, her eyes narrowed, and covering her ears. “Come on. We have to go further into the cave.” She said. “But it’s dark back there.” Cedric said, scratching his head. Rowan glared at him. “Just do as I say!!!” She snapped. Lightning struck in the entrance of the cave. And so they hurried deeper into the dark, cold cave…
THUMP, THUMP, THUMP THUMP….
