Taming & KO Tips

How do I tame a quetzal? Tips and strategies on taming and knocking out a quetzal.
A Guide On Taming A Quetzal, Solo And On Console, Without The Net Gun:
1. Tame a high level Argentavis. Mine had 5,000 stamina and 120% movement speed. Tamed a level 135 at the volcano.
2. Make grappling hooks, parachutes and over 200 tranquilliser darts (I only ended up using 14)
3. Practice the method. Whistle your Argy to follow you, once it’s in the air, grapple onto it’s stomach. From there, look up and hit LB + Up on the D Pad. This is the ‘go here’ whistle command, which does NOT appear in the whistle wheel.
(This can cause problems - make sure you have assigned your Argy to a separate whistle group (in the inventory menu) from your other dinos and set that group as your active group. Otherwise, all your nearby dinos will try to reach the ‘go here’ location too)
4. Use the triggers to move up and down. I recommend moving down a little on the grapple - it seems easier.
5. Press crouch to release yourself from the grappling hook. This will cause you to fall in you’re in the air, so make sure you have a parachute - I think it might need to be on your hotbar.
6. Load up your Argy with everything, and then find your Quetzal. Land nearby. Repeat Step 3. Make sure your ‘go here’ is ABOVE the Quetzal - it’s easier to shoot it this way.
6.5. You can find Quetzals around but not limited to, the red obelisk, volcano, and cold north areas.
7. On xbox, the ‘go here’ command will make you change and/or put away your weapon. Best thing is to make sure your rifle is loaded after shooting before using the command again to catch up to the Quetzal.
8. If you reach the ground and can’t find your Quetzal, track it from the taming menu in the inventory. It should have a big icon over it’s head once you have tracked it.
BONUS INFO:
- Shooting the wings does not count as part of the hitbox. The best place to hit is the head, but the body is far easier.
- The Quetzal turns very often and quick during combat.
- It may be worth bringing a raft or making a small base with backup tools and armour and a bed nearby - especially if you’re in a more dangerous area. If you choose to do this, do it during Step 6.
- According to a reddit thread, trying to use a scorpion to knockout a Quetzal has a 70% death rate. This is because scorpions deal both melee and torpor damage. Both of them increase with leveling.
All your submissions SUCK. Ways to find: go out of render distance from the red ob and tidy save. This resets the quetzal wherever they are. Stay on the obelisk for around 30 seconds, and one is right their. How to tame: kill the quetzal via pteranodon Argentavis or really any flyer. Except griffin. You don’t need a quetzal if you have a griffin. Gather the quetzals implant and then watch ads for a ton of amber, (trust me it doesn’t take too long) and once you have your amber and the quetzals implant simply build a 3 wooden pillar tall trap around the obelisk and cover any holes with either your foundations, pillars, or walls if you need it. Simply revive the quetzal, knock it out, and tame with preferably red kibble because taming it takes forever. And enjoy your new quetzal.
All you need is a Griffin and tranqs because you can shoot off the back of them
On mobile, Quetzals can be found near the obelisks, I like to look near the red obelisk. You may have to look around for a while and maybe do a tidy save
Just tamed lvl 196 from wyvern. Needs some patience as you land one hit at time (you can try 2 longnecks) , but it has one advantage, you can sprint after hit infront of quetz and change his direction as it tries to escape from you. Another option is to use low level slingshot to make him flee, for example from water to land. Either way you just fly infront and dismount wyvern to take a shot, you can even walk up his head, it's impossible to fall down. Don't forget to whistle wyvern on follow to stay in air.
ON XBOX/PS/PC:
WITHOUT ANOTHER QUETZAL:
Use a griffin or a tapejara to tame it. With a griffin, control it’s direction of movement and knock it out with tranq darts. With a tapejara, whistle attack target and whistle passive using the corresponding buttons.
WITH QUETZAL:
Build a large stone WALL container and fly in front of it head on. Make sure it gets trapped first, then close it off with walls. Knock it out.
ON MOBILE:
Use dodo arrows to shoot it and lead it into behemoth gates. Make large walls and ceilings to block it in. YOU CANNOT USE ANOTHER QUETZAL, the wild one will just glitch through it.
I looked for this for several hours at each obelisk and around mountains i finnaly found it near blue obelisk to tame solo i grappled my argy had it chase it then knocked out with shock darts just make sure your argy doesn't hit it
(no tapejara!) what worked for me was to get a friend and a bird with high stamina, i used my argy, get potent and normal tranqs, i dangled my friend above it as he shot down at it. because the quetzal is so slow, it’s easy to keep up and above it, had it in about 5 minutes!
If your playing extinction you can use snow owl and go above a quetzal, do a freeze attack, it will fall and then trap it with gateways.
Use honey to lure to the ground then place dino gates on top of it
If you need to grab a second quetzal for breeding and you already have one, I recommend using your first quetzal to chain bola the secons one and place stone gates on its neck, body, and legs. You can then proceed to tranq it no problem. Oh, and you might want to bring some spiked walls to keep the predators out.
For taking a quest first time, first game a low lvl so you can later catch a high 100+ quetz. First get a high level argentavis and get flak armor with water and food. Get 10 grapples and 10 parachutes, preload the crossbow with the grapple and add it to your inventory, also put the parachutes in your bar. If it’s a level 15 or so get 30-40 tranq darts or get 20 shocking tranq darts. Find the quetz and get near it in the air have your crossbow in your hand before you get on the argen, when you are near the quetz jump off your argen and equip the para, then immediately grapple argen. When you’ve done that, shoot a dart at the quetz then send your argen after it using the whistle, since quetz fly towards 50,50 you are near water, count how many times you hit it to make sure it doesn’t knock out over water, if it knocks out near 50,50 make sure you immediately put spike walls all the way around it. Once you’ve done that kill all creatures around, then give it prime and 200 narcotics. Cryo
The best way to tame a quetzal is that you shot from a griffon of the quetzal
Simply get a snow owl, find a quetz, once in a safe place, freeze it out of the sky,the quetz will walk for a few seconds.freeze again and place 4 dinosaur gates.
Guys the Leftover tranq darts from the rex as well as a few tranq arrows to take it down. Especially because I only had 3 grapple and 6 parachutes. It had insane torpor.
I got a ascendant qutez saddle from the ark mobile pursuit hunt argentavis. My argy killed all of them easy, the saddle has 86 armor which is decent I guess. So I am going to tame a quetz. I have a lot of amno leftover from a rex I tamed so I am going to look for a 110 I saw a while ago.
To Tame A Quetzal:
- Find Your Quetzal
- Hop on the passenger seat of your Tapejara
- Direct your Tapejara by whistling it when in the air
- Tranq the Quetz from the Tapejara until it is knocked out (Don’t knock out over water)
- Feed it Exceptional Kibble or Meat
Now You Have A Quetzal!
You Can Also Tame More Quetzals Much Easier
Is a quetz better than a giga? There is a 110 kinda close to my base.
Use tapejara not argy I used argy and I died so I made a vow never to play ark again
