Under the waves: chapter 6

Pearl rested on the sea floor, before inspecting trench’s injury. It was still oozing a strange blue liquid, which she assumed was the tranquilizer. Trench was awake now, but he could hardly move without exhausting himself. After a time, she helped trench to the surface to breath. She saw the human rafts everywhere, the humans on top frantically moving about as if they could keel over dead at any time. She kept swimming on the surface, keeping a snow pace as she didn’t want to exhaust herself and trench by going faster. Plus, she should save her energy for when they need to escape. At about mid-day, trench was able to swim on his own again, although he was still pretty tired. Then she saw it. A large island, poking out of the water like I giant stadium with a rioting jungle on top, and steep cliffs surrounding it on all sides. The sanctuary, where she would be safe and maybe even see her family again, if they were still alive. She flinched away from the thought that her mother and sister didn’t survive the attack on their old home, a giant coral reef. As she got closer, she just realized the size of the island. Trench stopped dead in his tracks, mouth slightly open as he gaped at the giant island. “Woah.” He breathed. Pearl smiled. “Just wait till you see it on the inside, if the stories are true.” Her smile quickly turned into a frown when she saw the rafts clustered around the base of the island. “Looks like we’ve got trouble. Get ready to tip the rafts.” Pearl instructed trench. So they submerged and got closer. Not too many rafts this time, only three. She put on a burst of speed, launching the raft she was under into the air. The raft landed on another raft, which sunk it, as trench tore the last raft apart. Snacking on the humans from the successful hunt, pearl led the way to the entrance. A large bed of seaweed. She swam right through it and into the tunnel concealed behind it, stopping at one of the breathing holes with trench. When she emerged, soft green light covered everything. But it was eerily quiet. She looked around, at the red pebbles on the shore and for any other sign of life. She inhaled deeply, and recoiled. The stench of blood was all she could smell. She beached herself at the red pebble shore, before jumping by back into the water. The pebbles were covered in blood, not naturally red. Trench inhaled sharply, and pearl followed his gaze toward a large cave. She approached it cautiously, and peered inside. She knew it even before she saw it, the reek of blood and fear, the blood coating the shore. But seeing the corpses inside was so, so much worse.
