A Guide On Taming A Quetzal, Solo And On Console, Without The Net Gun:
1. Tame a high level Argentavis. Mine had 5,000 stamina and 120% movement speed. Tamed a level 135 at the volcano.
2. Make grappling hooks, parachutes and over 200 tranquilliser darts (I only ended up using 14)
3. Practice the method. Whistle your Argy to follow you, once it’s in the air, grapple onto it’s stomach. From there, look up and hit LB + Up on the D Pad. This is the ‘go here’ whistle command, which does NOT appear in the whistle wheel.
(This can cause problems - make sure you have assigned your Argy to a separate whistle group (in the inventory menu) from your other dinos and set that group as your active group. Otherwise, all your nearby dinos will try to reach the ‘go here’ location too)
4. Use the triggers to move up and down. I recommend moving down a little on the grapple - it seems easier.
5. Press crouch to release yourself from the grappling hook. This will cause you to fall in you’re in the air, so make sure you have a parachute - I think it might need to be on your hotbar.
6. Load up your Argy with everything, and then find your Quetzal. Land nearby. Repeat Step 3. Make sure your ‘go here’ is ABOVE the Quetzal - it’s easier to shoot it this way.
6.5. You can find Quetzals around but not limited to, the red obelisk, volcano, and cold north areas.
7. On xbox, the ‘go here’ command will make you change and/or put away your weapon. Best thing is to make sure your rifle is loaded after shooting before using the command again to catch up to the Quetzal.
8. If you reach the ground and can’t find your Quetzal, track it from the taming menu in the inventory. It should have a big icon over it’s head once you have tracked it.
BONUS INFO:
- Shooting the wings does not count as part of the hitbox. The best place to hit is the head, but the body is far easier.
- The Quetzal turns very often and quick during combat.
- It may be worth bringing a raft or making a small base with backup tools and armour and a bed nearby - especially if you’re in a more dangerous area. If you choose to do this, do it during Step 6.
- According to a reddit thread, trying to use a scorpion to knockout a Quetzal has a 70% death rate. This is because scorpions deal both melee and torpor damage. Both of them increase with leveling.
More Quetzal Taming & KO Tips
The fun way is to jump off and grapple to your argie and whistle it to attack and since argies are slow it won’t catch up in time so tranq till it goes out also bring parachutes
Idk why everyone makes this so complicated with all the grappling stuff all you have to do is,
1. Get or use a tapejara that’s a low level with a couple levels into movement speed
2. Get a rifle or crossbow with either darts or tranqs
3. Find a quetzal and then go to the back of your tapejara and set to attack the quetzal
(Since quetzals have high health and ur using a low level tapejara you can actually leave the tapejara to attack the quetzal, it’ll be fine)
4. Knock It out, not over water, and put whatever you want into it and ban you have a quetzal
Btw, you don’t need to worry about the tapejara’s stamina, it doesn’t decrease while you sit in the back seat
Guys this is the ersieht was to tame a quetzal. All you need is a tapejara.
1) Whisle your Tapejara to follow you
2) Ride you Tapejara and surch for a quetzal
3) When you found a quetzal, go an the back of the Tapejara (dont forget that you have to make the follow whisle on Tapejara, otherwise the will Flyer to the ground)
4) Make the attack whisle while you are on the Tapejata's back, so your tapejara will follow the quetzal.
5) Just shoot the quetzal with tranq darts/arrow and make the passive whisle on the Tapejara when he is too close to the Quetzal.
6) Repeat that till the quetzal gets knocked out and enjoy your quetzal taming.
TIPP: They spawn near the Obelisk and fly trought the whole map after spawning. GOOD LUCK!
If you manage to knock a quetzal out, try starve taming. If you never tried starve taming it’s just leaving a Dino’s hunger go to half way or lower and then you start feeding. I’ve done this many times and it’s very useful taming trick.
Use a tapejara, sit on the passager seat and set it on my target. Then make it fly to the quetz. Shoot the quetz with any sort of tranq ammo. Do this reapetly and you Have knocked quetz👌
Important note !!
Quetz will not follow you if you eat a rare flower!
If you have any dodo arrows, make a trap (tutorials on YouTube) the shoot the quetzal with the dodo arrows. The quetzal will get triggered at you and lead it to the trap.
To solo tame, grapple to an argentavis, and be ready to set your argentavis to passive and attack my target on command. Just maintain a process of having your argentavis chase the quetzal, when you get close enough set it passive, then fire a tranq dart/arrow. This is a long process, but it is by far the easiest way to solo tame, unless you already have a quetzal.
Bro whoever said that god to red obelisk and do a tidy save and get a quetzel bruh my game gave me a titanosour instead of quetzel 🤣
Best way is to use a partner to help you chase it down w a argii or Pt but in my opinion the best way is to get a griffin and shoot at it. Hit box kinda sucks but wait and shoot and wait again while you chase it with tranqs. If it gets stuck on the side of a cliff while chasing it down … then much easier. Best solo way.
