A Guide On Taming A Quetzal, Solo And On Console, Without The Net Gun:
1. Tame a high level Argentavis. Mine had 5,000 stamina and 120% movement speed. Tamed a level 135 at the volcano.
2. Make grappling hooks, parachutes and over 200 tranquilliser darts (I only ended up using 14)
3. Practice the method. Whistle your Argy to follow you, once it’s in the air, grapple onto it’s stomach. From there, look up and hit LB + Up on the D Pad. This is the ‘go here’ whistle command, which does NOT appear in the whistle wheel.
(This can cause problems - make sure you have assigned your Argy to a separate whistle group (in the inventory menu) from your other dinos and set that group as your active group. Otherwise, all your nearby dinos will try to reach the ‘go here’ location too)
4. Use the triggers to move up and down. I recommend moving down a little on the grapple - it seems easier.
5. Press crouch to release yourself from the grappling hook. This will cause you to fall in you’re in the air, so make sure you have a parachute - I think it might need to be on your hotbar.
6. Load up your Argy with everything, and then find your Quetzal. Land nearby. Repeat Step 3. Make sure your ‘go here’ is ABOVE the Quetzal - it’s easier to shoot it this way.
6.5. You can find Quetzals around but not limited to, the red obelisk, volcano, and cold north areas.
7. On xbox, the ‘go here’ command will make you change and/or put away your weapon. Best thing is to make sure your rifle is loaded after shooting before using the command again to catch up to the Quetzal.
8. If you reach the ground and can’t find your Quetzal, track it from the taming menu in the inventory. It should have a big icon over it’s head once you have tracked it.
BONUS INFO:
- Shooting the wings does not count as part of the hitbox. The best place to hit is the head, but the body is far easier.
- The Quetzal turns very often and quick during combat.
- It may be worth bringing a raft or making a small base with backup tools and armour and a bed nearby - especially if you’re in a more dangerous area. If you choose to do this, do it during Step 6.
- According to a reddit thread, trying to use a scorpion to knockout a Quetzal has a 70% death rate. This is because scorpions deal both melee and torpor damage. Both of them increase with leveling.
