The Obelisk
-Chapter 55-
“What do you need?” Prince Coal asked.
“Where are all the prisoners’ belongings kept?” Forest asked him.
The Terror bird thought for a moment. “Uh—follow me.” He turned and marched swiftly down the hall. Forest and the others followed close behind.
“Leaving so soon?” Whispered a voice.
Forest whirled, startled, to see a red and grey Megalosaurus, sitting up comfortably in his cell. He recognized the voice—and realized this must be the assassin.
“I—“ Forest began—
“I’m gonna stop you right there,” The assassin interrupted. “Cause I know what you’re gonna say. And don’t worry. This is
Y o u r epic escape. I’m not gonna waste my time and ruin it like any other prisoner would.”
Forest sighed. “Thankyou.”
“As for me,” the Megalosaur continued, “my escape is coming pretty soon. You’ll see.”
“I hope you don’t kill whoever it is you’re supposed to kill,” Forest whispered.
The Megalosaur blinked, un-answering. “You should get going,” he said. “Before someone sees you. Good luck. Now shoo.”
Forest hurried to catch up to the others. After a minute of walking, he was trailing shortly behind the Prince.
Coal walked swiftly, his memory of the stronghold being put to good use.
Forest had noticed—when he first came out of the cell—that the Prince was very small. He had small set shoulders and a lean, thin body, long legs, and was at least several
claw-lengths shorter than Forest. But Forest knew—despite his small size, that he was a quick and smart prince, and he may be Emperor one day.
Prince Coal skidded to a stop at a large door, quickly checking the dark halls for any soldiers. He then took his ring of keys and pulled out the largest one, then clicked it in.
Forest and Rust slowly pushed the door open, and it mercifully let out no sound. It was pitch black inside, but Forests night vision helped a tad bit.
“We’re here. Now what are you looking for?”
“There’s green and blue sack somewhere in here, right?”
“Most likely. If you had before you were captur—“ the Terror bird fell silent, squinting into the dark room. “What is t h a t?”
Forest followed the Princes gaze, and saw a slight green glow emitting from a box in the far end of the room. His heart sped up.
“There it is!” Spark whispered.
“There is what?” Nyx asked, pushing herself forward. “Ack—what is that???”
“Shhhh,” Crimson and Rust hissed.
“Sorry,” Nyx whispered.
The five slowly entered the small room, trying their best to stay quiet. Forest was the first one there—he sighed and carefully pulled the sack out from the box. He pulled the rune out.
Prince Coal was the second to step next to him. Nyx, a few talon-steps behind, gasped quietly. The others approached as well.
“That’s—“ Coal stared at the rune, it’s light reflecting in his wide eyes. “That’s a rune—how did you get that?”
“We found it,” Forest said.
The prince looked angry and scared at the same time. “You shouldn’t have that. It needs to be kept somewhere safe.” He reached his wings forward to grab it.
“No—don’t touch it!!” Nyx cried.
But the Prince had already reached—and tried to grab it from Forest—when a tiny sizzle of lightning burst from the rune—and struck him. The Prince yowled and fell back.
“What the—“ Forest realized he had clutched the rune harder when the Prince had reached to grab it.
The lightning in his claws slowly died down and disappeared. The runes glow dimmed down slightly.
“You’ve bonded with it well,” Nyx whispered.
“I’ve what?” Forest asked.
The Prince lifted himself from the ground, shaking off his feathers. “I shouldn’t have tried to grab it from you,” he said. “Im sorry.”
Forest realized that Rust, Crimson, Spark, and Bramble were staring at him with horrified looks. He was just as shocked as they were.
“How did that happen?” Crimson
“You don’t know?” Nyx asked. “It—“
“Prince Coal?”
The carnivores turned around.
A tiny Terror bird stood in the entrance to the room—her eyes curious and confused.
“Peak,” Coal blurted. “Shouldn’t you be in the Hatchery?”
“What you doing in—“ she spotted Forest and the others next to him and let out a shuddering gasp. She took a step back, her eyes wide, her tiny, fluffy wings shaking.
“Peak, no, This isn’t what it looks like!” Coal took a step towards her.
“Monsters!” Peak whispered.
“No—“
“Monsters!” Peak turned and fled down the hall, crying loudly.
“Peak, no!” Coal jumped forward to chase after her, but Crimson reached with one talon and pulled him back. “there’s no way you’ll catch her,” Crimson hissed.
“The whole stronghold will know we’re in here,” Coal gasped.
“Then we should get out of here.” Bramble said. “Now!”

Chapter 3
- The Nazgûl
The council had gathered. They had been discussing fighting back for months now. Finally, they had an army. The war would start soon. Grant had taken the majority of the ark. Their first strike would be the desert. Everyone who wasn’t on Grant’s side was fighting. From people like Alex, who were 9, to people who were in their 60s. The next few years would mark some of the most gruesome battles of the arks. Many would die, many would become heroes. As the two armies faced each other in the desert, no one moved a muscle. Once someone fired an arrow, the battles would begin. They wanted peace as long as possible. Finally, an enemy soldier was felled. Few know who the shot came from, but they will not tell. No matter who did it, the war had begun.
Chapter 17
- The Nazgûl
About half the soldiers had made it across with the other half still on the other side. They had to get a running start and jump over the edge onto the next pillar, then to the other side of the canyon. But the men didn’t complain and did it without fear, and everyone made it. After hours of fighting, the fort in the canyon was taken. They restocked on arrows and took as much provisions as they could. Many were nervous about climbing down the cliff, the Spark said they should go through the forest until they could make it onto the shore. He had planned a rendezvous point down the shore. When they finally made it to the beach, they could see the raft coming. They cheered. The reinforcements had arrived.
Chapter 16
- The Nazgûl
“I can’t believe he wants us to climb the cliff. There’s no way everyone will make it up there alive.” Brian said. Spark was getting everyone geared up.
“I admit, it is a risky idea, but it is the best we’ve got. It beats wandering around through those swamps again to find a path up.” Chad said.
In a few minutes, everyone was ready. Spark shot a couple grappling hooks. He went first, and everyone else followed. The cable on the hooks were thin and rough. Several soldiers cut their hands pulling themselves up, but continued to climb. Chad almost fell coming up over the edge, but Spark caught him. Everyone had made it. They were at the highest point on the edge. They could simply just drop down on the enemy and shoot them from above. The first side of the canyon fell easily, but now they had to get to the other side, which was either a long jump over a mad rushing river hundreds of feet below them, or a long trek around the rest of the canyon.
Chapter 14
- The Nazgûl
The soldiers were ready. They had gathered on the edge of the swamp. Somewhere in that mess of trees and filthy water were the enemy soldiers. However, while much of the animals were hiding because of the battle, the leeches were not. It would be a difficult task to fight and avoid the leeches. The general gave the order to move in. Their entire force was actually four groups. One general had been chosen to lead everyone. While everyone knew he was a good soldier, however, at times, they doubted his strategies, and were desperately longing for Spark to get there. Suddenly, arrows began wizzing by. Every attempted to take cover behind trees. They would have to make mad dashes from tree to tree to advance on their enemy. A couple soldiers already had leeches in them. Many soldiers fell as they all dashed from one tree to the next. Finally, the remaining soldiers made it to the enemy. The sword clashing began. Their training had paid off. The enemy was much less skilled, but there were more of them. The soldiers began to weary. After a week of fighting, they were losing hope. Suddenly, a horn blew. Spark had arrived.
Chapter 13
- The Nazgûl
Spark had been traveling for days. He hoped he would make it to the swamps in time. He may have been in the middle of a blizzard, but he was enjoying himself. Traveling reminded of when he was just a mercenary. Traveling beneath the stars. Going from village to village looking for work. He missed the traveling. But he wanted the fighting to be over, he had never known times where he wasn’t fighting for his life or the lives of others. He began to wonder about the soldiers in the highlands. Had they taken it? Had the rafts arrived? Had the soldiers been sent? In a few hours, Spark could hear the fighting. He had arrived at the swamp. He rushed through the trees to find the soldiers.
Chapter 1
- The Nazgûl
Bugs. Everywhere. They were huge. Grant had already killed a few. It was hot too. Very hot. Oh, and don’t forget the venom spitting crazy climbing Komodo dragons. Grant hated those. He would take over this island. Anyone who stood against him would fall, but he needed power. He already had armor from the bugs corpses. Then he saw it. A dragon. He needed one of those. He travelled to the nests and raised one as his own. He flew in, killing the rest and raising the eggs. As he raided village after village, people slowly joined him. His army was growing. Soon, he could assault the counsel set up in the south west. Soon, he could have the ark.
Chapter 12
- The Nazgûl
The rafts were moving in position to form a barrier on the ocean. The strategy was to trap Grant and to move in on his fortress from all sides. Bret had read the list of soldiers to be the reinforcements for the soldiers in the west that morning. Alex had been one of the soldiers requested.
“See Alex, I told you you would see Mom and Dad again.”
“But what about you?”
“I’ll be fine. I need to stay here until you guys get past Viking Bay. Then, when all this is finally over, I’ll see you all again.”
She was more trying to convince herself. She had a strange feeling that she would never see her parents again. She just hoped Alex would see them. As the raft began its long journey, Jennifer watched until it disappeared. Now everyone in the highlands just had to sit and wait until the west was taken.
Chapter 2
- The Nazgûl
Out in the jungle village, there was a great celebration. There had just been a newborn. This child was the first and only person to be born on the arks while they were active. And they called her name Alex. Alex had and older sister named Jennifer, who was 8 years old at the time. Their family lived happily for many years, but when Alex was 9 and Jennifer was 17, the village got news of a war. All who were able were required to fight.
——————————————————————————————————
Four years before the start of the war, a nine year old boy was wandering in the jungle. He had been surviving on his own since he was two. Well, more like running and hiding. However, just the other week a man found him and began to train him. He became a hireable mercenary. For many years, they fought together. But one day, a raptor pack attacked. They fended of the first few raptors, but the dinos just kept coming. They won, but the boys mentor was not going to survive. He wandered the jungle. When some one found him they asked him who he was. He said he was a mercenary and didn’t have a name. The person hired him for the army and told him he was going to be the Spark of hope they needed. From that point on, he called himself Spark.
Chapter 18
- The Nazgûl
Alex had enjoyed the ride on the raft. Many others had not. Nearly everyone else had gotten seasick. She wondered what would happen when they got there. Would Spark be there? Would they still be fighting somewhere else? Would they have moved on without them? She looked over at the other raft. The soldiers were still bandaging their wounds. They had been attacked by a whale and lost a raft. Piranhas had swarmed to the reck. Everyone crammed onto the other rafts. They all made it out alive, but many had been bitten pretty bad. She looked ahead and saw the soldiers on the shore. As the raft pulled up, she saw her mother and father standing on the shore. She jumped in the water and swam as fast as she could. The three of them stood there hugging for several minutes. But nonnegotiable of them had any idea of the troubles they would soon have to face in Viking Bay.
Chapter 11
- The Nazgûl
The forces in the highlands had no idea that the redwoods had been taken. Bret took the troops down the shore past the cliffs where they would not be seen. When he found a slope, everyone prepared to fight. The base would fall easily. It had now walls of protection. It had one great building for armoring troops and one watchtower. Bart had also spotted a suspicious looking box in the base. However, he did not know what it could be for. But he did not have time to think about it more. The troops rushed up the hill, surprising the enemy. As the enemy soldiers began to thin, there was a loud creaking. The gates to the strange box were opening. They heard a deafening roar. Then a dragon flew out. It began to rain fire from the skies. Many were burned. The archers loosed arrow after arrow. Except for Alex. Having seen a ballista turret on the watchtower, she began to climb it. Nearly a third of their attack force was down. Alex looked around. There wasn’t a single spear bolt. She loaded her sword. She took careful aim and fired. The sword dug into the dragon’s neck. Just then, she heard the booming of drums. The rafts had arrived. Soon, the east would be fortified, and troops would move out to help take the west. The war would soon be over.
Sorry. Been held up with you know what in silver, pink, and navy dyes.
Chapter 6
- The Nazgûl
The days went on. Jennifer continued to advance in the medical arts. Alex had begun to advance in combat. Many marveled at her skill at such a young age. However, some still made fun of her. One day, as Jennifer was packing her supplies, she heard yelling coming from the center of camp. She went to investigate. The entire camp had formed a circle. In the center, two soldiers were fighting. Jennifer recognized one. It was Alex. Finally, Spark came out.
“What is the reason for this? Someone in the crowd, tell me what happened.” He said.
“The boy came up to her and said that she was to small and weak to fight, so she fought back.” Someone in the crowd said.
“Is this what happened?” Spark asked the boy. He slowly nodded his head.
“Let me make this clear,” Spark began. “There is to be no fighting or teasing in this camp. You have all come a long way since we began. We are leaving tomorrow to the desert. I expect all of you to be ready to march out when I give the word.”
At that, everyone rushed to their tents to begin packing. They were finally going to battle.
Chapter 5
- The Nazgûl
The medical tents had been running all night. There were many wounded.
“So, what’s your story?” The medic asked. She seemed very old, but had a gentle hand and was very kind. Currently, she was treating Jennifer’s wounds.
“My what?” Jennifer asked back.
“Your story. How you came to be in the war, what it was like for you before the war.”
“Well, we lived here for a while, then my little sister Alex was born. We lived happily for many years. Then the war came. We were sent to fight in the desert. Our mom and dad went to fight in the swamp.”
“How young is your sister?” The doctor asked.
“Nine.”
“The poor girl. How can they make someone that young fight in the army? Well, I hope she stays healthy. Your all patched up.”
“That was fast.”
“Ha! That’s because I know all the tricks to medical business. I’ve got it all drilled into my brain. And you’ll find that my bandages will work faster.”
“Well why don’t you tell the other doctors?”
“They never ask. They never listen when I try to tell them. They think I am just a crazy old woman. But, because I am old, I will need someone to teach. I won’t be around forever. Are you interested?”
“I would be happy to learn.”
“Good. I can teach you at night. I would recommend you take sword training though. We need someone who can go out into the battle field and help people, but still be able to defend themselves. It’s normally the walk back to camp that causes a soldier to die. They don’t get treatment soon enough.”
“Well then, I guess I will see you tomorrow night.” Jennifer said. She left to go to her tent. Tomorrow was the first day of training. Everyone needed as much sleep as possible to be ready.
Chapter 4
- The Nazgûl
The armies fought for hours. Neither side was experienced. Grant’s men were simply villagers that he captured. The other side, was made up of a ragtag band of soldiers who had never witnessed a battle once. Only a few men died. Nearly all were injured in some way. Neither side had one. Both had lost. As Grant’s men returned, his general stationed there ridiculed them.
“You call yourselves soldiers! We should have won that fight. You must be trained to fight like true warriors. We start tomorrow. Anyone who is late will be tortured.”
Back at the council’s camp(the rebellion is what I will call them), a war council was formed. Spark was put on.
“What will we do?” One member asked.
“We must train our men.” Another answered.
“But who will do it?” The first asked.
As they looked around the room, Spark volunteered.
“I will train them.” He said.
“Alright then. We need them ready as soon as possible.” Everyone agreed.
Spark took the men into a place near the jungle. It was safer there than in the desert.
“Over the next weeks, you will be trained in the art of war. We will start in the morning. Anyone who is late, will miss their meals and have the chores of cleaning up. If the plan goes as hoped, you will be ready to fight in a week.”
