Chapter 8

- The Nazgûl

They had been marching all day. They had finally reached the edge of the dunes. Everyone was tired and thirsty. On the other side of the dunes stood the other army, ready to protect the mountain ridge and their territory that went beyond. After Spark’s men got a drink from the stream, they continued to march. Ten minutes later, the armies stood facing each other. Clearly, both sides had been preparing. However, while Spark had trained everyone in their skill and battle, Grant’s generals had just made reenforced armor and sharper weapons for their men. The swordsman unsheathed their swords. The archers notched arrows. For one dreadful moment there was complete silence. Then, there was a rumbling. Everyone first looked to the mountain, expecting an avalanche. Not a single rock had moved. They turned their heads toward the ruined city. What appeared to be causing the rumbling was a sandstorm, but it was a very small one. Then a horror of realization came in Spark’s mind.

“Death worm! Don’t move and it won’t feel our vibrations through the sand!” Spark shouted as loud as he could.

However, the other army didn’t not hear, and anyone who did hear wasn’t going to take orders from the enemy. They formed up for battle facing the approaching dust cloud. When the cloud got to them, it suddenly disappeared and the rumbling stopped. Everyone was quite confused. Then the death worm shot out of the ground in the middle of Grant’s forces. Nearly two thirds of the men that went to the desert were killed by the death worm while the other soldiers attempted to climb the mountain in order to make it to the redwoods base. Now all Spark had to do was get everyone across the remaining dunes, past the death worm without it attacking, climb the mountain, and then they could figure out what to do next. Actually, the death worm had been quite easy to deal with. In fact, they didn’t have to deal with it at all. Having killed all the soldiers, it had burrowed deep underground to feed on them all. It did not care if there was more food. The army began to climb the mountain. A couple soldiers slipped, but someone caught them before anything bad happened. When they all were on top of the ridge, they looked below them. There it was. Deep in the redwoods, they could see the scouting tower of the main base. The next battle would soon begin.
