All the Light we Cannot See (Previous in Broodmother)

Chapter 15

It was already the dead of night by the time Max and the rest of the Soviet platoon got back to camp. The pup in Max’s coat was fast asleep as he quickly put the pup in his bag. Around the camp were repaired tanks, vehicles, and fire still burning from the attack. Tents were being set up around the camp, and the soldiers were getting prepared to doze off.

“Max, the commander wants to see you.” Max looked around and saw Kostya behind him.

“Lead the way.” Max followed Kostya through the medic tent, the injuries of the Soviet soldiers were so gruesome and horrifying that Max decided to stop looking inside. Dead bodies were being buried a bit farther outside their camp, the Soviets parked their vehicles and tanks into a circle formation.

Finally they arrived at the Officers tent, at least six officers were discussing something in Russian.

Kostya and Max saluted, however he was not used to saluting to a whole different country officer. The officers called upon Kostya and spoke with him about something that Max couldn’t understand. Kostya nodded and returned to Max.

“The officers got a message outside this place, the Americans were able to coordinate where we were and contacted the British to send ships to evacuate us, we were ordered to tell the camp about this and we’re setting out at 0600. Come on.”

Kostya and Max ran back to the base and rang the alert bell. Soviet soldiers rushed outside their tents with their guns at the ready, thinking there was an attack.

Kostya shouted at the confused Soviet soldier and they gathered around them. Kostya climbed onto a jeep and shouted toward the crowd.

“Ofitser prikazal nam vystupit' v Yuzhnyy okean v 25 milyakh otsyuda, amerikantsy obnaruzhili, gde my nakhodimsya, i anglichane nemedlenno otpravlyayut korabli dlya evakuatsii. Nam prikazano vystupit' v 06:00, my svobodnoye tovarishchi!”

The Soviet soldiers cheered and whooped, some were hugging each other. Max had never saw the Soviet this happy before, and he understood what Kostya was saying, they were setting out for the ocean tomorrow with a 25 mile path journey.

That morning everyone was cheerful, happy to get out of this place. Engineers were repairing that last bit of damaged parts of the vehicles, soldiers were packing up clothes, water, food, and other important items. Max counted the camp, there were eight trucks, five tanks, and three jeeps with a machine gun. By 0600 all Soviet troops had unloaded onto the vehicles, the tanks would take the front and the three jeeps would take the side and back. Max had never been this happy before, they were going home. Out of the two-hundred U.S. troops and one-thousand Soviet troops, only one-hundred made it out. Max remembered all his friends and comrades at his division, Andrew, Commander Liu, and the rest of the party.

Suddenly something struck him. During all his time here, there was this voice talking to him. What was it? And sure enough as they drove through the snowy terrain, a large floating crystal appeared behind a mountain. There was a blue kite symbol glowing on it. There was an urge for Max to stay in this place, he felt like there was more to this. But then… what?

Was it the dinosaurs that had lived on this island? And most of all, how could World War Two take place two-hundred years ago? Didn’t the dinosaurs live almost 63 million years ago? The thoughts keep swirling around Max, the more he thought about it the more he wanted to stay. The most important question of all was, why did this place even exist? How come people have not discovered this place yet? Were they in a different world?
