Chapter 2
‘Dear Journal,
Things have been going well.’
‘The Wyvern Kingdom is huge and full of life.’
Wingbeats sounded quietly as a dragon soared high above the ground. Tall and rigid spires of rock rose beneath and around her, leading to the huge mountains ahead, sharp and pointed peaks dusted with white snow.
She peered down as she flew, tilting her wings and veering slowly left. She could see the Wyvern Palace standing at the side of the mountain, shining with glass and stone and a tall angled roof that glittered brightly.
‘The Poison Wyverns threw a huge festival outside their homes last night. Everyone was there, even the four tribe generals and King Toxin. Makes sense, though, since he’s a Poison Wyvern. Even he wouldn’t miss that.’
She flapped her wings once. Fire and Lightning Wyverns climbed in and out of their homes by the valley and gorge, the green and blue river rushing through the cliffs softly.
The beautiful pastel colors of Ice Wyverns glittered above her as they flew out from the peaks. Poison Wyverns climbed past the outcroppings and crowded by the place where they had hosted the festival. They were cleaning things up and scavenging food and treasures others had misplaced. She huffed a small laugh and turned once more through the air, beating her wings and flying downwards.
‘My sister is doing well, too. Still strange as always, but I love her. Sometimes it’s hard to figure out what she’s thinking. She seems so curious about the world.’
She landed with a small thump by the valley, looking out at the river.
‘I wonder what she’s doing now.’
“Hey, Bria!”
The Lightning Wyvern turned her head to see two of her friends coming down from the caves by the cliffside. The first one landed with a thump and the other nearly crashed into her. They spent a few moments scuffling about and getting their tails untangled.
“Hi, Bright, hi Ember.” Bria said kindly.
“Sup,” Ember said as Bright pushed away from her.
“How’s the new hunter doing?” Bright asked excitedly, coming up and nudging Bria with a pale gold wing.
Bria chuckled, sitting down. “Good so far. Where’s Nettle?”
“Here,” The Poison Wyvern said tiredly, approaching from behind them. “And don’t ask. Stupid festival got me all over-stimulated last night.” Her grey-green scales were scuffed and her teal eyes half-closed. She looked absolutely done.
Ember laughed, and Bright said, “That was a blast. You guys should have seen Ember and her drums! She was amazing!”
“Aw, sorry I missed that,” Bria said. She’d not been able to be at the festival long, as she got caught up in her night training with Forn as he showed her layout of the kingdom.
“It’s fine.” Ember said. “Hey, you mind if we help you hunt, Bria?”
“Not at all. I’d appreciate that, thanks,” Bria said.
“Ugh, count me out.” Nettle said, settling down in a comfortable position. “By the way, how’s that sister of yours doing?” She asked Bria flatly.
Bria glanced at her and thought for a moment. “She’s good. Better.”
