Tips & Strategies

What are tips for yi ling? Tips and strategies for yi ling in ARK: Survival Ascended & Evolved.
If you don’t have biotoxin, don’t even attempt. I attempted with narcotics and got it but it costed me my sanity.
As of June 2025, wild versions of these can 100% be grabbed by a Karkinos.
They are so annoying, if not looking to tame go run past other creatures and they will most likely agro on them
Use a shield to ward off its feathers and when it dive bombs you hit it with a Z fruit
It is a big bird that has webed wings(not really wings)and it has a pretty big beak and it about as tall as the character a little taller and covered in feathers.
you'll most likely encounter this annoying yet lovely creature while strolling on abberation, it'll start gunning you with feathers ON SIGHT, by far the easiest way to escape them is with a few swings upwards with a Cosmo, wouldn't recommend running on foot as they usually have a gang ready and strapped, overall, hold W or forward and just keep running
There's is a faint red trail that will show up behind it as it circles just before it dives at you. Three bounces and it goes. Throw grenade at top of third bounce
Reposting under proper dino (was posted under Ravager but helped me).
In case anyone is wondering what you need for the different feather types. Also Xbox hold X to change feathers (can’t have pet on shoulder or it brings up Shoulder pet options)
You forcefeed the Yi Ling different stuff for feather variants that have 5min effect:
-Congealed gas balls for **Volatile**
-Narcotics or Biotoxin for **Sedate**
-Tree sap for **Sticky**
-Nameless venom for **Poison**
To Tame bring:
- Good Flak
- Good riot/metal shield 🛡️
- Narcotics or Biotoxin
- A bunch of Plant Z flashbangs
- Food/Kibble
Process:
You need to tank it's fathered attack until your feathered count is greater than 30.
It will try to Dash you (flying dash), if it lands just tank attacks.
Once it dashes you, you need to throw a flashbang (the timing has to be perfect)
If you manage to flash it, it will stop for a while and you feed it Narcs/Biotoxin (have it on your last slot).
Repeat process until its knocked down.
Feed it.
Done.
Difficulty, I'd say it's a 3 or 4 out of 5 depending on your equipment.
Mostly used to fly high above pay2win pyro users, you can pull out weapons while gliding (and if you angle it right the glide is basically infinite) which is big especially on aberration.
Pump stamina to get better feather regen and get infinite airtime by resetting your dash (latch onto vertical objects or shoot 1 feather into anything and rupture it). You have infinite side dashes which give you significant momentum when in the air (turn your mouse 45° and press C+A/D)
It said that this guy eats nameless creatures scurrying around so it could maybe eat nameless and we wouldn’t fear those Gollum looking things early on.
According the creature dossier, which is now available on ARK’s official discord server, the Yi Ling will posses a unique diet of mushrooms, congealed gas balls and Nameless venom that, and I quote, will ‘effect its attacks’. My hypothesis is that when the Yi Ling ingests certain items it will alter the creatures unique arrow attack in a way that best suits the item in question. For example the Nameless venom will create poison arrows whilst the gas balls will likely make explosive arrows. The mushrooms will probably inflict any player characters with the negative debuff of the collectible mushrooms located in the three aberrant zones, for example a Yi Ling that’s ingested Fertile zone mushrooms will confer hallucinations in afflicted player characters. This makes the Yi Long a fearsome prospect to anyone smart enough to use its unique abilities.
QUICK NOTE! This creature will not be added to ARK: Survival Evolved. It will be an exclusive mount to ARK: Survival Ascended, Aberration.
ABILITY/UTILITY
The Yi Qi's ability is very unique, as it uses its feathers as a weapon. The Yi Qi is a very fragile dinosaur, but not weak at all. Usually, in a dual with a raptor, this creature wouldn't stand a chance. But, the Yi Qi soars overhead its target, dropping down its needle like feathers. This will activate a debuff, which make it so the more feathers put into the prey = the more damage the Yi Qi can do to it. The feathers do not do any damage, but they will stack up on each other leaving the target/prey more vulnerable with open wounds.
The Yi Qi can coat its feathers with certain substances or chemicals, such as Ascerbic Mushrooms, Aquatic mushrooms, Narcotic, Bio Toxin, Propellant, Reaper Pheromone Glands, and more.
Each coat has a different outcome/ability.
Ascerbic Mushrooms will act just like the fertile mushrooms, giving the target hallucinations and no oxygen.
Aquatic Mushrooms make it so the target gets a resistance debuff and a freezing spore effect at the same time.
Narcotic/Biotoxin makes the feathers act like a tranq arrow/dart. Now, this is supposed to be way better than scorpions or pachys. Its just about the equivalent to a crossbow or longneck rifle.
Propellant: This will light the feathers on fire, acting as a flame arrow. When shot at a target, the target will go up in flames.
Reaper Pheromone Gland: This cocoons the target and gives the rider a reaper pheromone buff.
TAMING
To tame the ferocious Yi Qi, you must first let it pelt your player with feathers. I recommend doing this on foot, as it will launch at you quicker. Once it lunges at you, hit it with a chain bola or a harpoon net to trap it. once trapped, you will then feed it Mutton or Regular kibble. Repeat this process until tamed.
The Yi Qi is commonly found in the Fertile/Mushroom forest, or even the Luminous Marshlands, but will not be found in the element zone, because unlike rock drakes, they take radiation damage.
SIDE NOTE
A few things, all the stuff listed on here may not be added, so don't come for me if theres something incorrect about this.
Two, I wrote this WAY longer than it is now but I hit the wrong button and it all got erased. sorry.
Three, this dinosaur is pronounced "Yee-Chee", not "Yi qwee"
Four, this is all information from the ark webpage or the Yi Qi dossier.
Hope this helped! One of the first tips. 🦤
I have tamed dozens of these. A 145 will require up to 10 feeds on 1x while a low level can be 2-3 feeds. The biggest issue I run into is when the yi ling flies away or doesn't unlatch after reaching 30 feathers and keeps shooting you. Get out of field of view and she should return to normal. Sometimes you have to restart feather timer if she won't stop shooting from a latch position. Also if they run into trap walls and don't fly up, back out of trap and give her 50 ft of room between you two. Hope this helps
more of a general tip than specifically for yi lings, but if you're solo on a pvp server, save yourself the trouble of farming for stone structures for traps. Mid size creatures like this give you plenty of time to tame them before they do any significant damage to wood builds
So fun fact. When you are frolicking around on your new Yi Ling and get aggro'd by five of them. They follow. For a long time. They will follow as long as you are gliding downward. I find that the best way to loose one is to cling to a wall, jump off, and use the dash to gain altutude and cling to use it again.
You need flak and shield. You need it to hit you and stack the feathers to 30 get ready and it will swoop you and you need the plant z fruit and flash bang it when it’s swooping and feed bio toxin. Into knocks out then its meat tame.
