Journey Chapter 38
Forest woke up as the sun was rising in the sky. He looked to his left as he got up and stretched, he could see the mountains that covered the background of this place when he woke up for the first time. He never thought he would get this close to them while he was here. The mountainous landscape was beautiful with many animals living on it. Seeing the Argentavises and Tapejaras flaying up in the air of from the middle to the peak of the mountains. And as he turned around to see how far they came, he saw nothing but more of the mountains and unrecognizable dunes. But at the base edge of the range, he saw a village, he was in awe by this. He had never seen such a village beside the ruins of castles that were in Runheimr. A human village built on the side of the mountain. It’s yellow stone homes stood out against the black and brown stone of the mountain, smoke coming out of the tops of the buildings. There must’ve been humans there even now. It made Forest wonder what else this place had to it hiding within it’s sand.
He thought it was going to be quick to get out of here. As he sat there staring at the village in the far distance, he started thinking about the day that started all of this. He regretted choosing the obelisk as a spot to bury the rune. If he had chosen a different place none of his friends would be lost, and he would’ve been at the celebration and back with his family by now. Instead they were wandering through the desert trying to reach a place where they can find someone to help them. He tried to shrug off these thoughts and think of something else as he laid there, but they kept coming back and haunting him and how it was his fault. He kept looking at his bag, knowing that the rune would always be there to haunt him and come back to him for some reason or another. But why? There prophecy was fulfilled, they had no reason to have the rune anymore
“Forest, are you awake yet?” Nightfall whispered to him,
“Yeah, I’m awake. I’m sitting and looking at the human village over there.” Forest said.
“Why, it’ just lousy humans, all they do for us is kill us or kidnap us and make us their slaves.”
“Are you excited to see the World’s Scar? And see what lives within?” Nightfall whispered ecstatically,
“Not as much as you are by the sound of it.” Forest whispered, “Do you know what lives in the scar Nightfall?” Forest whispered.
“Yeah, but this will be the first time I’ve ever seen one wild though. I’m also kind of scared though too, they know something that makes me worry about my well being there. You see, the World’s Scar is a trench that ha-” “What are those above us?” Crimson asked while interrupting Nightfall. She sounded genuinely concerned, which was concerning to Forest. She wasn’t one to get concerned.
Forest quickly looked up and saw the silhouettes in the sky, their shape was unusual and unique to anything that he’d ever seen. And he had only ever seen this shape once before. He quickly looked at Methuselah who was looking up at them too.
“Those Crimson, are your guy’s ride into the scar. I can’t walk us in, but these creatures will carry you three in beforehand and I’ll come in after.” Methuselah said reassuringly.
“Okay, but what are they? They look like—” “—Wyverns” Crimson, Forest and Methuselah said in unison.
“Yeah, they should. If they aren’t, I’d be very concerned right now.” Methuselah said,
“So wait, They Are Wyverns!!!” Forest said alarmed.
“Of course, that’s what the World’s Scar is home too Forest.” Nightfall said.
“Wait hold on…” “Can’t, they’re coming in now.” Methuselah said interrupting Crimson.
Swiftly Crimson started snarling and hissing as a green wyvern snatched her off from the back of the group and started to fly away.
“This is gonna be Awesome!!!” Nightfall said as he was quickly grabbed by a blue wyvern and carried off.
Forest started panicking as a red wyvern was coming in fast. Forest quickly grabbed his bag and clinched it with all his might as the dragon came in, it snatched him right off of Methuselah and began to follow the other wyverns. Forest started muttering oh no to himself, but it was loud enough to catch the attention of his carrier.
“You Scared?” The beast yelled,
“Yeah, a lot. But for a lo-” “Shucks, this is nothing. Watch this!!” The dragon interrupted.
Forest watched with horror as the wyvern took a deep breath and flames shot forward and they began to fly into the burning flames. He started screaming like a little hatchling as they went in. He could feel the heat of the flames only for a moment as they came out the other side surprisingly quickly. He could feel the tips of his feathers were singed as they continued flying away. The wyvern started cheering with excitement and laughter. His smile wide and grinning with the adrenaline.
“Want to do that again?” The wyvern yelled taking his eyes off the sky and tilting his head under to look at Forest. Forest’s face said everything but wanting to do that again.
“Blazerunner!!” The green wyvern yelled as it slowed down to fly right beside him and the red wyvern. The red wyvern adjusted his head forward, his demeanor completely changed. He acted like a soldier, like the one’s from the Terror Bird Kingdom, and not once looking at the green wyvern.
“Yes Ma’am!” the red wyvern yelled,
“I would rather not have our passengers traumatized by anyone’s recklessness, especially since they will be our guests. If I catch you again, I will personally make sure you transfer to a more suitable set of duties, is that clear?” The green wyvern yelled.
“Yes Ma’am!” Blazerunner said,
“Now where are you taking our guest?” The green wyvern asked loudly,
“Your nesting caverns Ma’am!” Blazerunner answered.
“Very Good, I’ll meet you there.” The green wyvern said as she sped up her flying and pasted Blazerunner with ease.
Forest noticed that the entire time, Crimson wasn’t aggressive or trying to talk. She wasn’t limp, so he didn’t thing she was unconscious. So he wondered why she was so quiet? But at the moment he had a different question he wanted answered.
“What was her name?” Forest asked Blazerunner with volume,
“Commander Viper, leader of the watch guards and for transport for allies and guests. She was placed by our previous leader President Tempest. She’s very good at her job, enough so that our current leader kept her in charge for as many administrations as she so pleases to stay in.” Blazerunner said.
“What’s she like?” Forest asked yelling,
“When she’s off duty she is a very pleasant creature to meet, nice and friendly to guests and friends alike. But, when she’s on duty it’s a different story.” Blazerunner yelled.
“Why is that?” Forest asked loudly, beginning to feel his throat to hurt.
“As Commander, she has to keep us in check. If that means to be tough in all meanings of the word as deemed necessary and ready to relieve you of duty if you do not comply. She will without a second thought.” Blazerunner yelled.
Forest was amazed by hearing this. She sounded similar to Moonbeam, maybe this was why Crimson was so quiet. He decided not to ask anymore questions and ponder what he just learned.
Forest and Blazerunner made it to the World’s Scar. The place was hotter than anywhere Forest had been before and he was in the middle of the hottest he had ever been before. If that didn’t make it bad enough, at the bottom of the trench was a river of lava that stretched across the entire trench. This place is death and destruction and yet, these wyverns live here. Not only wyverns, but many insects lived along side the river of lava, he could even see what looked like Shadowmanes of fire. They flew through part of the trench and Forest saw some of the wyverns and juveniles that made up this community. Forest was very uneasy being around so many of these dragons. Even though Jethazzar was gone, he can’t get over what one wyvern did to Fjordur. And this place has hundreds or even thousands of them. Right now, Forest didn’t trust them.
He was carried across large amount of the scar until they came out of one side of a pass, they went around a curve and began to slow down near a nest in a crevice on the side of the cliff. Inside Crimson and Nightfall were talking to each other. They looked like they were arguing about something but Forest couldn’t hear what they were saying.
Blazerunner dropped Forest in the nest and looked at Crimson and Nightfall. “Stay in the nest. Methuselah will arrive soon, and will have him explain what’s going on. If you have any questions, Commander Viper will return in a couple hours and answer any of your questions. In the meantime, hangout with Coral when she gets here and maybe she can answer some of your easier questions.” Blazerunner said as he perched there for a moment. He then jumped and started flying away. Forest turned to the others in confusion.
“Do you two know who Coral is?” Forest asked.
