Tips & Strategies

What are tips for oviraptor? Tips and strategies for oviraptor in ARK: Survival Ascended & Evolved.
How to tame:
Step 1: FIND IT
Step 2: STEAL ITS CRAPPED OUT EGG
Step 3: BEAT THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS OUT OF IT
Step 4: FEED IT ITS OWN EGG
Step 5: CONGRATS, NOW CHUCK IT IN THE SEAAAAA
In ASA, the Oviraptor has a setting for egg collection, and a the egg laying buff is turned on while wondering is activated. So over weight them till they the eggs weigh them down. PS they eat meat once tamed. Just keep meat in troughs or eggs will become lunch.
So their easy to knock out, taming it.....not that easy, they eat eggs. The larger the egg, the more efficient it tames. You can tell the size by the weight of the egg. These guys are very useful, put them on wander in your base, and they'll collect all your creatures eggs.
Oviraptor running in fear = Danger
Nothing attacks these guys, but they do run flee from corpses, so it means a creature's been killed near it by something dangerous.
For those who don’t know, this thing is a secret prime meat harvesting GOD! While I’ve been breeding argy for stats and mutations, I tend to get a lot of bad one, so I just kill them. This little guy (who’s making everything lay some more eggs) would run up to the dead body, and attack them. Nothing ever happened, he kept attacking till the body would eventually disappear. One day, the same thing was happening, and I got sick of it, so I grabbed the bird to move it. This thing harvested it. I was shocked. I checked it’s inventory, and it was LOADED! Cooked all of it as fast as I could.
First off, if you're on official rates and you don't have access to a giga egg, get comfy cuz you're taming dodos for the next 2 hours. One male and as many females as you can. They have a chance of laying an egg every time they poop so even though you literally need like 200 for a mediocre Ovi, it still might be faster than waiting for another creature to pop out enough for you. Secondly, do find a way to trap it before you knock it, ANYWHERE that isn't near those dang ichthyornis birds. I had just knocked an oviraptor once when that bird swooped down and just like that I no longer had the amount of eggs I needed. It's happened with narcotics too. Just stay away from those avian beach bums. Third and last of all, the ovi will NOT hold all the eggs it needs to eat all at once. So you'll have to pay attention and keep adding eggs as it eats. This guy needs some serious babysitting while being tamed, but the buff is definitely worth it.
You'll read a lot online that says the weight of the egg determines the taming effectiveness gain. That is B.S.
An argent egg and a carno egg weigh exactly the same but the carno egg is worth about twice the tame percentage.
Note that oviraptors do NOT collect the eggs of your (tribe's) tames. Oviraptors are useful because they will collect wild eggs and will allow you to pick them up without aggro-ing any nearby dinos.
To use them, set them to passive and following you/your flyer, drop them near the egg, fly closer to it, then pick your oviraptor up after it snatches the egg. Fly to a safe place (if you're in dangerous territory) to collect the egg!
higher levels increase range. NOT melee
you do not need to increase weight, it will pick up all eggs in its range.
make sure it has food in the trough or it will eat eggs. and yes, it prefers the big eggs over the small when it gets hungry.
the egg buff does work. load with rocks and put on wander. works even better if using mated pair of oviraptors. but buff doesn’t stack.
For beginners or people who don't want to risk getting eggs from bigger dinos, just use dodo eggs since dodo's lay eggs so much.
Don't feed them small special eggs usually used to Extraordinary kibble. Gave it a Griffin egg, and only gave me 10% taming.
You'll encounter these guys in the grass lands, beaches, and redwoods.
