Draft Model #2

Written by a fabulous 5th grade teacher

Adapted by Ben

Ben is working on a REALISTIC FICTION story, but the story is incomplete. He has written an introduction to the story and explains the problem for the characters. Complete the story with an ending that makes sense.

BRRRRRRRRINGGGGGGG! The morning school bell rang which meant that class was about to begin. All the students in Mrs. Garcia’s class filed into the classroom and quietly took their seats.

“Good morning boys and girls! I have exciting news today,” announced Mrs. Garcia. “We are going to have a new student joining our class today. She just moved here from Texas and I want you all to make her feel welcomed in our school. I’d like to introduce you to Arianna!”

Although she was very shy, Arianna tried to muster up the courage to say hello. “H… hhh… hi g-g-guys,” she stuttered through the words and had an awkward looking smile on her face. None of the kids in class said anything.

“This girl looks weird,” whispered Beth to Sandy.

“I don’t think she even knows how to talk. That was super cringy,” replied Sandy.

Her face instantly turned bright red at the embarrassment of not being able to utter the simple word “hi.” Arianna got the feeling that it wasn’t going to be easy making friends. Slowly, she dropped her head down and headed to her new seat in the back of the class.

After her introduction, Mrs. Garcia continued on with the rest of class. Quickly, she checked everyone’s homework and the class read a story in their Anthology Book*. The morning passed by fast and now it was recess time.

“Okay Arianna,” she told herself. “Let’s try to make some friends. You gotta put yourself out there! No more being shy. You’re going to step right up and start talking to people outside.”

Moments later, she walked outside and saw herself staring at a sea of kids playing games. Where would she begin? She needed to come up with a way to meet some friends.

* An Anthology Book is a textbook within US curriculum with a set of stories usually meant to teach a lesson (sharing is caring, slow and steady wins the race, etc.). It’s usually meant for elementary schoolers.
