I highly recommend getting up high on a boulder or getting the carno stuck somewhere while knocking it out. Unless you are a high level, you will not be able to outrun it.

Drop a large bear trap, stand behind it, aggro the carno with a ranged weapon, draw into trap and just backup and down it.

Probably your first canivore and it will make you feel like your the best of the best, or is that just me!?!?!
