They spawn right below the branch line of big redwoods. Stay away from/above them and they'll stay there. They don't seem to aggro on most wild dinos.

Watch out for big cats on the red wood trees. They knock you off your mount.

Think of a dire wolf, only more dire. This little fucker can be found almost everywhere on scorched and in redwoods for center and island.

Now not even chopping trees is safe if you see one run

One of these stupid cats was chasing some animals, but SUDDENLY, IT FOCUSED ON ME.... The stupid cat killed me. Thank god I had no mounts back then. I was new, and was finished taming a megaloceros. But I left it back in redwoods. Do not try to escape, accept your fate....
