Utility Tips

What is a pteranodon used for? pteranodon utility tips and strategies in ARK: Survival Ascended & Evolved.
I used mine to get obsidian from the mountains (he had 250 base Weight) but one morning I went there and got mobbed by 3 level 120 griffins and 1 level 50 scorpion and a low level giga I tried to save my Dino knowing that I could come back with my 15 sabers but NOPE. 1 like equals 10 rips for my pt :(
HARVESTING TIP! Tame a few of these. 3 at least if you don't want them to die by an argentavis. Upgrade their weight tolerance and use them to cargo wood and stone to the base you're building. I did this in singleplayer when I was making a base on the volcano. Be sure to make water jars, because you'll need them.
Despite the wiki saying Ptrandon cannot fit through a doorframe, they actually can fit through a open door while flying. Don’t use open doorframes to trap one unless you want a big chance of your Ptrandon escaping.
Source: I got my Ptrandon stuck in my house multiple times because he followed me through the doorframe.
These things can be way helpful for gathering wyvern eggs! Just get it to level 150+ putting all points into stamina/weight. Find where the wyvern eggs spawn and fly next to one and take it. But let the Ptera regain stamina first. Then fly out and kite any wyvern following between some trees and fly away with your prize!
Especially for newer players. Make sure you keep an eye on the stamina bar. You don't want it to run out while airborn, because your pteranodon will be forced to slowly descend to whatever area is directly beneath it, trying to find a flat surface that's not water to land on. Your stamina also won't regenerate until you land, meaning if you try to attack or pick up nothing with your pteranodon you will gain torpidity, but you would have to constantly attack or try picking up nothing for your pteranodon to fall asleep. If you are flying directly above the ocean, your pteranodon will stop right before it hits the water, meaning you won't be dismounted and then the pteranodon will give you free movement to fly anywhere else (probably to land), albeit at a very slow speed because you have no stamina. For example, if you are forced to land in the swamp the both of you will either be fine or 100% dead depending on if there's any creatures nearby. If you land near dilos or raptors you will probably be fine because the pteranodon can attack on land using its beak, and its attack speed paired with its knockback can easily make you chain attacks infinitely until they die, or your pteranodon falls asleep.(this is unlikely to happen unless you attack over 200 times with no stamina) The ability of the pteranodon to attack on land using its beak is only available on mobile, plus all versions of the game except one (you should probably be able to guess which version and which mobile i'm talking about)
On ark ume (or literally ANY platform besides old ark mobile) pternadons can attack by pecking similar to a tapejara while walking on land, which is good because if your pteranodon run out of stamina and you are forced to land near dilos or raptors you can actually fight back instead of being helpless on old ark mobile
Always keep dodo kibble to tame it. If you want to know the stat you need to add to it, try to reach ≈550 stamina first, then increase its weight to 220. The rest until you reach ≈ 950 stamina, then focus on weight until up to 350. The rest is up to you. I prefer increasing its speed and melee. But good luck you guys!
Advice, If your pteranadon flies into a small space (eg, any cave enterance designed for you to go through with no mount) Please either put it into a cryopod, or request it if you’re on mobile, I lost my best pteranadon because it flew into a cave enterance, Then got stuck, I tried to lead it out, But ark insta-killed it for clipping into a wall(?) Don’t make my mistake.
Pteranodon are incredible useful and can be a really good first flyer. Here is why:
-very easy creatures to tame. You just need a bunch of raw prime fish meat ( you can collect a lot by killing sabertooth salmons with sickle and collect their meat ) and 3 tranqs ( or 1 with a X-bow ). I should recommend taking 4 raw prime fish meat and 2 narcs also for the taming.
-They take quiet fast level up after taming and can fast get to 400-500 health.
-They do quiet a lot of damages ( I managed to kill a low level Rex with a lvl 5 pteranodon and a spike ).
- They are quiet fast and even tough not the best for collect and harvesting, they are incredibly useful for exploration of the map.
-When out of energy, their stamina reloads fast.
BUT: To not loose every ptera you tame, here are some tips:
-When they are out of stamina, they will land and you can’t really control where. So make sure there are not carnivors or any aggressive dinos around when you’re low on energy, or you might die very fast ( especially Rex, Allo, Spino and of course gigas ). Since they are flyers and quiet small, you can easily land on rocks that carnivores can’t access ( and you can regain stamina safely )
-Make sure to always have some food to feed them ( as they starve quiet fast when out of food ).
-When you want to tame a dino, land with them on a rock and set them on « passive » so they will be safe waiting for you and they will not attack and kill ( or get killed by ) the dino you’re trying to tame.
-When you land, make sure they will not fall ( especially when exploring the big mountains ), bcs they will take a lot of fall damages.
You will make these mistakes, even tough you think about it, you will make them. ( I lost 10 pteras ). So I should recommend you to tame 5,6 of them to have some more if you come to die with one of them.
By the way sorry if my English is not the best, I’m Belgian.
I hope this was useful 😀
