Rouke’s Story - Chapter 3: Truth Seekers

(Read the prologue and chapters 1 & 2 first)

Rouke needed answers. He was a smart wolf, after all, that’s why he was the alpha. He knew he couldn’t just depend on his pack’s strength to save them always, and he had to talk to Nosa’s pack and find out the most about the enemy before it could attack.

Rouke set out the next day to talk to Nosa’s pack, Lok at his side, and Jaz trailing slowly behind, his tail between his legs and his paws dragging with every step.

“Lighten up Jaz,” Lok smiled trying to cheer him up. “There’s still hope!”

“No there’s not!” Jaz grumbled, “You were there yesterday, and you saw the Argy carrying Nosa!”

Lok let out a soft growl, warning Jaz he was still a lower rank and to not raise his voice at the higher ranking wolves.

“She’s gone,” Rouke sighed, “Don’t give him false hope.”

The three got to the edge of Nosa’s packs territory and Rouke let out a howl to alert them of their arrival.

Not too long after, three solemn figures slunk out of the shadows, their heads lowered in grief.

“Greetings wolf kin.” The pack’s alpha, Hark sighed. “You must’ve heard of the tragedy the occurred last night.”

“Its true?” Jaz whined, “She’s really gone?”

“Yes,” the beta, Luno sighed, looking away.

“Was it wolf trappers?” Rouke asked, skipping to the point of their visit.

“It was huge- an Argy swooped from the sky! It just picked her up- something weird was on it’s back!” Lana, who wasn’t much older than a pup, and was the youngest in the pack, blurted.

Luno and Hark growled slightly, warning Lana to let them explain, but she ignored them and continued on.

“It was huge! It just took her and flew away- but it came back later and hovered overhead as if looking for-.”

Luno turned and snapped her jaws in front of Lana’s nose so that she backed away and went silent.

Her jaws still hung slightly open as it she would start speaking again any second.

“It had some thing weird on its back, and we do think it could have been a human…” Hark sighed looking up at the sky as if talking about the Argy would bring it and human back.

“Yes,” Luno said, “And it did come back and fly around overhead as if looking for the rest of us. I hope you don’t run into that terrible beast like us.”

“Thank you,” Rouke said, “We will need to head back to our territory soon.”

“Good luck on your journey back,” Hark nodded.

“Yes, and stay safe from that Argy,” Rouke nodded back before setting of with Jaz and Lok behind him.
