The Tribe of Shadows
Chapter II
Part II
I awoke next to a tree, my weapons and tools stacked by me, and I knew that what I saw, those speaking deinonychus, were real. I quickly grabbed my hatchet, and began to chop down a few of the trees nearby. I felt exhausted and lonely. I’d been out on my own for what felt like years, but I knew it was simply for a week. Swiftly gathering fiber from the many bushes nearby, I fashioned a bow. It had a draw weight of nearly eighty pounds, yet that was normal for me. I swung my hatchet at the rocks that surrounded my little clearing, and finally made a few arrows. There were only twenty of them, but they’d work. I began to him one of the old tunes that my family had known a long time ago, it was called Cabin in the Trees, it was a comfort song to me. I pulled the bow to full draw, aiming at a point of light wood on an oak tree nearby. And as I shot, the bowstring slammed into my wrist and stung like a whip. I could already see a large, red welt forming, but then I swiftly dashed over to a dodo, slashed off it’s head, and removed the feathers, I made myself a small campfire, and began to harden the thick pieces of the dodo’s hide over the flames. I made a cuff for my wrist, slipping it on. “Well, that’s better.” I said to the silent forest around me. It didn’t answer, as you may know of a forest, it can’t speak. I heard a rustle in the undergrowth behind me, a familiar rustle. I quickly turned and saw the people as they stepped out from their hiding spots. There were four of them, each armed with a pike or a sword. The leader spoke, “Join us and you shall not die.” They had a clearly French accent, and a haughty sound to it, as if they were a person that expected instant obedience all the time. “I said bow!” The first man said, the flicking his sword forward at my neck, attempting to slit it. Then the ring of my hatchet as it hit his blade. He fell backwards.
