You can weight them down by filling up their inventory with wood or stone or whatever. Doing so means they will not loose them when set to wander when your offline

While taming if they begin to starve they won't feed themselves so have to force feed to begin taming.

Food has a cool down so starve taming does seem to work well.

Torpor is a bitch. Pve, your best bet is to grapple them. Aim for the tail, below the shell

If you have more than one, keep them apart. They will mate and everyone of them will have a baby.

Update: Sorry to say that both babies did not survive. The last survivor actually took food from the Maewing twice but after 5 game days it stopped taking food and starved to death. So, I am at a loss. Sorry for the bad news.
