Encountering Tips

How do I kill a dragon? dragon encountering and battling strategies in ARK: Survival Ascended & Evolved.
How to slay a dragon? Follow these easy steps and you too can have a dragon’s head on your wall!
Step One: You gotta do some artifact hunting. The fight requires Cunning, Immune, Skylord, and Strong, coords are as follows: Cunning: 46.0, 88.2, BRING AN UNDERWATER TAME!!! Immune: 62.6, 37.2, you need a gas mask or you're dead. Skylord: 19.3, 19.0, no tames allowed for this one. Strong: 29.4, 32.0, this is the hardest cave in the game, your best bet is to bring a high level Yuty(at least level 135 when it was wild), make sure you have full flak and guns on you, this ain’t easy.
Step Two(ONLY APPLIES FOR BETA AND ALPHA): Apex Drops. These are pretty self-explanatory, just get up on a glorious murder machine(I recommend Carchas, except for the gigas), the drops are 5 Allo Brains, 5 Basilo Blubber, 1 Giga Heart, 5 Tuso Tentacles, 5 Rex Arms, and 5 Yuty Lungs, this is for Beta, for Alpha, double these, except Rex Arms, you need 15 for Alpha.
Step Three: Who to bring? This set of creatures will be able to take out Alpha Dragon decently well, bring 18 well leveled Theris, put ALL their points into health(stop at 20-25K), and put the rest into Melee, do not take a Theri below level 225 into this fight, and give them all at least 2 sweet veggie cakes. Your other 2 slots will be for support, bring a Yuty(level into health and stamina), none below level 200, DO NOT USE IT TO ATTACK, the Dragon does triple damage to carnivores with its bite. Your other slot can be another Theri(if you have ASE and hate mods for some reason), otherwise, this slot should be filled by a male Deinotherium, IT MUST BE MALE. Males give an attack buff, and females give defense, and it stacks with Yuty’s buff. They all need saddles with at least 60 armor points.
Step Four: The Fight. After yeeting the artifacts and apex drops at the Red Obelisk Terminal, you and your army are in the dragon’s arena, and it’s hot(make sure to bring something to negate the heat), and look to the sky, and hooway you found the dragon, now here’s the Strat: make sure you are on the Yuty or the Deinotherium, whistle your army to passive, and the dragon will summon hostile dimorphodons and pteranodons, use your mount to kill them. The dragon will shoot easy to dodge fireballs at you, make sure your army is following you, or they’re gonna get nuked. Once the dragon lands, let it come to you, the lava rivers are what ruin most fights. Once you don’t have to cross magma to get to the dragon, immediately whistle your army to attack my target. Your army will maul the dragon, and if you are on the Yuty, spam courage roar, if ur on Deinotherium, use the buff roar, and go maul the dragon, ENSURE YOUR YUTY IS ON PASSIVE AND AUTO COURAGE, if not it’ll run to bite the dragon’s knees, and the dragon will eat it. On the Deino, you can actually fight the dragon. The millisecond the dragon starts flying, whistle passive, so ur tames stay in this life. Watch out for the dragon’s fire breath, it takes away 20% of any tame’s hp. Rinse and repeat, and bam, the dragon is dead. Now you too can thrill the ladies with an authentic Dragon Head(at least until Tek Cave)
Dragon Hp:
Gamma: 432k
Beta: 864k
Alpha: 1.26M
Hope this helps! -Scorchfire
I know everyone uses tickle chickens but if you have gen 2 i recommend VERY good shadowmanes i used them with a very good yuty and absolutely destroyed the dragon because if you have a male and a ton of females the mate and pack boost plus the shadowmanes buff roar and yuty roar mine were dealing around 2.5k dmg a hit!
whack it
Deinons are the ultimate dragon fighters because of their bleed and their ability to latch onto it. I was so impressed that my Deinon is now named "Dargon" in honor of my discovery...

Just take your coordinates so you can get your stuff back after you INEVITABLY die. :)
Running this one back, because I beat it again. July 2nd 2025, here’s how I beat the dragon on alpha single player settings. Also, it was on Evolved. Not Ascended.
19 theris, 1 yuty. My yuty took almost no damage, but it had 50k health, 3k stam and about 950% melee. All primitive saddles excluding one, which was a 230 theri saddle. My theris had 21.8k health and 1840% melee with 1-3 cakes. 4 theris died, some took almost no damage, some were left on about 4-7k health.
I spent about 40 in game days running the swamp cave for a theri blueprint, and all I got was that one saddle. So I ran it with primitive.
For the caves, I used a bary with 10k health and 1400% melee not imprinted for the swamp cave, 2 imprinted rexes 35k health and 1300% melee for the hard ice cave, a damn good shotgun for the small ice cave, and a 50k health 1200% melee tuso for the hard water cave.
When I loaded into the arena, I had already couraged the theris as you should. I whistled them to the open area, while I stayed on my yuty and shot at the dragon as it flew. It shot a fireball at me, so I moved with my yuty as that damages the rider. Then, it landed quite early. It didn’t even summon its pteras or dimorphs. The dragon landed by the monuments, and I let it walk over to me. It was locked onto my yuty which was terrifying, and it landed one fire attack on it which did about 10k damage alone. Fire damage is insane on the dragon. My theris managed to surround it through some whistling to attack, and then moving to either side before whistling attack again.
It was a scary fight, and I had to be slightly more on top of coursing than I actually was, but I managed it. I was shooting with a shotgun and rifle periodically but I hardly did anything. Should’ve focused on couraging more.
I hope I was able to help you with my second experience. If you want to know what I’d prefer to do better, more veggie cakes probably. 4 each. And I chose to go in with primitive saddles, but if you can, it’s much better to get a better saddle blueprint and crafting skill them all.
Good luck.
16 Rex 2 pigs and yuty hard boss fight on rag is so easy when u get the 10 riders 1 guy on a pig with other following make sure it's full food and has food in inventory... Rex's must be 30k health and 600+ attack JM saddles or better is advised 1 yuty rider high standards to keep all boosted .. everyone else on Rex . Yeah b make sure pigs DO NOT Let anyone else whistle them pigs for healing not attacking
Use 20 decent Rex’s, a pig or two, and rocket launchers.
Take a deinonychus with 10k+ health, 600+ Melee, 80+ saddle and good stamina for a easy win
I just used all megatheriums on all the bosses and it went smooth
! ! DO NOT FIGHT THE DRAGON WITH CARNIVORES ! ! The dragon does extra damage to carnivore dinosaurs, it's best to take a bunch of Therizinosaurs
Deinonychus are the best Dinos to kill the Dragon Gamma thru Alpha as he will never even touch them. Bring a Yuty and Med Brews and it should be over quick
Boys the new method is to have 5 theriz atleast 3 manas and 2 megaloceros (Male) with 90 plus armor saddles. 20-25 cakes on all the herbivores. One megalocero goes under the dragon, the other one is for backup and the megalocero will keep the dragon distracted and will barely take any dmg. Both megalocero riders along with the theri riders have above 240 dmg pumps and the Mana riders just use their freeze attack. Everyone should have 2 sets of flak atleast. Calien soup. Btw you can shoot the dragon while on the back of the megaloceros. We had 6-7k hp on the megaloceros and put points in some weight. When the megaloceros has the dragon semi-trapped the theri riders can jump off and pump. Sometimes the megalocero rider will have the dimorphodons on it so run up to it even if it has the dragon on it you can kill them with the theri. GL Jan 2019 method I used.
There is a simple way to defeat the dragon , simply tame megalosaurs and breed them till u have good attack and stamina , wait until the day is near ending then attempt the raid with 1 yutyrannus and 19 megalosaurs , while fighting it must be night , due to an special effect of megalosaur they cant be noticed during night , so the dragon will only aggro at the yuty youre riding , the only tricky thing is after the dragon lands and want to come after you , you should let megalosaurs come between you and the dragon , dragon will get stuck on megalosaurs while the aggro is towards you so it wont attack megalosaurs and only trys to get to you , although you should deal with the minions yourself and be wary of the lava flowing under your feet ( megalosaurs might go in the lava and kill themselves )
Good luck with your dragon slaying 🐉
BEWARE! This boss does a lot of DPS, And Damage over time. I did him on Alpha with my 40k health, 1k melee, Therizinos. I brought 17 of them with a Yuty and a Pig I thought I was prepared but we barely won, only the Yuty survived and 8 of the Therizinos lived and they barely had 2k health. If you think you are prepared, prepare more. It’s a miracle I won.
Run run as fast as you can stay as far away from this jerk as possible when it uses the fire
Apparently, there’s some glitch that makes the boss aggro on you instead of your tames, so if your battle creatures block the dragon so it can’t get to you, they could attack it without getting too hurt!
Watch some youtube videos before going in. Got one shotted by the dragon's fireball. Ironically, my xbox glitched about 10 minutes after returing to grab my argy at red ob, completely reset to right before I entered 😂🙌🏻 Got my second chance at redemption and beat it. Just make sure you understand the mechanics of the fight and don't get stuck in all of your dinos. I used 19 theris and 1 yuty.
