Ultimus Chapter Twenty-Eight: Secrets
Erica and the others wandered their way through the Wasteland that once was Sanctuaryâs East outer city. But now was the outer edge of the Sulphur Field. Most of the group had been in a single-file line, with Freya in the back guarding, then Jonathan, herself, Paul, and Sylas and Andrew leading the group. Andrew and Sylas had been talking up a storm since they left. She really saw them growing into good friends since they met.
Erica noticed that Paul kept staring off toward the North. He seemed to be looking at the building ahead to their right, which was unusually shaped. Yet it seemed eerily familiar. She didnât know why though. Then in the next moment, she heard Paul ask.
âAndrew, do ya know what that building is over there?â Andrew looked over at him to see what he was talking about. He then looked at the building and shook his head.
âAfraid I donât, I donât know how to access it. Iâve passed it so many times on my way to the Barracks wondering whatâs in there.â Andrew said, Erica raised an eyebrow.
âHold on, why do you go to the Barracks?â She asked.
âThe URE started using their Barracks as a storage facility sometime after the war. Iâve been looting it for some time now, picking over what I can, only to find out recently that thereâs like 12 floors for stuff, and I was only in museum artifacts and library materials.â Andrew said, Erica nodded. She didnât know they started using it as a storage site. But it made sense, it survived this apocalypse and the war before that. It would survive anything.
âAre there books in this base?â Paul asked, Andrew nodded.
âLoads, Iâve read stuff from survival guides to history books in there. The whole first level I know is books, but there might be more.â Andrew said, Paul nodded in interest before they continued onward.
They traveled against a cliff on the edge of the Sulfur Field for some time, Erica looked to her left out towards the Sulfur Fields. She could see Delta Tower from their position. The tip of its tower poked out of the hill where Delta Tower was built. It was barely visible from the haze of the fields around it. She sighed to herself. She thought when she was younger, that the Earth couldnât get worse than it once was⌠guess she was wrong. She had hope in this work, in this chance of saving Earth. It was all she had hope in anymore, this and that they could bring it to fruition. That was all the hope she had left anymore. There was a time she had hope in so many many things, almost everything. So much hope in her that it grew brightly in her. But that hope died with her trust in people.
They reached a small river that came from the strange structure. She could hear Sylasâs voice rise as he tried to explain a showâs story to Andrew as they crossed. Andrewâs horse got frantic as the water got into the water. Andrew didnât know what to do. Erica rolled her eyes.
âAndrew, get off the horse and swim along it.â She yelled, Andrew nodded. He got off his horse and walked him into the water. Sylas was already on the other side with Phil and his horse Seabiscuit. They all watched as Andrew made the swim with Knight Sky across the water successfully. Paul smiled happily, probably because it was proving the point that Andrew was capable of standing with the others. All Erica did was sigh. It was Paulâs turn next to cross, but Paul stopped at the bank and moved out of the walking path of the others behind him.
âProbably best ta let yaâll cross first. Just so that way thereâs always someone on both sides able ta make sure that the others make it across safely.â He said, Erica side-eyed him. She wasnât sure what he was up to, he was a bad liar and he was definitely lying. But she decided to play along and obliged. She and Ajax began to cross as the water got too deep for Ajax, so she dismounted and swam alongside him to lighten the load. They swam across and successfully made it over the other side of the river. Ajax shook himself off before looking at Erica. He sneezed in disapproval and then walked over onto the shore. Erica gasped.
âItâs not my fault we had to go through the river.â She said to Ajax, Sylas kinda looked at her.
âSince when did you talk to your animals like their people?â Sylas asked, Erica looked at him in a way like a younger sister.
âWhen did you?â She said in a light-hearted tone. Sylas looked away with a smirk.
âTouchĂŠ.â
They watched as Jonathan crossed over with his Equus, then Freya rode Angrboda across. Erica looked back over the river at Paul. He looked at them, then looked over in the direction of the building.
âI need ta go ta that barracks.â Paul yelled over the river. Erica gave him a confused expression.
âWhat, why?â
âI need ta see if I can find some medical books, itâa be a great advantage for me ta know what advanced medicines are recommended when dealing with injuries and or illnesses now. Especially if I canât get the berries I need ta make medical brews.ââ he shouted, âIâll be back here in a couple of hours, meet me here when I come back. Iâm looking at you and Freya both Erica ta keep things in check while Iâm gone.â He continued. Erica growled, then sighed.
âAlright,â she yelled back. Paul turned away and began to follow the river.
âWait!!â Sylas shouted, Paul stopped and looked back.
âWhatâs goinâ on lad?â Paul shouted,
âIâm coming too!â Sylas shouted as he dug through one of his bags and threw some flares to Jonathan. Then he had Phil jump back in the water and swim over to Paul.
âSylas!! What are you doing?â Erica yelled,
âI just said, Iâm going with Paul to the barracks. He shouldnât be going alone.â Sylas shouted.
âShouldn't someone else go then? Andrew maybe? He knows the way to the barracks.â Erica shouted, Andrew shook his head.
âItâs pretty easy to get there, all they need to do is follow the river and theyâll see it, and easily find their way to the path of the barracks.â Andrew said, Erica scowled. She didnât want to be left with him and she knew that she would get stuck with him out of the three.
âCanât Freya go? Give him the big muscle?â
âNo lass, thatâd be just foolish for everyone. Sylas is right on the matter. He is probably the best option. He has enough modern know-how ta tell me what is considered good and has enough muscle to protect with Phil accompanying him.â Paul shouted back, and this sealed it for Erica to be stuck with Andrew.
âWeâll be back soon!!â Sylas yelled before they began to walk away following the river. Erica watched for a moment before turning around to see Andrew, Jonathan, and Freya looking at her. All three stood there wondering what they were gonna do now. She sighed.
âWell, this is going to be funâŚâ
~
Paul and Sylas followed the river up into the underside of the strange building that was suspended far above the ground. Paul for some reason had a strange feeling about this building. He wasnât sure why. But as they were under the building. They came across their first few hostiles. Several Dilos and Raptors and even a few flying dinosaurs all corrupted Element as Erica said about that one from before. They were able to deal with these smaller creatures, but they needed to be careful.
As they exited beneath the building, they were able to spot the military bunker, it was only about a mile or so away now. But they saw even more of these corrupted creatures around the basin they were in, some being Spinos, some being those strange Rhino Giraffes, others being Rexes, and other animals too. Though all of these were either too far away or fighting others of their same species but those that were not corrupted. It was unnatural, they fought to kill and not like the fights Jonathan would show Paul of creatures fighting their own kind on the Arks. Most of those fights would be mild, and very seldom end in them killing one another. This was brutal and meant to kill. It wasnât right. Sylas kept saying this was normal for âzombiesâ. Paul wasnât quite sure what that was, but he knew that it had to refer to this type of violent and aggressive behavior in these animals.
They continued on, without making much of a scene to grab the attention of these other creatures. They could see the path to the bunker easily now. And they swiftly moved across the basin to the path to the barracks. Something that was surprisingly easy with most of the creatures distracted by other creatures in the territory of these monsters. They made their way through the paths to the barracks finally. Paul and Sylas entered the building.
âDamn, this place is huge!â Sylas said,
âAye, it is.â Paul said, Sylas and Paul dismounted and began to investigate the area around. Paul looked and saw Sylas grazing his hands against the old military vehicles.
âGeez, these jets are probably worth quite a lot. They still look in decent shape too.â
âAye, they do donât they? But it would take too long to dig the lot of them out. Letâs just find this place, get what we came for, and get back to the others.â And after a bit of searching, they finally found the door that mustâve led to the storage site.
âOh gosh, what is that smell?â Sylas asked as they walked through the dark hall. Paul could smell it too, it reeked of the smell of decay.
âI donât know. Pull out a few glow sticks so we can find the light switch if ya can lad.â Paul asked, which Sylas agreed to. He pulled out a few glow sticks, broke two, and threw one ahead of them while he held the other. The hall seems to go on just about ten feet more.
As they left the hall, the stench became more foul, causing Sylas to gag and dry heave, Paul started coughing and hacking too. The two of them began searching for any switches near the walls. Sylas gave Paul a glow stick and they quickly found it on the wall to their right. Paul flipped the switch and saw the larger complex they were in. And as much as they were in awe of all the storage crates, they had a hard time expressing it as they took shallow breaths.
âGet in and get out, this is by no means a good place to be in for too long.â Paul said as he started walking up to the crates. He pulled out a hatchet and started breaking into the crates. Sylas started doing the same only with a pickaxe instead.
âHow could Andrew bear this stench? Itâs horrible!!â Sylas said as he broke a crate open and found some action-adventure novels.
âI donât know Sylas, the lad was wearing a type of strange mask when we first met him. Maybe it kept the stench out of his mouth and nostrils.â Paul stated as he broke open one of the crates. His eyes widened for a moment seeing the books inside it. Books that werenât needed, but books that were wanted. So many different fictional tales that had entertained him in his youth. Others that guided him through hardship, and ultimately made him a better man. He shook his head in refusal though. He needed to stay on target and find the medical books he was looking for, then they would be on their way back to meet up with the group.
âLetâs move a wee bit faster as we go thr-.â Paul paused, he began to hear a dull chirping in the background. He started walking and following the noise, which came from down one of the hallways. Revealing a swarm of compys picking apart a rotting corpse of a raptor. The smell was horrendous, and blood was everywhere. Paul was beginning to gag, he took a few steps back.
âSylas, I found the culprit of the smell.â Paul shouted, but he saw Sylas on the other side of the room near the wall, hurling in a corner, Paul could only imagine that Sylas had come across another corpse. Sylas looked up and stared over in Paul's direction.
âI think I found one too.â Paul had to wonder why there were two corpses. He walked passed the corpse, the compys started defensively protecting the corpse before scampering off for the time being. Paul noticed as he walked by that the head of the animal was completely disfigured, it looked like it had been blown up by something⌠or someone.
He looked forward only to seeing some damaged crates, and contents from said crates as though something had hit or blown them up like the raptor behind him. Paul also noticed a few shotgun shells scattered across the floor, another corpse of a raptor, but this one had a bite mark on its neck from an animal, and a pool of dried blood behind the corpse. He investigated this dried pool, and saw short hair or fur covering the blood pool, he wasnât sure what it exactly was. There was enough blood to declare that whatever it was was dead, but with no body or no trace of a corpse. It simply disappeared, or mightâve been taken. He then noticed a human boot print and smearing in the blood.
âWhat happened here?â He thought to himself. Andrew was apparently the only human here, so what was all of this? Why did he get so brutal with these raptors, and what was injuredâ or died in this pool of blood? Paul shook his head, he had to focus. There was a time to focus on this and ask Andrew about all of this. Right now he needed to get these medical booksâŚ
Some time passed as they searched for these books, but as of yet they havenât found any. All they found were classic novels, historical and religious texts, and popular culture magazines and books⌠but no medical books. Paul sat on a broken crate with dozens of books in front of him. He was also getting frustrated, not just because he hadnât found the books he wanted, but because he had seen a lot of really good books while searching. Twain, Lewis, and even some of the volumes of Tolkienâs works that havenât been released yet, at least for him. And so many from his future. But he hadnât found a single medical book. All of these books interested him so much, but if he returned without those medical books and a ton of entertainment to read. Heâd probably get looked down upon by the others. So unless he has medical books, he canât take any other books. His mind also kept wandering about what happened with these corpses and Andrew. They had been in the room long enough that the smell wasnât bothering them anymore. The compys went back to eating the corpses but were still slightly on edge with Paul and Sylas being nearby.
âPaul!! I found some!!â Sylas shouted, Paul immediately got up and stood there for a moment.
âWhere ya be Sylas?â Paul shouted back,
âUh, I think four or five isles from the isle you're in.â Paul walked around the other way to avoid the corpses and found Sylas where he said, four isles on the other side of him. He was squatting down next to a crate he broke into investigating the books. Paul ran over and noticed the name on the crate being called âThe URE War and Military History Museumâ
âWhatâd ya find Sylas?â
âI found a few military manuals and some medic textbooks on medical procedures in the field. Would these work or?â
âWhat year are they lad? This will make the most noticeable difference. A medical journal from 1774 wonât help us at all, but a medical journal from your time or Ericaâs and Andrewâs time would help us the most. So what are they?â Paul asked, Sylas flipped through the pages of each of the books he had.
âWell, this one manual says 2017, so about ten years before I was born⌠this other is from 2076 so that oneâs good⌠and, the textbook is from 2057 so they're all good. Then the rest, seem to be for an event called the Tek Wars. And all of them English, I found a few books with squiggle texts, so those werenât helpful.â Sylas said, Paul nodded.
âThen let's take them all, they all seem ta be good as long as theyâre in the timeframe I need them ta be in. And weâre out of time for searchinâ anymore.â Paul said as he began to walk away to find the exit, until he realized that Sylas wasnât following. He stopped and looked back as he saw Sylas bent over searching through the books. Paul turned and stood there staring at Sylas.
âWhatâre doinâ Sylas? We have ta go.â Paul said, Sylas stood up straight and looked straight at Paul, then scratched the back of his head.
âI- uh⌠I saw a couple of graphic novels I wanted to grab before I go.â Sylas said,
âBut we need ta get goinâ Sylas.â
âI know, and we will, just as soon as I find these books I set awayâŚ.â Sylas said, Paul groaned as he walked away. Knowing Sylasâs organizational skills, he probably lost them and be looking for a half hour longer. Then as Paul got to the hallway, Paul stopped, a sort of evil grin came on his face.
âWell, if Sylas is grabbing unnecessary books, why canât I?â He thought, he knew exactly which books he wanted, and where he left them. He would simply grab them, put them in Graceâs saddle bags, and then come back to help Sylas. And with two hands looking for his, they should be able to leave in no time. But first Paul wanted to grab those other books. So he turned around and he immediately went to find those books he had wanted earlier.
So I was minding my own buisness, feeding my family of raptors when I realized my first and favorite raptor, Littleclaw, was gone. Ive had a cnidaria kill a carno before, so I was pretty protective and always checked the waters first. I put my base on an island guarded with spinos. I flew around the island with my ptera and sure enough there he was. He was surrounded by them and I quickly got off my ptera, stood o the edge of the grass and pulled my bow out. I took the m all out with about twenty arrows, and put him on follow. I got him to the infirmary (AKA the hatching/breeding/birthing place) and checked his health. Good, he still had most of his health, I thought. I fed him plenty of kibble and put my rex to protect the infirmary. Littleclaw made it, and he bred plenty of baby raptors with his mate, Simmerscale. I gladly retired him and now he sits in the deepest part of the base, protected with his mate beside him.
