“Anddd that’s the last log done,” Ruby sighed in relief, clapping dust off her hands. The raft was finished. What was once a thick platform of logs tied together poorly with fiber had turned into something a bit more complete. The raft looked sturdy enough to fit everyone two times over. A makeshift lever made of wood was near the front of the raft for steering the vessel. There was even a sail so the wind could drift them in the direction they wished to go.
“It looks great, Ruby. You did good on it,” Nova complimented her.
“Thanks,” Ruby said with a blush.
Bria stepped onto the sturdy raft, testing her balance. She seemed to walk on it just as easily as the sandy beaches. “Not bad, are we ready to sail?”
“Y–yeah. Let’s go,” Neddy said.
The rest of the group docked the raft. Bria crouched down and pulled the lever. The sail opened up and the raft began to drift away from the beach and down the coastline. Ruby looked around nervously. She started putting together another bow.
“You alright?” Neddy asked, noticing her unease. She nodded slowly.
“Yeah…” Ruby put an arrow on the string of her bow, her eyes scanning the waters again. “Just looking out for us.”
“You think there’s dinosaurs in the water?” Nova questioned, slightly worried.
“Marine reptiles,” Ruby corrected her. “But it’s a possibility, if there’s dinosaurs on land and air, then there’s probably dinosaurs in the water?”
Bria turned her head to listen into the conversation.
“I do not think we will have trouble with those creatures. He told me they don’t attack rafts, except for… well… I don’t think we’ll run into that.”
Borealis raised his eyebrow. He was sitting on the ground criss-cross-apple-sauce with his back facing the others. “How do you know that?”
“If a shark finds us though, it won’t attack us,” Nova said confidently. “They don’t really attack people, much less boats.”
“If it’s a super shark though I won’t be so sure.” Neddy squirmed.
“Let’s just not jinx it, okay?” Bria sighed. “Conversations like these always segue into some high-speed chase. I’d prefer to avoid it. I don’t do well in the water anyway.”
“Agreed. We should refrain from it, if I may give my opinion,” Borealis interjected. Ruby shot a look at him. Borealis looked away, casting his gaze back at the endless ocean.

“This is boring,” Nova thought as she stared off at the disappearing beaches.
The group had traveled along the coastline for the past half-hour already, and nearly nothing had happened since then. Nova had considered talking with Ruby, but she was busy chatting with Neddy about the sealife, dipping their legs in the water.
“Oooh, look! An Ichthyosaurus! There’s a whole pack of them!” Neddy said, pointing at a school of dolphin-like creatures swimming by. Their eyes pierced the raft momentarily before going about their merry way. A smile seemed to cross Ruby’s face.
“I didn’t know you knew so much about dinosaurs. I thought I was the only one.”
“Hah, seriously? You didn’t take one look at me and thought– ‘Huh. This nerd seems like a bit of a nerd. I bet he’s the type of guy to be obsessed with dinosaurs and space and all sorts of other nerdy stuff.’”
“To be honest, I didn’t think you were the nerd type when I first met you.”
“Yeah. They definitely dig each other,” Nova thought obliviously. Then she considered talking with Borealis.
“Borealis…” Nova thought desperately. “Nah. I’ve already had my fun with him for now. Gotta let it sit.”
So then she considered talking to Bria.
“Hmm…” Nova had almost forgotten about her. She definitely seemed like the mysterious, brooding type with secrets that nobody but her knew about. Especially considering her get-up. She was stylish, but it didn’t make much sense considering the graduation robes they had to wear to the ceremony the night before they were taken to the Island. She wondered…
Thunk. Thunk. Thunk. Bria’s eyes darted to Nova.
“Need anything?”
“Mmm, I wouldn’t say I need anything. I just wanted to see… what’s in your pocket?”
“What’s in my pocket?” Bria repeated. “Nothing. Why do you want to know what’s in my pocket?”
“I don’t know. I thought you were fiddling with something earlier. Like, a fidget, you know?”
“Fidgets?” Bria’s eyes lit up. “Oh, I love fidgets. I actually have one right now.”
She reached into one of her pockets and pulled out a strange cube. Grooves ran along the metal surface that allowed the cube to fold outwards and inwards. Nova rubbed her eyes at the sight of the toy.
“Look.” Bria smiled. Click! The cube flipped into a rectangular prism. She flicked it again, and it turned back into a cube. She continued doing this for the next minute. Nova buried her head in her hands.
“Pretty cool right?” Bria said.
“Yeah…”
“Wanna give it a try?”
“No thanks,” Nova said, holding her palm out to stop her. Bria shrugged.
“Your loss. Is that all?”
“You know what?” Nova said, pacing back and forth. “How about we gossip. You know how, right? You seem like a good gossiper.”
“Oh, you want to know about the tea?” Bria smirked.
“Mhm, girl. Let’s trade. I’ll start,” Nova continued. “I’m sure you know about the cheer captain of our school. Kaitlyn?”
Bria nodded along repeatedly.
“Well… it turns out she’s a pretty avid gamer. Isn’t that crazy? Talk about an oxymoron.”
Bria blinked repeatedly. “That’s… good for her?”
Nova groaned. “Do you even know who Kaitlyn is? Personally?”
“Noooo?”
“Gosh, you’re hopeless. Okay, okay fine. Why don’t you hit me with your tea then?”
“Sure. I got you,” Bria said. She reached into one of her robe pockets and pulled out a packet of tea. Nova looked like she was ready to blow.
“Are you messing with me right now?”
“You asked for tea. I got you tea.”
“No! Tea, like drama tea! That’s what I mean!” Nova grumbled something to herself.
“Hmm. Well, in our Coalition, one of the members Celeste is a vegetarian.”
“Who is that? And that’s not even drama! I’m talking about, like, crushes? Does anyone you know have a crush on someone? Do you have a crush on anyone right now?” Nova added to throw Bria off. Bria scratched the back of her head.
“Uh. No?”
“Ugh! Forget it,” Nova muttered, kicking at the raft and storming off to the corner of the raft.
When Bria turned to face the waters again, her face darkened. She reached back into her pocket, taking out something small and metallic. A gold heart locket attached to a chain. She ran her thumb along the grooves. There was a set of initials engraved on it.
“I haven’t forgotten my duty, yet.” Just then, Twinkle let out a warning chirp.
BURRRRRRRRP! A large bellow echoed from the waters. Bria’s grip on the lever tightened. Borealis’ head perked up.
“What was that?”
He stood up. Neddy let out a shriek, pulling his feet out of the water along with Ruby. There was a large shadow deep within headed toward them. Something big.
