Megas, Chapter 2

Alexander wanted to liberate Greek city states in Persia, but he had little success as some liked living in Persia. He needed a victory, Macedon’s economy was destroying itself. Persian Satraps were discussing how to deal with Alexander, Memnon of Rhodes, a Greek, knew that a scorched earth strategy could kill the campaign early, but the Satraps decided to attack Alexander.

By the Granicus the Persians and Macedonians stood off, the banks were muddy, which would mess up Macedon’s army with the slight advantage the Macedonians. Memnon’s mercenaries would help, but they hoped the cavalry could make infantry a problem they could ignore. Alexander decided to cross the river.

Alexander took the right flank, a man named Parmenion took the left

Arrows flew from Persian bows, but the Macedonian cavalry was very helpful, they fought in all directions. Alexander’s Trojan shield took hits and his armor attracted attention. Things were very crazy, Alexander caught a spear thrown at him with a shield, then went off to attack the man who threw it, the man was knocked off his horse after a brief tussle, another Persian attacked and cut into Alexander’s scalp through his helmet, he killed the attack, a third Persian came by, Alexander’s bodyguard, Cleitus the Black, saved him. The Macedonians still were crossing the river, they pushed the Persian Cavalry back, soon they fought Greek mercenaries and Persians, Alexander’s near death experiences continued, but the outcome was easy to see, Macedon won. All the mercenaries were dead or captured, 2500 Persian cavalry were killed, Macedonian losses were even less, 150 perhaps. But not much money, Macedon needed money, he enslaved the mercenaries and sent them to the mines, but this wasn’t popular, he was trying to liberate Greeks after all. The Granicus bought Alexander time, he needed a big city though, the west was undefended, Persia was open, Darius III ordered an army to assemble to meat Alexander personally.

Chosen by God Chapter 2

After the death of Charlemagne, and his son Louis the Pious, the Frankish kingdom was split into three parts

East Francia, becoming the Kingdom of Germany

West Francia, becoming the Kingdom of France,

And Middle Francia, becoming a punching bag.

The coronation of Otto I as king of east Francia, had resurrected the title of Roman Emperor. The old Salic law of the Frankish kingdom, responsible for tearing the mighty empire apart, had since been cast out in favor of an elected monarch. Yet, Otto’s father named his son heir apparent without consulting the electors, later after bloody conflict Otto’s reign was secured and the German king looked hungrily towards the kingdom of Italy, ripe for subjugation, he allowed Berengar II to become king of Italy if he swore fealty to Otto. Berengar was resentful of the fact he was a vassal to the king and when Otto went to Germany Berengar saw the opportunity and laid siege to Rome. Pope John XII cried out for aid to Otto. Otto saw a chance to demonstrate his loyalty to the church and rushed over defeating Berengar. When he entered Rome Otto met with John XII and took an oath to protect the church against all adversaries. The pope having secured a second Charlemagne could rest easy for now, and for Otto’s service, he was crowned, Imperator Romanorum.

The Frankish king Charlemagne had a good standing with the pope, this good standing would earn him the title Imperator Romanorum

You see, the pope at this time was Leo III and he was low class with no friends in high places, people sought to “persuade” him t resign. After hired thugs nearly tore his eyes and tongue out he fled Rome and went to Charlemagne for protection. He later returned to Rome under Frankish guard. For Charlemagne’s service the pope crowned him Emperor of the Romans, however, this was controversial to say the least as another monarch was already emperor of the Romans, you see, Empress Irene led the Byzantine empire, an eastern descendant of the Roman Empire formed after the Western Roman Empire fell to barbarian invasions, already held the title Emperor of Romans as the byzantines saw themselves as the same political entity since the founding of Rome, now, ultimately due to the fact that even though previously the church had endorsed this and maintained that the Emperor in Constantinople was the rightful ruler of all former Roman lands. But since the church was a patriarchal organization it couldn’t be seen supporting the claims of a woman to be Roman Empress.

The Franks were a tribe who had occupied Gaul, at the Battle of Tours the Franks crushed the Umayyads, so now, the stage was set, for Frankish war and what would ultimately become….the Holy Roman Empire.
