Prologue

Icy blackness enveloped me, pulling me deeper and deeper into the cold mist that surrounded me. My body froze, my flesh like ice, there was nothing but the blackness. I began to go numb, it spread out from my heart until I could feel nothing. I relaxed, at peace with what I had done, I had slain that impish dwarf of a king. My only regret was getting stabbed in the chest, my heart sliced in two, it's beating halted forever.

Suddenly I didn't feel cold anymore. "This is it," I tried to say, "the end." But my frozen mouth wouldn't move. Light appeared in the distance, with the flickering quality of... Fire? Why is there fire in my death-sleep.

"No. I cannot permit us to die." A familiar voice said, "We will rise again."

This perplexed me, who was that, I can't remember, I thought. Soon I could feel again, the front of my body was pressed up against a hard surface, it felt like... Bricks? Slowly, I regained consciousness, the darkness softening to a dull gray.

Chapter 1

Jacob Halls was almost done with the ritual, the eleven toddlers fast asleep in the middle of the pentagram. Jacob was tall, with sandy hair, cold, black eyes, and tan skin. He chanted the last few bars of the ritual, but one child woke up, and started crying. Jacob fumbled the last few words, he cringed, waiting for the punishment of messing up the chant. A wave of forced slammed him against the wall, knocking him out.

Crying woke him up, eleven high voices screaming in pain. Jacob looked up, the children were fine, except that they were screaming. Jacob stood up and inspected them, each of the eleven children had a different mark burned into their chest, the first one who woke had a more intricate mark. Already the marks were fading.

Jacob looked through the dark magic book, searching for the ritual he accidentally cast. He found it, it was exactly the same as the ritual he had meant to cast but the end of the chant was slightly different. The ritual fused the soul of the one in the center of the pentagram with a fragment of a demon. The spell Jacob meant to cast required children as sacrifices, one child for domination over one of the 12 domains of magic. Jacob decided to train these children in combat, to be his personal guard.

"That's 11 villages, send in a scout crew, and make sure they have cameras transmitting a live feed, I want to see if they disappear like the others."

"Yes, sir, right on to it now."

*Sounds of communications being opened.* "The lieutenant wants a scout team sent to sector four, subsection 3, make sure to give them equipment for live video and audio."

"Yes, sir, sending scout team."

"Pause recording"

*Cuts to an hour later, when the camera feed opens*

"Nothing happened except all the people are gone, every house, store, and gas station is untouched except that everyone is gone, no blood, or signs of a struggle or anything, sir"

"What's wrong with the video feed, it keeps cutting to static for short periods."

"We don't know, sir, everything is fine here, there are n-" *terrified gasps*

"What happened to the video!"

*Filled with dread* "the cameraman is gone, sir."

*Screaming* "WHAT THE **** IS THA-" *distinct sound of a body being torn in half, various screams and sounds of dying*

*A new voice says* "That was... boring." *Audio feed cuts out*

"End recording."
