There is actually a really good trap to get these guys- you need 1 rare flower, 1 stone foundation, 2 stone walls, 3 stone double door frames, and 2 stone stairs. First, you place the foundation. Next, you place one double doorframe on one side. On the opposite side, you place 2 of the door frames, on top of eachother. You place the walls on the sides that don't have anything on them, add stairs to the lower double doorframe part leading into the trap, make sure the maewing is away from other creatures, eat the flower, run through the trap, staring at the stairs, walk out of the other side, and the maewing is trapped!
