The Riddles of the Phoenixes Series
Chapter twenty one: Arguments.
*DING DONG!!!!* *DING DONG!!!!!!* A bell rang loudly. On and on and on and on and on and on. Rowan was in darkness. She could see absolutely nothing. A smothering darkness choked her and she clawed and fought to get out of wherever she was. *DING DONG!!!!* *DING DONG!!!!* she clutches both sides of her, trying to keep the bells from making her go deaf.
“Rowan.” A voice called. Rowan spun to see her mother, her eyes dark with disappointment. “You failed. Such a disappointment. Ugh disgrace. I thought you wouldn’t let me and your father down.” Her mother said.
“Mother please. I’m not a disappointment. Please! Let me try again!” Rowan pleaded. Her mother shook her head slowly. “Disappointment.” She hissed. Rowan stepped forward, coughing vigorously, choking on the smokey fog. “Disgrace.”
“Mother please!”
Rowan reached for her mother but she’s vanished into midair. Tears gathered at the edges of Rowan’s eyes. “Please! Mother come back! I’ll do better! I promise!”
“YOU’RE TOO LATE. YOUR FATE IS SEALED. SEALED IN STONE.” A voice growled.
Rowan squirmed in panic, trying to get out.
She caught sight of someone briefly. A woman with dark red hair that fell to her shoulders and white eyes. “Rowan..” The woman whispered, her face contorted in pain. She held out a hand toward Rowan. Rowan reached for it. Almost there. And then she grabbed it.
But she stopped. Something had grabbed Rowan’s ankle and was pulling her away from the woman. And then more hands grasped Rowan pulling her down, choking her. “Please help me..” She choked. But the woman was gone.
*DING DONG!!!!* *DING DONG!!!!* *DING DONG!!!!!* “SEALED IN STONE SEALED IN STONE SEALED IN STONE SEALED IN STONE SEALED IN STONE SEALED IN STONE—”

Rowan awoke to someone shaking her. She sat up gasping. She looked at the person who’d woken her up. It was Kannon. Rowan rubbed her eyes and blinked at him, scowling. “Why did you wake me up?” She snapped.
Kannon made a few hand signals. Rowan stared at him blankly. “I don’t speak sign language dummy.”
Kannon’s head lowered and he shrugged. He pointed toward her, put his hands folded under his chin like he was sleeping pointed to her again and then to her mouth. “I was…yelling in my sleep?” Rowan asked. Kannon nodded.
Rowan thought back on the dream. “What did I say?” She whispered. Kannon opened his mouth then closed it. He shrugged. Rowan rolled her eyes. “Useless.” She muttered under her breath.
Kannon backed off and walked toward the others. Rowan followed him. Everyone sat in a circle and the lantern shone in the middle of their circle. Liz was curled up against Oliver, her head resting on his shoulder. William leaned heavily against the wall. Rowan crossed over and sat in the corner across from Cedric but distant from everyone else.
Sunny snuck up behind her sitting in the shadows, her blue eyes dancing with a expression that Rowan couldn’t read. “And as soon as I woke, I was attacked by a group of raptors. It’s like they were…waiting for me. I think however we spawned here we were intentionally placed in certain places. So when I spawned I was attacked and I guess they were hoping that I’d be killed.” William was saying in a low voice.
Oliver’s brow furrowed. “And then what happened?” He asked. “Well obviously I ran. I don’t have any weapons. This “implant” is probably useless so yeah…I ran. Till I found this cave and collapsed in a pool of blood. I couldn’t move. The only food or water I had was that rain water falling from the cracks in the ceiling. One drop at a time.”
“And that’s how Liv found you?” Cedric asked. “Yeah after a while.” William said, sipping slowly from a birch wood cup full of water. “She’s pretty resourceful, that one.”
“Did you see anyone else on the island?” William shrugged. “I was in this cave most of the time…waiting to die. Although I did hear voices outside the cave once.” He replied. “Why didn’t you call out for help then?!” Cedric asked, sounding exasperated.
William’s face went dark. “Because…they weren’t trying to save people. They were looking for me. For us. For the Phoenixs. To bring us to “The Master” or someone. I’m almost certain that’s who’s in the dome.” A shiver ran down Rowan’s spine as Sunny’s tail lightly brushed her arm.
Sunny was humming under her breath. The same tune.
“So we need to get to the dome and stop them right?” Cedric asked. “Yeah…sounds like great plan even though there’s what, six of us?” William said slowly. Liv perked up. “Hey! I’m coming too!” She squeaked. Oliver shook his head. “You’re too young Liv. You could get hurt.”
“I’m eight! I’m old enough and if you don’t let me come then-then I’ll come anyway!” Liv exclaimed angrily.
Cedric chuckled and patted Oliver on the shoulder. “You’ve got a feisty little sister. You can come pip squeak, we’ll watch out for you.” He said. “But what about William? Someone has to stay with him.” Oliver said. Rowan frowned and looked at Sunny. Sunny narrowed her amber eyes thoughtfully.
William frowned as well. “What are you talking about? I’m coming. There’s no way I’m letting you kids go without my supervision.” Cedric rolled his eyes. “First off we don’t need your “supervision”, thank you very much. And also you’re injured! You could die! You’re not going.” Cedric said.
William narrowed his eyes at his grandson and sat up straighter, although wincing slightly. “Young man I am coming. I’m going to help y’all with this if it’s the last thing I do.”
“But I don’t want it to be the last thing you do!!! I don’t want you to die!! You’re part of my family for goodness sake!!” Cedric protested.
William opened his mouth to say something but Rowan interrupted them. “Just stop arguing. I already have a headache. If…William wants to risk his life and die to get out of this place then that’s his choice. No one else’s. I don’t care.” Rowan said. Cedric rose to his feet, ignoring Oliver’s pleading “please don’t fight” look.
“It’s not JUST his choice if there are people who care about him! And there ARE people who do. We’re not all heartless like you!” Cedric snapped. Rowan rose to her feet, although she was a head shorter than Cedric she was just as intimidating.
“I’m not heartless! I’m thinking on terms of our survival! If he dies on his own cause then it’s HIS fault. This was his decision. We’re in a life or death situation!! Deal with it.” Rowan hissed.
“But that doesn’t mean that we don’t use good reasoning to keep people from dying for us!!”
“Its his choice! If he dies he dies!”
“No one else has to die if we all work together!”
“Well then obviously you should back down and follow my plan and “work together” on it!!”
“Well if you’re plan includes people dying then I will not!”
“Guys just stop!” Elayne yelled at the top of her lungs. (Which is very loud considering how high Elayne can scream. She got in between them. “Y’all are fighting when we could be working. I just want to get home.” She whispered.
Rowan glared at her. “Yeah because you’re a spoiled little brat who’s been pampered her whole life. You just want to get back to your “special” life. Pathetic!” Rowan spat. A hurt look ran across Elayne’s face. Cedric stepped in front of her. “Hey! Don’t talk to my cousin like that!”
“I can talk to her however I want “Your majesty”.” Rowan hissed, her eyes flashing with rage.
She whirled around and stomped off out the cave entrance. “Rowan come back! It’s not safe at night!” Oliver called. There was no answer. “Kids.” William muttered under his breath.
They all turned and looked at Cedric. “What?!” He asked defensively.
“You’re the one who made her angry. Go deal with it.” Oliver said plainly. Cedric blinked at him. “What? Why?”
“Because the rest of them don’t want to be..squashed. And I’m injured.” William said. Cedric gritted his teeth. “Ugh fine! But if it doesn’t end well don’t blame me! I’m better at starting fights then defusing them!”
With that he marched off after Rowan. “Do you think he can do it?” Liv asked. Kannon snorted. “We’ll just have to see.” Oliver said.

A few days ago I tamed a terror bird, I named him Rodan in honor of a fire bird from the Godzilla films,I wouldn't think I would like Rodan, the terror bird, so much, he was very powerful, or at least I thought, I used him for almost everything, even though there were better dinosaurs at the base, but one day I went too far with Rodan and was surprised by a t-rex, seriously I hadn't even noticed, Rodan took some serious damage, and I decided to go after the rex, I thought Rodan wouldn't resist, but resisted! This is a warrior!
We ran and ran. We were lost. Lost and scared in the woods, practically begging to be snacked on by Terror birds, Allosaurus or Carnotaurus. It didn't help that the sky was getting darker by the minute.
"I told you going into Redwoods was a bad idea!" Josh complained.
"Look man, it was either that or the swamp." I told him.
"We should've just gone back and accepted our time as prisoners, in fact it would've been best if we stayed there in the first place rather than constantly get chased and lost." He complained.
"It doesn't even matter anymore, we go back now and they'll execute us. At least we actually have a chance of survi-"
Josh jumped. "Shush." He looked around the area, with a sweaty look on his face as if he just ran an hour long marathon. I force his hand off my mouth and checked a very suspicious looking bush. I equipped my spear and poked it, then a Terror Bird jumped out the brush.
"OH SH--, KILL IT, QUICK!"
I didn't have time to reply. I was busy fending off the Terror Bird with the spear, but it was too agile and I was too slow. I keep attempting to poke but it jumps back before I can strike. After 5 failed pokes, it finally rushed me down.
Josh stood there in fear before snapping back to reality and grabbing his spear, but another Terror Bird had jumped him and tore his gloves and shirt, both made from the hacked skin of dinosaurs we killed the other day.
I used my spear to block the Terror Bird that had rushed me, but it snapped it in two with ease. It tore my shirt and cut through my skin like a knife and butter. The blood spilled, and the Terror Bird tried to scratch my face, but I managed to dodge it just in time. While it was repositioning itself, I took advantage of the broken spear and shoved one piece into its chest. It screeched in pain and backed up as its own blood soaked its feathers. Soon enough, it falls down and panics as it gives me a quick glance. I could see the regret and humiliation in its eyes. It tried to get up and escape as fast as it could, but I wouldn't allow it. I struck the next piece into its brain, putting it out of its misery, and instantly stopping the pained squawks. I pull both parts of the spear out and throw them at the Terror Bird which was trying to get to Josh as he blocked with his spear. It was dead the next second.
Me and Josh took a breath and tried to get ourselves together, but not soon did another come. Luckily, it was chasing a poor deer and had zero interest in us. It didn't even looked at us, it was too focused.
Despite that, Josh still threw his spear and hit the bird's body. It pierced through its back and made the bird instantly fall back.
"Why did you do that?" I questioned.
"That nasty beaked-jerk would've still came after us." He replied as he pulled out his spear. "It's getting really dark and I'm getting hungry, so let's take care o' these bodies and set up camp."
We harvested the meat and hacked their skin to repair our clothes. We grabbed the materials we needed and began searching.
The first place we found was a remote area filled to the brim with herbivores, but the problems was that some of them, such as the Trikes, could have been territorial and stomped the camp, so we went to the next spot.
Another choice was a cramped cave with an entrance so small, not even a Terror Bird could fit. Unfortunately, the cave turned out to have poisonous gas because when we went in the entrance, the air immediately began to sink away. It had horrible smell, and caused us both immense coughing and so we had to abandon it immediately.
Now it was so dark that torches didn't do much in terms of light. They had very little sight of what's even in front of them, and worse part is that they heard a Rex roar nearby.
They couldn't see, and searching would have become increasingly difficult and dangerous, with no idea where they're going, they could end up in the swamp or in a river with piranha and a Spino. So they had to set camp under a peaceful little tree. They began to make their sleeping bags and put wood on the fire to cook the meat, only problem is that it wouldn't light up.
It frustrated me more and more, and I couldn't think of what I was doing wrong. I was scraping two rocks against each other the hardest I could, it would spark but no fire would come up.
"Come on, stupid rocks! Get the fire going so we can eat!" Apparently, fire was a deterrent against wild animals and most dinosaurs, so it was CRUCIAL to get the fire going.
Josh snatched the rocks out my hands.
"You doofus, you're scraping the wrong way. The sparking faces towards your shirt, it's a good thing there was no fire."
He managed to start the fire I was struggling to light up with ease, and then we put the meat on the campfire, and waited for it to cook.
We picked up camp in the morning and went to go search to find a safer, warmer place to set up. We took the cooked meat and some wood with us, but not the campfire.
And the search began.

And so, Sunny, Gary, and Paige were treading through the murky swamp, trying to find the leeches to make the cure for Skyler’s sickness. It was damp, hot, and overall unbearable considering they also had to wear the repugnant bug repellant that Rick made.
“When are we gonna find these damn leeches?” Paige asked, looking around. There were a lot of creatures running around and tussling about. Baryonyx, Sarcosuchus, and the strange Paraceratherium. But there seemed to be no leeches, even though this was where they typically come from.
“Maybe they’re leaving us alone because we have the bug repellent on,” Sunny suggested, “Not like I’m complaining though. I’d rather not get leeched.”
Gary seemed awfully quiet this time around, even in the presence of her sister. Something happened on his expedition with Skyler and Rick that made him this way. Sunny looked over at him and nudged him with her elbow.
“Hey! Brighten up!” Sunny told him, “Why the long face?”
Gary’s eyes darted up to a dry piece of land.
“Skyler got sick because of me. It’s my fault we’re here.”
“Wha-? What are you talkin’ about?” Paige said with a raised eyebrow, “You tried your hardest on that expedition. There was no changing Skyler getting sick.”
Rick put his hands in his pockets and looked down at the algae-filled waters.
“Hey. At least she’s only sick, okay?” Paige remarked, “At least she isn’t… dead.”
Paige’s expression fell at that. Sunny looked at both of them in worry. It seemed as if landing on this island only made their troubles worse and worse. Heartache was inevitable, but to this extent?
“Is this how… they felt?” Sunny thought as her mind wandered to those characters of her world. Voices and screams ran through her head as they trudged toward the dry land. It was almost as if she was there herself. The explosions, the cries, and the bloodshed filled her senses.
And then she began to weep.
“Why are we here?” Sunny sobbed. Tears welled up in her eyes as her mind ran wild, “Who put us here? Why would they put us here? How did they put us here-”
Paige grabbed Sunny, and gently wrapped her arms around her body. Sunny let out a sniffle, as she buried her face into Paige’s shoulder. Paige closed her eyes gently as she embraced her friend.
“I know you’re worried about us. We’ll be alright, Sunny. We’ll all make it out together. All of us.”
“T-thank you,” Sunny muttered. She pulled away from the hugs and looked into Paige’s eyes with a smile. Paige grinned back.
“Hey, anything to make a friend better. I always hug my friends if they’re feeling down in the dumps.”
Sunny looked into Paige’s eyes. For a moment, Sunny could see paint blobs in her reflection. They were blue and covering her eyes and face. But as Paige’s implant dimmed down, the blobs disappeared.
“Thanks, again,” Sunny said. Paige nodded.
“Of course, Sunny.”
“Hey. You two, look what I found!”
The two looked at the dry piece of land to see Gary holding a thick, big leech in his hand. But he didn’t seem to be calling them over because of the leech. Sunny and Paige walked over to Gary, and then Gary began to continue walking, until eventually they reached a large cliff that they couldn’t reach. They could see the remnants of a campfire atop. It would definitely be a beautiful spot to look at the stars.
“Look here,” Gary said. He pointed at a small crevice in the cliff. It was a cave. Both of their eyes widened at the sight.
“A cave? This is where that artifact was found, right?” Paige asked.
Gary nodded. He held the leech up.
“We got the leech already. So why don’t we go in and collect the artifact?”
“Hmm,” Sunny muttered, “It could be dangerous in there. We didn’t bring any tames to mask our scent from the creatures. What if there’s something in there we can’t kill?”
Paige slammed her club into the palm of her hand.
“I wouldn’t worry about it. We’re all strong enough to take anything down. Well, probably not a Tyrannosaurus, but those definitely don’t live in caves. Even if things get bad… We can always run and tell the others about it. But if we get the artifact now it’ll be a win-win for us, right?”
“I guess so,” Sunny whispered. The three looked into the cave. They didn’t hear anything except the buzzing of electricity.
“Let’s go in,” Gary said.
The three stepped into the cave, and they were shrouded in darkness again. All of them looked on in awe. It was less of a cave and more of a huge metal platform that rose out of a lake of underground water. Giant metal “fingers” curved out of the platform and toward the roof. And resting in the middle of the platform was an artifact.
“Is that it? Didn’t think it’d be that easy,” Sunny said.
They walked toward the artifact, but as they did, a forcefield of hexagons manifested around it. Goosebumps began to ruffle on Gary’s skin.
“Oh great. Here we go again.”
Gary began to look around, as if something was going to come out for them, but nothing did. Paige’s eyes darted along the floor, and they pinned on a strange lever mechanism. Paige reached her hand out to grab it, but as she touched it, a zap of electricity pierced her heart.
BUZZ!
Paige let out a shriek as she placed her hand over her chest.
Sunny reached out to touch it too, and she experienced the same feeling.
BUZZ!
“Hmm,” Sunny said, scratching her head. She looked at the artifact, “The lever probably makes the forcefield disappear. But it’s charged with electricity, preventing us from doing so-”
Gary suddenly grabbed the lever, and a wave of electricity flowed into his heart. Gary let out a cough of pain, as he placed his other hand on the lever and pulled as hard as he could.
“AHHHHHH!” Gary howled in pain as his heart began to burn away. Blood spilled from his lips, as his consciousness began to fade away. His vision began to blur, and he smiled as he looked at the two again.
“Grab the artifact and leave.”
“But what about you?” Sunny asked. Gary shut his eyes.
“I lived a good life. You two just need to make it out safely and that’s all that matters-”
Sunny rolled her eyes and grabbed the lever. Paige followed suit.
“We’re in this together bro,” Sunny said, “This isn’t some dumb story… You aren’t dying on my watch.”
With both Paige and Sunny pulling the lever at the same time as Gary. Both of them felt sharp electricity puncture their heart, but Gary could feel the burden on his shoulders lessen. With a final pull, they all let out a scream of triumph as the lever stopped zapping them and the forcefield disappeared.
They all cheered and Gary let out a sigh of relief. Sunny patted him on the back and showed him the artifact.
“Why don’t you have it? You basically did the heavy lifting.”
Gary smiled, reached out, and touched the artifact. The artifact disintegrated and entered his implant. Gary’s implant began to glow, and suddenly two clones of himself appeared beside him. The others looked on in awe as the clones looked around, dumbfounded.
“Wow! There’s three of you now! I can’t believe I had two long lost brothers…” Sunny joked with a laugh. Paige looked one of the clones in the eyes, scratching her head and squinting.
“I don’t think they have emotions or know how to think.”
“Yeah, me neither, they’d be chattering nonstop if they did,” Gary realized, “Well I’m tired of this. Let’s just go back to camp, we got what we need and the artifact.”
So with that, they left the cave and headed back home with their finds.
~
“Alright drink up!” Sunny told Skyler as she held a glass vial to her lips. Skyler groaned and opened her mouth weakly. Sunny began to pour it down Skyler’s throat like it was water. Skyler began to choke, and Sunny withdrew the vial.
“Oh, my bad.”
With only a drop left to spare, Skyler swallowed it down, and sat up, rubbing her head.
“Thanks a lot dude,” Skyler commented, rolling her eyes. The redness in her face was already beginning to fade. She already seemed to be getting better. She held her wrist out, and her implant began to glow. The artifact of the hunter manifested in her hand.
“So I heard you managed to collect two more artifacts,” Skyler said.
“Yeah. You were right all along,” Paige apologized by bowing her head, “I’m sorry for not believing you.”
Skyler looked at her with a smirk.
“Oh don’t worry. It’s not personal. But now that we have three…”
She looked off into the distance of the green Obelisk, which seemed to be pulsating more intensely than usual.
“We have a trip to make. And all of us are going. Including our tames. Because something tells me isn’t gonna be that easy.”
“But what about the recruits? What about Ben and Chris?” Sunny asked, “Why don’t we just raid June’s castle with these artifacts and save them?”
“We can’t afford to wait for them. I have a good feeling about this obelisk now. And I think all of you do too.”
Gary spoke, “Skyler is right. I have a good feeling Ben has it handled. He has always been smart with his ideas. If we get to the obelisk and it really is the key to survival-”
“Key to escape,” Rick corrected him. Gary looked at him weirdly. Rick looked up.
“We’re gonna need to come in hot. Literally. So we need to start preparing before we go. We’re gonna need to brew some cold drinks, collect a lot of cool water, and start collecting armor around from the beacons so we can prepare for what that obelisk will throw at us,” Rick explained.
“And what’s so dangerous about this obelisk that we need to prepare so hard?” Simon asked.
“You don’t wanna know.”
Bobby began to get nervous at the thought.
“Well if that’s the case… We should get moving.”
And so they did.
These things are so scary one time I was taming something and one just comes out of nowhere and tries to kill me I'm able to kill that one but over here is his friend just comes along and kills me so if you're new I would definitely say if you see one of these run especially if you just started
Nox’s miniature adventure- By Swamp Guy
(This story takes place when Nox is just a little kid kapro. Roughtooth is still alive at this time.)
Nox and Roughtooth happily pranced through the swamp, chasing a dodo. “He’s mine now!” Roughtooth yelped.
“Not yet!” Nox pounced, but overshot and ended up close to the redwoods. An achatina peered at him. “Aaah!” He yelled, and Roughtooth came up behind him.
“Nothing to worry about, he’s just a little snail.”
“You’re just a little lunch.” Said a gruff voice. They looked up to see....a terror Bird!
The chase was long and difficult. Nox stumbled often. The terror bird tripped on a root and was eaten by a sarco.
“Aaahhh...” Roughtooth sighed. “Sometimes it’s good to live in the swamp.
