Sincerely, Shrikesong

(6/6) FINALE

Shrikesong opened her eyes. She was in front of her den. Everything felt ... strange. The pain was gone, and it felt as if her paws weren't even touching the ground.

She peeked into the den. Robin and Scavenger were asleep, soundly. She turned back and a line of six wolves were standing in front of the den, facing outward in a defense position. They were all pitch black, with stars in their fur. Their eyes were pure white and glowed like the sun. "What is this?" Shrikesong called out. "Who are you?"

She had hardly finished speaking when the mountain lion came bounding over the hills, pure acid in its eyes.

"No..." Shrikesong murmured as the beast pounded towards the den.

Suddenly, the six astral wolves grew, hunching down over the mountain lion. Their features grew sharp and their white eyes turned red. They snarled in unison, forming a line of bared teeth. The mountain lion couldn't stop itself quickly enough and it turned, tripping over its feet as it scrambled back the way it had come.

As the mountian lion disappeared, the spirit wolves returned to their original form, their eyes lightening to white again. "Thank you," Shrikesong whispered as they turned to face her. Their coats became shades of red and grey and brown, though they still shined with stars. For a moment, she didn't understand until she recognized Finch and Wren.

These were her children, protecting their sister from the Forever Grounds. Each of them formed a loose line in the order they had died, touching noses with her before disappearing into the tree line, which now shined with stars as well. At the end of the line was Canary.

Canary said nothing to Shrikesong, and didn't touch noses with her, a silent assurance that she held no resentment to her mother, nor any love. She too turned and raced into the tree line, in a different direction than the rest of her siblings. Shrikesong looked back at the den. She wasn't worried about Robin. The little coywolf would survive, she was sure of it.

"I heard you, all along," came a familiar voice from behind her. Littlehare stood before her, along with Duskwind and their parents, all smiling at her. "We all did."
