Megas, Chapter 3

After his stunning victory at the Granicus Alexander had drawn the personal attention of the Persian King Darius III, Darius was at the head of an army, he brought his wife and children, sure of his victory against Alexander. Now, Alexander went south, into the Levant but Darius got him on the North, so he had caught Alexander in the rear. The Greek cavalry however very quickly routed the Persian army. And Darius had been so sure of his victory he brought his family, so now his wife and children had been taken by the Macedonian Army.

Darius sent a letter asking for an alliance between the two and for his family back, Alexander replied, with his letter ending as such “In the future, whenever you communicate with me, send to me as the King of Asia — do not write to me as an equal.”

Darius tried again, 10000 Drachmae for his family, everything west of the Euphrates in the Persian Empire, which was Egypt, Israel, Syria, Lebanon and much of Turkey, Alexander's general Parmenion said "If I were Alexander, I would take that offer" Alexander said that if he were Parmenion, he would too.
