The Blood War
Chapter Twenty-Eight
Again and again.
Every step she took forward, it seemed something was always dragging Outlander back. Left and right, pieces of her life were being stolen from her; first her mother's fateful encounter with a mountain lion, then Scavenger, then the coyote pack ran her out, and now her wolf pack.
Again and again, bits of her happiness, ripped away by cold claws of dread.
Again and again.
Snowblind's claws sank into her neck, sending Outlander's nerves in a panicked state, colliding with one another in excruciating explosions. She bit her tongue, willing her quivering body to hold still and prevent the alpha's claws from reaching too far under her skin to be fatal. Her face was pressed in the ground, but she could make out Bone ahead of her. His face had the same look as earlier. Fear. But it was different. This time he was afraid FOR her.
Outlander had found herself wavering between completely trusting the Bone Beast and continuing to hold on to her hatred, but here, like she had been so often recently, she was struck by her utter helplessness without him, and it made her furious.
Snowblind was speaking, saying something smug, pridefully. Outlander wasn't listening. There was too much commotion in her own head to hear clearly. The situation WAS clear, however. Snowblind had chosen his moment wisely. Bone wouldn't be able to save her, not in time. Snowblind would slash through her neck, no matter the circumstance.
Through her own deliberation, that one fact silenced all of the noise and made one unanimous decision. When Snowblind did strike, she would still have time to make him pay for it.
If she had to die, by every ounce of rage in her body, she would take him with her.
And she would do it on HER terms.
While Snowblind continued his gloating over Bone, Outlander took in a deep, slow breath, steeling herself for the pain to come. Without warning, she kicked off of the ground, twisting under Snowblind's paws until she was belly-up. His claws ripped through her neck as she rotated and tears stung at her eyes as blood rushed down her coat, but the move had left Snowblind shocked and unbalanced, giving Outlander a chance to land a kick in his belly that shoved him off of her.
The alpha staggered back, shock slowing his thinking. Outlander didn't have time to waste; while taking command and inflicting the wound on herself rather than allowing Snowblind to put full power behind the strike had lessened the damage, the wound was still large enough to send a flood of blood down the sides of her neck and forlegs.
Her rate of bloodloss was the clock, and she didn't have a lot of time.
Without giving him time to recover, she lunged at Snowblind, going for his neck. Her small size didn't give the bite the immense power she had intended for it to have, but it also made it a bit harder for the white wolf to shake her off. She sank her fangs in as tightly as she could, refusing to budge as he kicked her in the sides and clawed at her face.
Too long the coywolf had been abused and trodden on. Too long she had suffered at the hands of the cruel and wicked. Not it was her turn to shed blood, to take command. She could feel her strength begin to ebb away and the world began to sway around her as the lack of blood started to have serious consequences.
Her eyes shifted to two blurry, frozen shapes in the background. Winks, watching from a fairly safe distance away, and Bone, still frozen in front of the alpha den. So far, he seemed to have been too shocked or confused to move.
"Now," she thought, growing weary as Snowblind's fighting became more frantic, "Now is the time to be a monster."
Snowblind gave one violent kick and the immistakeable crack of ribs breaking filled her ears, sending a new wave of unspeakable pain through Outlander's side. She screamed, releasing her grip on his neck before crumpling to the ground. Through the hazy blurs around her, she could see the alpha loom over her, a look of cold fury on his face as he determined a fittingly painful punishment for her. Outlander smiled weakly. Maybe he wouldn't die, but the river of blood staining his body a grim shade of pink showed that she gave him a fight, and a scar, he would never forget.
Her eyelids slid closer together against her will but before they shut, she caught the flicker of a monsterish shadow cast over the wounded alpha, and the immistakable fleck of pale blue that held the flame of the fearsome death-wolf.
She chuckled, feeling light, like she was slowly being lifted up above the clouds. "There's my monster," she murmured wearily, shutting her eyes.

The Blood War
Chapter Six
Another waking nightmare, a wolf's skeleton, partially cloaked with dark, rotted skin.
He sat completely and utterly still, staring forward directly at Ashsky. A young, silver wolf stood before the beast, frozen by fear. Outlander looked around at the faces of her packmates to answer the question that had been coiling at the bottom of her stomach. The fear, the disbelief, the disgust ... that said it all.
This was no nightmare. This one was real.
Ashsky trembled a bit, clearing her throat before she barked, "Back away, Stormwind." Her quavering voice filled the still clearing. Outlander expected the beast to protest, the launch itslef forward, teeth bared, but it only stood, a silent, stone guardian keeping watch until the time to act.
"I can't..." murmered a small voice.
"Storm."
"I can't move. I can't," the poor young she-wolf whimpered. Her entire body trembled and she spoke in a whisper laced with terror.
"Please, Stormwind. Try. Please, just back away from it."
The word "it" sparked a flame within the skeletal statue. It tilted its head up slightly and as the sun shone on them, those eyes, once dead grey with boredom or exauhstion or both, suddenly shimmered a feirce blue. In one instantaneous motion, it shot the front half of its body forward, snatching Stormwind's neck in its bone jaw. Ashsky and the rest of the pack dropped into battle-stance immediately, ears pinned, tails lashing, and slobbering teeth bared, but none dared close in on the beast.
The silver wolf yelped, trying to break free of the beasts hold, to no avail. Every kick, every bite, every attempt Stormwind made had no effect, other than ruffling the beasts fur a bit. It's eyes shadowed, the blue flame that lit them dying out. It fell still into its statue-like state again. In a low voice that chilled the very air around them, emanating from some place dark and deep within, it growled, "Get rid of me..." The words didn't come out of his mouth. They didn't have to. Nothing about this creature made sense.
There was silence, then the voice boomed again, stronger ... angrier, "Get rid of me?"
"Stop this," Ashsky barked. "Let her go!"
The beast rose to its feet slowly, Stormwind still in its grip. It was a giant compared to the wolves.
Outlander had heard the stories coyote pups had scared each other with, about the death-wolf, the monster made of bones and skin that killed you if you were first to see it that day. Now realization hit her hard. Coyotes didn't bother with ghost-stories; monsters were real, and she was staring right at one.
The blue flame shone again, and the death-wolf lunged.

The Blood War
Chapter one
Sunlight laced itself through the wisps of white cloud in the sky, the broad blue expanse high above the treetops looming wide and welcoming. A cloud of dust whirled upward from Bone’s feet as he walked, sockets grinding together as he pressed weight onto his unprotected bones that he walked upon.
“Hungry again,” he rumbled to himself in a deep voice, no more worn than it had been six years ago. Or fifty. Or four hundred. “Nothing I can do about it. Unrepentant rats…” he spoke the last part in a menacing tone, swinging his head around to stare piercingly back the way he had come. Behind him, over the broad stretch of dusty, rocky desert which reminded him of his time with Journey, lay a low inward dip, trees and earth cascading into itself to form a protected valley, where a wolf pack had settled. Apparently ungrateful to have a connection with their ancestors, they had forced him to leave their territory.
He paused his walk as he reached the shade of a twisted, scraggly tree, inhaling sharply, causing air to whip into the hollow cavern of his skull and tasting the scents that danced upon his tongue. “Time to find a new forest,” he said in fake elatedness, jaw clicking and sending a tremor through his rib cage. “Or maybe…” As he turned to look back the way he came, he let out a gentle huff. “Flesh of my flesh, ripped from my bones,” he breathed to himself. An image of the small coyote he had found a long while ago wavered into his mind. “That was a… nice place. And not… too far from here.”
Bone spun in a slow circle, thinking. “There was a wolf pack nearby. Hm, hm, yes, a wolf pack nearby. And that coyote pack…” The involuntary motion of drawing his tongue across his upper lip escaped him at the thought. “Flesh and torn body. Hmm.”
With a swish of his battered tail, he turned and set off at a quick lope in the direction of the forest his mind had dare remind him of. In the direction of wolves who appreciated him; or, at least, pretended to. In the direction of a coyote pack he had stalked nearly two years prior.
In the direction of blood and flesh.
