The Blood War

Chapter seven

Blood, blood, blood, the thrill of blood on his tongue filling his senses, sending him into a state of starvation. The young wolf, silver-furred and apparently called “Stormwind”, squirmed in his jaws, but he didn’t bat an eye at her fighting. His teeth curved deeper into her flesh, and he could taste it; sweet and tangy and the source of his only reason for life.

A snap rang out as he closed his jaws firmer around her neck, the splintering crack of death ringing in his ears as she slumped dead in his mouth.

Every wolf around him was silent as her body dropped like a dead weight to the forest floor at his feet. His eyes, iced and alight with hunger for blood and murder, searched their faces, before landing on small black male, his ears back, his tail between his legs, with paws trembling.

“Raven-!” the beta, Ashsky, began to scream a warning, but he lunged and pinned the young wolf to the ground before he could retaliate. Blood sprayed over his forelegs and chest, painting his exposed bones a brilliant scarlet as he stole another life from the world.

“Stop,” a voice said behind him. He slowly turned, jaw clicking loosely into itself, and found his venomous stare locked on a small wolf with overly large ears and red-brown fur. She was shorter than all the others, but was not a true wolf; a coywolf, if he had to guess. “You don’t have to kill anyone,” she whispered, her voice wavering slightly on the wind as she tried to stay brave. Realization dawned on him; she knew him. How did she know him?

“I do!” he screamed, baring his blood-stained teeth. “I do have to kill them! I have to kill everyone! No one deserves life!”

He lunged over the corpse of the black wolf, leaping at her in fury.
