On extintion there will be purple spikes on wasteland finish waves kiling corrupted creatures then you can harvest element from the spikes

You can harvest somme in the space biome in GENESIS PART 2 when the supply crate are PURPLE.

You'll mostly get Element Shard but plus or less rarely ( depending on the drop rate you're on ), you'll get Element.

The best harvester are Tek Stryder ( Drill Module ) or Tek Fist.

Pickaxe is Fine.

Note that the Mining Drill isn't very good as it will mostly mine Element Shard than Element, and because

1 Element = 100 Element Shard,

Thus if you're looking for Element, you shouldn't use Mining Drill.
