Ovis are a good way to get pelt also.

You can also get pelt from the megaloceros and the castoroides and some more. But that's a very small amount of pelt so the dire bear is better. And if you have a sword it will be very easy to kill it. So just go to red woods and kill all the dire bears you can find. But keep distance to the rexes if you're a low level.
