Rate Tips
For the first taming stage, it is based on drag weight. A baby Rex is good for getting 100% trust. Keep more than one dead baby Rex on hand. If it’s trapped, sometimes it will bug out and it won’t get the friend bar after eating it. Either try again if you have enough baby Rexes to spare, or leave render, come back, and try again.
The second taming stage is based off max health of the Dino you kill. It doesn’t matter how much health that Dino has lost, just what the max health is. Baby brontos work very well for this because they have a high max health at high levels, have low health when hatched, and don’t fight back.
The first thing is to find your carchar. I play on 5x taming at level 9 (max Dino level being 270), that roughly equates to 3x taming at level 5. Do be aware that anything less than 5x taming speed will kick you off when you reach a certain percent of taming. At 1x it’s 20%, 2x 40%, 3x 60%, and 4x 80%. This scales with taming level, not difficulty level. If you’re playing on anything less than 5x, have someone else there with you because you will need to bring it back to the trap and re-trap it before being kicked off at whatever percent and whatever taming. To put it like this: if you are on 1x settings, bring it back to the trap before reaching 20% and continue to chomp on things while in the trap until you are kicked off. You’ll need to feed it another Rex to make it friendly again. If you get kicked off due to running out of time, you will lose a large chunk of taming effectiveness. If you get kicked off because of blood rage or percentage, you will lose very little taming effectiveness. If you fat finger and dismount you’ll lose a good chunk of taming effectiveness.
Once you have your carchar and you know your settings, breed together Rexes for babies, and ideally some at or near max level brontos. Next, using either a dimetredon, otter, ac units, or the egg incubator, incubate the eggs until they have about a minute left on the timer. Pick them up/remove them. If you don’t remove it from the egg incubator in time just pick up the structure and they will drop in a bag. Put all your Rex eggs and bronto eggs on a flying Dino with a high weight stat (argys and dreadmares are good for this, if you want you can put it on a different Dino and black hole that Dino if you have a dreadmare and don’t want to worry about weight)
At your trapped carchar, build some two by two foundation squares with decent spacing. Place railing on three sides. I usually build anywhere from 5-10 of these, depending on the level of the carchar. Using an ac unit (you’ll need a generator with gasoline to run it), otter, or dimetredon, throw out 5-6 bronto eggs into each pen and hatch them all the way. Do this before you do your Rex eggs. When all your baby brontos are out, hatch your Rexes and claim the one you are going to shoot. It stops the rest of the babies from fleeing. Bring your bay over to the carchar and feed it. Pick up one of the gate traps and immediately hop on, don’t let it attack any of the babies yet. If it does, it will raise the blood rage but not the taming meter. You’ll have to wait for it to go back down. Go to the first pen and eat the baby brontos there. Keep an eye on your rage and taming meter, and how much the babies in that pen raised it. That will give you a rough estimate on how many you can eat before you have to wait for it to go down again, like if six babies brought your taming to 15% and your rage to 26, you can chomp on 12 more babies before having to wait to chomp again and bring your taming to 30% (if you’re on 1x rates you need to go back to the trap). If you’re on anything below 5x, bring the carchar back to the trap and have someone bring things to you to chomp on. Ideally you want to be kicked off due to percent or blood rage. Wear good armor for the tame so that if it decides to nibble at you, you don’t get one tapped.
