Book 1: Convergence

Prologue

The sun shown brightly through the trees into the forest. A small monkey dug through the leaves and dirt on the ground, looking for its next meal. As it picked up a small bug, the ground began to shake. The monkey ran away as three sets of footsteps came pounding through the forest. A few seconds later, a raptor came racing through the trees. The three boys ran ahead of the raptor. They were breathing hard from sprinting through the trees. They were supposed to be on a simple foraging trip, but one of them, Grant, had decided to pick on a raptor that was sitting by itself without a pack. Grant had always been more of a bully, and loved to torture the more helpless animals of the island. The other two were Spark and Cole. Cole was the oldest of the three. Spark was the youngest, but he had the most experience out in the wild. As they continued forward, they sprinted past a familiar tree. The three of them instinctively turned towards the shoreline where they would be visible from their village. Shortly after the turn, Spark heard a loud thud behind him, followed by a shout, but he did not have time to turn around. When they cleared the tree-line, Grant was missing. Cole and Spark looked at each other, both knowing what had happened. They trudged along the shore towards the village. Everyone in the village recognized that someone was gone. A serious and solemn atmosphere filled the village. As Spark sat in his hut, he began to feel guilty for the loss of his friend. If he had just turned around to help him up, perhaps he would not have become a meal. After several minutes, he collected himself and stood up. He was sad at the loss of his friend, but it was time to continue forward. People were claimed by the wild all the time. He need not worry about it, but rather press on and see what life had in store for him.
