Prologue
In the basement of an apartment in Seattle, Washington, six men sat around a table. It was dark in the room, the fireplace providing warmth from the cold and dreary night. The men were a peculiar bunch. One sat with a virtual reality headset sitting on his head. He sat there impatiently as he watched the man next to him messing around on a computer, working on his fourth attempt at creating his so called ‘unreal’ program. Next to him was a man who seemed nearly ghost-like, as if he was not entirely there, just an abstract idea of a man. In the next seat was a man who looked like he came from an older town, the ones that were filled with neon signs and lights. He had been helping the man with his program all day. Next to him was a man whose T-shirt read, “Instinct Over Impulse.” He was a man of few words, but stuck by his friends at all times. The final seat was filled by a man wearing a suit coat, as well as a beat up top hat. In his hand he fingered a playing card with a Joker on it.
“Finished!” The man at the computer exclaimed. The men all gathered excitedly to see the program. They gathered around closely as it opened. When it did, it began a story…
“Boom!” A bomb exploded. Nothing remained except for one small particle. Element. That was what the humans had called it. It was what they would call a miracle substance. The Earth was beginning to fade: the natural resources had been exhausted, pollution filled the air, the wildlife had been nearly eradicated, and humans were getting sick and dying. But this ‘Element’ could be the resource they needed to save Earth. Scientists from across the world began to experiment. Earth began to recover. All seemed well, until war broke out. The fighting raged for years. Soldiers fought in high tech armor made of Element, using weapons of the same type. However, the pollution from the elemental weapons began to take a toll on Earth. Soon, everyone had to leave, as Earth slowly became corrupted by the unrefined Element that seemed to almost be a being itself. They launched two programs to ensure survival: the first launched space stations containing life into orbit around the Earth, while the other prepared to launch a spaceship to find a new home planet. They began to simulate people onto these ‘Arks’ as they called them. These people were those who had died in the past, given a second chance to live thanks to the experienced scientists of the time. However, with the corruption spreading, the citizens of Earth had to board the ship, as they did not have time for the Arks to run their course. However, the ship never launched. Earth was taken over by monstrous creatures before everyone could leave. But a last chance, a small glimmer, a faint hope was found in the Arks. Over time, several survivors began to show prominence: Helena, Mei Yin, Rockwell. However, Rockwell fell to the corruption of element. He become one with the system…
The six friends stood together watching. Suddenly, the computer came to life. It began to glow. “He’s escaped the system!” The man who sat at the computer exclaimed. His eyes widened. This was impossible. How could Rockwell actually live in the program and escape. He didn’t know but he had no time to figure it out. He quickly began to shut down all of his systems, but his file was corrupted. However, rather then let the monster he created loose, he reluctantly sent the file into the depths of the internet. He managed to lock the file from the outside, but the program continued to run on its own, although it was unable to affect anything. The friends sat down in relief, glad that their friend was able to save them. However, the man couldn’t help but wonder what would happen within his program as it plummeted into the vast reaches of time and space, never to be seen…
