Chapter fourteen: A death threat.
Eventually Jack was allowed to wander the castle. Cyra was always with him, watching. He’d gotten a lot better but grew tired easily. Jack was very silent and didn’t speak often but his stuttered wasn’t as bad. He was embarrassed by it though. Cyra always made sure that he and Cyrus would never left alone in the same room together. Cyrus seemed to dislike Jack. Usually jack and Cyra were in the library. The room echoed in silence as they read. Well, mostly Cyra read.
Cyra looked up from a book one afternoon. Jack was sitting in a chair, “reading” a book with a confused expression on his face. The book’s name was “dodo tales” and Jack was holding it upside down which explained the puzzled look on his face. “Jack. Are you okay?” Cyra asked. Jack looked up. “Y-yeah. I’m-Im-I’m -Im just trying to f-figure out how to r-read this. It-it-it-it-it-it’s written in some w-weird language.” Jack said. Cyra’s laugh echoed through the silent room. “Jack. The reason you can’t read it is because you’re holding it upside down.” She said. Jack blushed and flipped the book over. “That-that explains a lot.” Jack muttered. He looked away but Cyra saw his mouth twitching. “Ah ha! So you do have a sense of humor! You’re laughing at yourself! And here I thought I was dealing with some kind of humorless man.” Cyra exclaimed. For the first time that Cyra had seen, Jack grinned. Mostly rather sheepishly but it was still a grin. “Good. Now we just have to unlock his other emotions and memories he’s hidden.” Cyra though to herself. Then his grin faded and he looked away. Cyra reached out and touched him. Jack froze. Her heart filled with sympathy for him. She felt oddly drawn to him, and she could feel his hurt and that hurt her to.
Jack was startled whenever Cyra touched him. Her hand was smooth and gentle. Jack wanted to pull away but felt the odd urge to not pull away. “Jack. You don’t have to hide your feelings. I don’t know what you’re going through but it’s okay. I’m here.” She whispered. Jack lifted his face and gazed into her eyes. Jade. Like water. She reached out slowly and put her hand on his cheek. Jack’s heart bumped against his chest, he felt like he couldn’t breath. Just then the door opened and Cyra jerked her hand away. Cyrus strutted in. His face was pale and a scar ran down the side of his face by his ear that hadn’t been there before. Cyra leapt to her feet. “Cyrus! What are you up to? Are you ok?” She asked worriedly. Cyrus nodded and eyed jack out of the corner of his eye. “I’m fine. Nora told me to get y’all for dinner.” Cyrus said. “Ok. Well you boys so ahead. I’ll put away the books.” Cyra volunteered. Jack follows Cyrus quietly down the hall. Jack wanted to get to the dining room fast before Cyrus said or did something to him. But Cyrus had other plans. Once they had gotten out of view from the library Cyrus whirled around and pressed his hands into Jack’s chest, pushing him against the wall. Cyrus held him there. “Listen up mister! I don’t know what you’re trying to pull but you’re not fooling me. You may have fooled my sister and Nora and William but not me! Whatever you do, stay away from my sister! Do you understand?! Don’t even touch her!” Cyrus exclaimed, his eyes filled with rage. Jack squirmed underneath Cyrus’ grip. “Let-let me-me-me g-go.” Jack stuttered. “Let-me-me g-go.” Cyrus mocked. “Who are you fooling? You’re not welcome here! If you so much as touch my sister I will kill you! Do you understand?!” Cyrus asked, his grip around Jack’s neck tightening. Jack nodded, struggling to breath. Cyrus smirked. “Good.”
“Cyrus! Jack! Wait up! I’m done!” Cyra called. “Okay!” Cyrus called. “Don’t talk to her about it.” Cyrus whispered. He gave Jack one last threatening glance and then let go of him.
