Chapter nine
“Alright, drag me the next one!” Carter yelled as he drove another one of the sharp logs he had been making into the ground. I gave the log one last throw, and it landed so hard it made the chips of wood on the ground fly about seven inches into the air. He had started making the Den and the area around into some kind of base. It had been two weeks since Carter had arrived.
“Hey, Ripper, could you run this up to the smithy,” he asked, handing me a crooked, chipped sword.
“Sure,” I responded, taking the handle of the sword in my mouth.
“Oh, could you also get the one I just made for me? It’s also on the smithy.”
“You got it,” I said, my voice slightly muffled by the sword in my mouth.
“Thanks,” he called up to me as I ran.
When I got into the den, I saw that Berry had fallen asleep. Probably out of boredom, since Leo was out hunting and Carter and I had been working on spike walls around the outside of the den. I gently placed the broken sword on the smithy as to not disturb Berry. Than, I picked the new sword up and ran it down to Carter.
“Thanks,” he said as I dropped the sword into his hands.
“That the last one?” I said, gesturing at the spiked post he was sharpening.
“Yep,” he chirped back.
“Well, I’m going on a walk,” I announced, trotting down the slanted entrance to the den.
“Alright, just don’t go out of earshot,” he called. I turned around and nodded clearly. He nodded back as I turned around and resumed walking. About five minutes into my walk when I had started heading back, I realized I had become quite parched. The den was within eyesight, and Carter had seen me and waved, so I walked over to the river. The fresh taste of water felt extremely refreshing on my bone-dry throat. I passed Carter on my way up to the den, and he told me that Leo had returned from hunting, and I could hear him having a conversation with Berry in the den. When the inside of the den came into my view, I could see what Leo’s hunting haul was. It consisted of two Paras and a adolescent Karkinos.
“Nice kills,” I said as I walked into the den.
“Oh, hey Ripper,” Leo said.
I sat down and gorged myself on the untouched Karkinos.
“I NEW you would like it,” Leo said said confidently.
I smiled and relaxed as I realized how much better this new life was from the previous one. I gobbled down the last of the Karkinos leg and joined in the conversation.
