Chapter 3: Crimes Committed
“See what I mean Tyrone? All they want to do is have you worship and- what?” I was smirking as she ranted on about how the only thing males wanted was your respect and undying love.
“Nothing! You always go on about this kind of stuff, and you always say how guys are so bad in front of me- a guy. And for some reason, you don’t mind me! Out of everyone, I’m literally the only guy you don’t hate.” I stated, waiting for her to come up with a reply. “Yeah, well… you don’t try and pull any ‘pretty me’ stunts, or anything like- LOOK OUT!” Her friendly complaints about it all turned into a cry of warning as an arrow struck my side. I felt a little dizzy and I grew wearier. Another pierced my side. I grew dizzier but not entirely disoriented. I saw my attackers. I raced to go after them, my teeth bared. I heard Serena cry out the pack call and I heard others respond to it. Within moments they were following me into the charge. Another two arrows impaled my chest and I grew disoriented, my eyes were blurred and I turned around in fear to fall back behind Serena. I barely felt the last arrow settle itself into my side as I fell down, my eyes closing and my nightmares beginning.
I saw Tyrone rush head first into the attackers. I cried out my cry to rally the others and I charged behind Tyrone, and as I raced forward. The others rushed in behind me, an army of angry Deinonychus appeared from behind the rocks. We were up against an armada of Stegosaurus, Triceratops and other armoured herbivores that appeared to be under the command of humans- the only thing we really knew about humans was that they used their high intelligence to befriend and command others, as well as constructing multiple different items to aid them and their allies. We took them on, latching to their tames and clawing at them but they were too strong. They pushed us back past Tyrone who had fallen unconscious and once they did, they held their ground and took him. By the time we got back they had gone, and they took him with them. I was devastated. He was my best friend. And now he was gone.
Some people tried to soothe me, but I couldn’t think. The sun set and before I knew it the dark, consuming blanket of night had embraced my surroundings, coating it and shielding it from the light of day. I went to the spot where he slept last, where the grass was pressed down by the riverbank. I didn’t think I’d ever see him again, and that is true to this day. All of that was 3 years ago.
“So what happened to him?” Enquired one of the babies.
“I don’t know,” I replied. “I never saw him again.”
“But if you didn’t find his body, he isn’t dead!” Stated another one, but I told him:
“Just because I didn’t find his body doesn’t mean there isn’t a body. I don’t think he’ll ever be back. I don’t think..” but as I trailed off another one of the juvenile Deinonychus cut me off, saying:
“But he has to come back! It’s not fair.”
“Life isn’t fair! I guess this is just the first you’ve seen of it.” I walked off back to the other members of the pack. Some followed me and some sat down, thinking about the story. I looked over the sunset again and sighed. I missed him, but I can’t dwell on the past.
