Chapter 2: Flesh Fresh From The Hunt

I joined in, leaping onto the same Allo as Serena. We tore through its flesh, ripping chunks of meat out and watching as the blood poured out of its gashing wound. The Allos fought back but it was futile: we had them dead before they realised what hit them. We took our share of meat from the carcasses whilst some of the others brought it back to members of the pack, either to feed their mates or to impress others. Alan, one of the hunters, took a ration of meat back to his mate, Melody. The reason he hung around there with the simp gang was because that is where his wife usually is. Most of the other males took meat back, some of the females that joined us on the hunt gathered around the same area and began to eat their share. I tore a mighty hunk of meat off and sat down a while away from the others. Serena took her share of the meat and sat down with it near me. I didn’t mind her company, and besides, it was better being near her than some of the others. I watched as she sat down and tore a piece of meat out of her pile and ate it. I tucked in myself.

After our meal I was about to head off and find a nice source of water, but one of the hunters who had gathered a large chunk of meat decided that he would bring it to Serena. I smiled and decided to watch the drama unfold. He put it down beside her and she looked at the pile he had brought her. She rolled her eyes and looked away. He took a piece and pushed it towards her head. She scoffed and said to him,

“Honey, if you want to impress me you’re gonna have to do a little better than that.” She stood up and swayed her hips as she walked past him. He puffed up his chest and walked beside her, trying to put his head over hers. She put her index claw on his throat and her face close to his and said,

“I appreciate how you want this… but if I were you…” she dug the claw deeper into his throat and slowly scraped it along his neck until there was a cut at least 2 inches in length. “I’d try something or someone else to get my affection.” She walked off and brushed her tail against his shoulder down his neck, aggravating the wound she had caused which made him wince and pushing his chin away from her. I smirked as she walked past me and I followed her.

It would have been a nice day if I hadn’t followed her. That was my fatal mistake. I’ll never forget that sunrise. It was beautiful, but it was the last one I’d ever see like that.
