Of Kin
Act I: Scarlet
Chapter 4 (Lore of the Flocks)
"There are three prime flocks," Riot started. "Scarlet's Kin of the redwoods, Griffin's Kin of Far's Peak, and Blizzard's Kin of the snowy mountains. The flocks were all started by the three original commanders: Scarlet, Blizzard, and Oiseau (also known as Griffin.)
"They had their own strengths and weaknesses, but Scarlet's Kin was the largest flock. One of her grandsons, Morder, believed that Scarlet's Kin should span all of the island. He thought they should start a war for all territories. Scarlet disagreed and wanted to keep the peace, so she publicly denounced Morder.
"Furious, he left and took his followers with him to the volcano. They stayed there, fighting to adapt to the intense heat, but eventually they did and even managed to raise their young there. They became known as the Infernal Kin, the only flock not afraid to handle fire and use it as a weapon. They're the ones who attacked our nests. Their numbers are too strong for us to handle alone. We'd have to gain the support of the other flocks to even have a chance."
"So," Corvi interjected, "why don't you join with the other flocks?"
The blue argent scoffed again, "You think we're stupid? It's not that easy."
Corvi was begining to grow a strong disliking for the blue argent. She ignored him and turned to Riot. "What's the issue?"
"Griffin's Kin is a small, but mighty force, but their mountain is protected by the griffins they've made peace with. Infernal Kin could easily defeat the few argents, but attacking a griffin is a death wish. We've tried to ally with them before. The griffins chased us out before we got the chance."
"And Blizzard's Kin?"
"Well, Blizzard's Kin has the numbers to help us, but they're in a war of their own now. The flock has been split between the two brothers struggling for control. They wouldn't pause their war to help us, but they'd band together long enough to keep the Infernals out of the tundra."
Corvi sighed. "We ought to try. We definitely won't survive by doing nothing, they'll just come pick us off."
"We?" Riot tilted his head.
Corvi shrugged. "I might as well help. I've got no home to go to."
Riot thought quietly for a moment. "You're right he said." The blue argent started to protest, but Riot hushed him. "That's enough, Sundown."
Sundown fumed and flew off. Riot turned to Corvi. "We leave for the tundra in the morning."
[TRIVIA: Oiseau is French for "bird" (I got lazy). Morder is Norwegian for "killer," fitting for the ancestor of violent conquerors, me thinks.]
