Chapter five: Breakfast
Cedric awoke the next morning. A warm breeze floated in through the open window. The sun was rising high in the sky. Cedric leapt from bed. Kannon’s bed was empty but Oliver was still there sleeping, his mouth parted slightly, drool dripping down his face. Cedric scrunched his nose and began digging through his suitcase for clothes. He pulled out a black T-shirt and jeans and pulled them on swiftly. He slipped out the dormitory and down toward the dining room. A few people were already up eating breakfast.
Rowan was sitting at a table, her hair still up in a hair bun. She had a book in front of her and seemed to be taking notes. Kannon was also sitting a a table nearby. Cedric sat down beside him. Kannon glanced at him, spooning oatmeal in his mouth. A choked sound slipped out of his mouth. Leeli and Keeley came in from their dorm. “Hi cousins!” Cedric called, unable to keep his grin off his face. Keeley and Leeli glanced at each other, rolling their eyes in unison. “What do you want?” Keeley asked. “Hmm?” Leeli asked. “Geez, I was just saying hi and inviting you to sit at this table with us.” Cedric said.
“Yeah right.” Leeli said. “We don’t trust you.” Keeley said. Cedric scoffed. “Y’all don’t trust me?” Cedric asked innocently. “What would I do?” Oliver suddenly walked in. “Hi bestie.” He said to Cedric and sat down beside him. A squeaking noise sounded from under Oliver. Leeli and Keeley exchanged knowing looks. Oliver pulled out a whoopy cushion and grimaced. “I deserved that.” Oliver said. Cedric snorted and buried his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking with laughter. Leeli and Keeley walked off to sit at another table. “Oh! I forgot to ask…what kingdoms are y’all from?” Cedric asked, motioning to Kannon and Oliver. “Kannon is from the Shadow Phoenix kingdom and I, as you know live in the Rain forest Phoenix kingdom.” Oliver said. Cedric nodded. “My…great aunt is the queen of the shadow phoenixes.” Cedric said. “I know. I read all the history of the phoenixes. Did you know that once they were all one kingd-” Cedric clasped his hand over Oliver’s mouth, silencing him. “I. Don’t. Care.” Kannon snorted. The fire princess, Elayne walked up. “Hello boys.” She said haughtily. Oliver blushed when he caught sight of her. “Hi Elayne.” Cedric said. Oliver raised a eyebrow. “You know HER?” Oliver asked. Cedric inhaled and nodded slowly.
“Yeah we’re…related somehow. In fact I’m related to most the royal phoenixes except the lightning phoenixes. Their line was cut off in the war and the General became king.” Cedric said, gulping a cup of orange juice down and then belched loudly. Elayne wrinkled her nose at him and then bounded off toward Rowan.
“Why do you ask? Do you like her?” Cedric asked Oliver slyly. Oliver blushed. “No! And besides….no one pays attention to me. It’s like I’m not here.” Oliver said. Cedric scoffed.
“Yeah right.” A girl passed. “Hi Cedric and Kannon.” She said, twirling her hair. “Oliver’s here too.” Cedric said. The girl squinted at Oliver. “Who?” And then she walked off. Cedric chuckled. “Dude, it’s like your invisible. You need to make a name for yourself.” Cedric said. Oliver pushed up his glasses nervously. “Uh no. I prefer being left alone.” He said shyly. Cedric rolled his eyes. “Being alone is terrible! I would never hide from anyb- ugh, there’s William! Hide me!” Cedric cried, trying to duck behind skinny Oliver. He wasn’t fast enough. “Hello Cedric.” William said. Cedric sighed and forked at the suspiciously slimy, raw looking, scrambled green eggs on his plate.
“What do you want William?” Cedric asked. “I need you to stop pulling pranks. That prank this morning was unbearable.” William said, sitting down in a chair across of them. A long squeak echoed from under him. William pulled out another whoopy cushion grimly. Oliver and Kannon hid their faces. Cedric fought to keep his face serious. “Cedric!” William growled. Cedric gave him his best innocent look.
Rowan sat at the table, reading rapidly and taking notes. Elayne suddenly walked up. She was wearing a frilled white blouse and dark blue jeans, had bright red lipstick smothered on her lips and her honey blonde ringlets hung down to her shoulders. Her chin was lifted. “What do you want Elayne?” Rowan asked coldly. Elayne sat down beside her. “Agh, no need to be so cold. I just wanted to say hi.” Elayne responded. Rowan gave her a unconvinced look. “Oh and I wanted to comment on your HORRIBLE fashion choices-“
Elayne was interrupted by a bell ringing. Rowan leapt to her feet, gathering up her stuff. “There’s the first class bell!! Gotta go!” She said and raced off. Elayne watched her go, gaping dramatically. “ROWAN!!! Wait up! I haven’t told you what to do to improve your looks!!”
And so all the teens headed toward their classes….
