Chapter twenty one: Cole the mole.

“What happened?” Tom asked, deadly. Josephina shifted her weight nervously. She took a deep breath and squeezed Jaquin’s hand. “Well, we’d been heading to see you father and..we got lost. We didn’t know it was the medallion room, father.” Jaquin said. Tom raised a eyebrow. “Is that so? Then how did you get through the locked door, and what happened to the guards, and where did all the medallions go?!” He asked. Jaquin swallowed.

“Father, we thought it was the throne room, so we asked the guards to let us in there-and…they wouldn’t let us in. So Jaquin uses his power to form portals under them to send them somewhere else. There was no medallions when we went in there. We didn’t know that wasn’t the throne room. We didn’t know father. I’m s-so sorry.” Josephina said sweetly, adding a tremble to her voice. Tom’s eyes softened and he nodded slowly. “I see. Well, next time you need me just ask directions from a guard. Now, what did you need from me?” Tom asked gently. Jaquin scratched his head. “I don’t remember.” He said. Josephina nodded slowly. “Me either. Sometimes it’s hard to remember things.” She said softly. Tom sighed. “OK. Y’all may go.” He said. Josephina and Jaquin left quickly. “I can’t believe that worked!” Jaquin whispered excitedly, once they were out of the throne room. Josephina grinned. “I don’t think he suspected a thing.” Brutus and Peggie grinned. “We never doubted you.” Brutus said. Peggie nodded vigorously. “Not even once!” She squeaked.

As soon as Josephina and Jaquin walked out the spy walked in. Tom glared at him. “What is the news?” He asked. The spy lowered his hood to reveal….Cole. Cole gave Tom a short bow. “Sir. The dark phoenixes are organizing plans to be ready when you strike them last. They’re allying with the other kingdoms and preparing for war.” Cole said. Tom stroked his chin. “Hmm…is that so?” He pondered aloud. Cole waited in tense silence. A grin broke out on Tom’s face. “Well then, I’ll geuss we’ll just have to surprise the Dark phoenixes, the most powerful(besides us) by attacking them next! We will send all our troops. Stay at their castle and learn more information. And DON’T get caught. If you do…it won’t end well for you.” Tom said. Cole bowed low and slowly walked out.

Later he lay in bed, Ralph by his side, old memories coursing through his brain…
