The Blood War
Chapter fifteen
Bone padded on silent paws behind Snowbank, Snowblind, and Outlander. The cloak of night that obscured him from view, the chorus of frogs and crickets gathered amongst in the surrounding trees hiding the sound of their footfalls. They were mostly silent, with occasional quiet conversation passing between them. Outlander was silent the most, he noted, as she walked with her head down.
“Don’t doubt me, brother,” Snowbank snapped, glaring coldly at his twin. “I saw the Beast. I know it’s here, and when we kill it, we’ll be heroes. Perhaps mother will even retire and give the role of alpha to me.” Bone had to squeeze his jaws shut to hide laughter. Kill it? his mind asked mockingly. Oh, good luck with that.
“Mother may be old, but she isn’t stupid enough to give you the alpha role. You would send the pack straight to a bloody death.” Snowblind’s words were sharp, daggers that dug into his brother’s skin. Outlander remained silent, keeping her head and tail low with ears angled back. Everything about her body language said that she didn’t want to be there, and he wondered if she was considering to turn and slip back to their makeshift camp.
Snowbank halted, ears rotating. “I hear something,” he whispered softly. “It’s the Beast, I know it.” Bone paused as well, narrowing his eyes. He wasn’t very far behind them; just out of view, disguised in the overcast shadows of the canopy overhead and shrubbery all around.
Snowblind and Snowbank padded different directions into the forest without a word of a plan. Outlander stayed where she was, and as they disappeared she sighed, sitting down. Bone slithered forward slowly, creeping towards her, before stepping into sight and looking down at her. His shadow, outlined faintly by the overhead moon, loomed above her, and she spun around, eyes widening as she stared into his eyes.
“Hi,” he said into the chilly air, and he saw the tremble of her shoulders. He sat down, lowering his head until he was level with her’s. “I’m not going to kill you. But unless you want me to, you must be quiet.”
