Best way to tame and not get hurt, have a shadowmane female with high stamina, and another person on a male shadowmane, then go into stealth mode on female, for the PC hit x, which will make all your tames in a radius go invisible. Once your invisible you can walk up to, bump into, and feed it without it going aggro or attacking you, not to mention any predators around won't see you either so you can safely do what you have to.
